EXCLUSIVE: He’s baaack! Arnold Schwarzenegger is attached to star in a rights package that CAA is shopping today that will revive The Terminator, one of Hollywood’s most iconic scifi franchises. The agency is dropping the package on studios this afternoon. I’m told that already, Universal, Sony and Lionsgate, and CBS Films are looking hard at the package. There is no screenwriter attached at this point, and Robert Cort is producing. This is the first real activity on The Terminator project since February 2010, when the property emerged from a bankruptcy auction and into the possession of Pacificor. The Santa Barbara-based hedge fund posted a bid of $29.5 million, with the promise that additional multimillion-dollar payments for each film would go to Halcyon, the company that made the 2009 McG-directed Terminator Salvation. That film starred Sam Worthington as the cyborg and Christian Bale as John Connor, and the storyline launched the battle between Skynet and the human survivors of the apocalypse, the war foreshadowed in James Cameron’s visionary 1984 original film. Halcyon wanted to make several films but ran out of money. At the time of the auction, Pacificor beat out a combined bid by Lionsgate and Sony planning to make back-to-back sequels to bring the franchise to a natural creative conclusion.
While many felt at the time that Pacificor overpaid and that Lionsgate and Sony would have been better matches for the material, CAA has chosen an optimum time to seek a new deal. I wrote back in February that Universal quietly was trying to arrange for Lin to be helmer of the project. At the time, some turned up their noses. Given the strong international grosses being racked up by Fast Five and the expectations for a strong domestic opening this Friday, Lin has a lot of heat. And Schwarzenegger is looking to recapture past marquee glory ending his run as California State Governor. Schwarzenegger has circled several projects including Last Stand for Lionsgate, but here, he’s the star, returning to the signature role that once established him as the world’s biggest movie star.
Much like the Superman property, The Terminator has a ticking clock on the rights. There is a stipulation in copyright law that if you assign your rights, you get them back in 35 years. In this case, Cameron assigned his rights to Hemdale, and the North American rights will revert back to him in 2018. Now, Cameron has more or less washed his hands of the Terminator franchise, but I’m told a new deal would have to be made with him if the plan was to keep making Terminator installments beyond that period. There is plenty of time to make at least two Terminator films before that happens, and that might be sufficient to end the saga that so far has spanned four films. Any financier that makes those films owns them free and clear. Rumor is the project price tag is at least $25 million upfront, against a purchase price near $36 million, not including paydays for Schwarzenegger or Lin. It would stand to reason because of the amount Pacificor paid in 2010 and the interest it has carried since. I’m told there is no set price, but this will likely be a whopping sale by the time the dust has settled and the bidding is complete.

TV show flopped and so did Salvation ….leave it dead
They were still good and there is sooo much potential. Bring on T5!!
hold the phone!!!
The tv series failed for MANY reasons, not one of which was a bad story or cast.
1) Writers strike killed season 1 before it got off the ground
2) FOX – again – moved the show a second time to the dreaded Friday night slot.
Why would Skynet make a machine that has the body of a 64-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger?
That is offensive to me
FADE IN:
INT. SENIOR HOME – DAY
JOHN CONNOR, 73, is being fed applesauce by a HOT NURSE, 20.
Suddenly, Connor notices a new member of this elderly community; one who’s managed to blend in with no problem…
Betty White could play the HOT NURSE.
Brilliant. lol
“You’re terminated, fu…oh, my dentures fell out.”
Bah… The Terminator I & II were Harlan Ellison rip-offs anyway. Schwarzenegger had better roles in The Running Man and Total Recall. Maybe this sequel will showcase his cybernetic baboon heart.
Terminator. Aliens. Jaws.
All franchises that should have ended after two movies.
Don’t forget The Godfather.
Uh, Jaws should have ended with the first movie.
Jingle All the Way 2
A harried father decides to dream the impossible dream, to get an official Zhu-Zhu toy for his son just before Christmas Day.
All for this quote:
“It’s not a Zhu-Zhu!”
Come on!!!
The really good news for this Terminator is that titanium hip replacement surgery has come such a long way in the past 10 years he will only have about 4 to 6 weeks of rehab after John Connor blasts them off. But he should check with his HMO about which surgeons are “in network”.
James Cameron’s visionary film? You mean the story idea that he stole from Harlan Ellison?
Oh shit, here we go. Give it a rest already.
WINNING!
This is sad. Salvation was weak plus Arnie’s been there and done that. Move on dude.
After putting up with this dumb ass as governor of California, the last thing I’d do is pay to see him in a movie.
You don’t get it. Ahhhnold became governor of Caleefornya because John Connor knew that Caleefornya under Grey Davis was spending state money and giving tax advantages to develop Skynet.
The guvunator bankrupted Caleefornya to prevent Skynet from going live.
We all should be thankful to Ahhhnold for bankrupting Caleefornya and saving the world.
I know I’m flogging a dead horse, but why can’t they bring back The Sarah Connor Chronicles? I didn’t discover this series until it was on DVD, and by the time I watched the last episode of season 2 I discovered that the show had been canceled! This show had so much going for it. I just can’t understand why they dropped it. And why another network didn’t pick it up.
For all you haters who think Arnold is NOT in shape to do this..c’mon guys..go google what 4 iu’s of GH per day + 400 mg of testosterone enanthante per week + 600 mg of deca durabolin can do to a guy in 6 weeks..I think its great idea….and think its cool Justin Lin who started with a 250K flick is now doing this….Best wishes to all..
Well, yeah! Pump ‘em full of drugs. Worked for Elvis. What a town.
Forget Arnold, tell me how I can get in that regimen!
Arnold is so old, The new film will be called “TERMINATOR -RISE OF THE HEARING AIDS”
I love geriatric cyborgs!!!!
I loved the original Terminator movie.
But this is just sad to the point of being embarrassing.
Arnold is an old man.
Whatever… Alien 3 was vastly superior to Aliens, which was just another hopped up 80s action flick. 3 brought back tge suspense and claustrophobia.
Yeah… Anyone should be able to plagiarize someone else’s work and pass it off as thier own. What a tool.
Oh well, why not? Justin Lin directed my favorite Community episode, “Modern Warfare,” so I have some optimism that the new T will have decent action with a little bit of timely humor.
I can’t wait for the next Terminator!!!! I want it asap and I hope more follow this 5th one please!!!! This is the news I’ve been waiting for!!!
I have to say, even though Arnold is old, he is the “Original Terminator”. And you know he will be working out for the part. He’s not going to do a movie looking out of shape. So let it be. I will definitely see his movie with my kids… You can’t replace the original Terminator…. Go Arnold….
I am so freakin excited about this news!!! I really wanted a T5!!! This made my day!
Ahnold knows acting!
Let Ahnold be Ahnold!!
I’d like to see him in a movie about kicking the sh!t out of the thieves of Wall Street (like Goldman Sucks)and Washington, D.C. (like the private baking consortium, Federal Reserve), in any manner he would like (financial and physical included)!!!
All this crap about not touching it because of Cameron’s lack of involvement — who cares. Lin is one of the few capable, young action filmmakers out there — he’s not a hack like Len Wiseman, the guy knows how to craft set pieces without relying on loads of CGI. So I am welcoming the news that he’s going to be involved.
In reality, T2 is completely overrated. I find it to be one of Cameron’s flabbiest films, with some FX that were groundbreaking at the time, but go back and watch it now and it’s tedious. Loads of stretches where Linda Hamilton’s grating heroine gives us platitudes on nuclear war and “no fate but what we make.” The outcome is preordained, the set pieces are well executed but I find 3 as entertaining — it’s leaner, faster paced, more of a B-movie but a lot more fun to watch if you actually try and sit through them again. 4 wasn’t as awful as I expected, but I think Lin can better McG’s efforts. I’m certainly hoping he can.
