EXCLUSIVE: He’s baaack! Arnold Schwarzenegger is attached to star in a rights package that CAA is shopping today that will revive The Terminator, one of Hollywood’s most iconic scifi franchises. The agency is dropping the package on studios this afternoon. I’m told that already, Universal, Sony and Lionsgate, and CBS Films are looking hard at the package. There is no screenwriter attached at this point, and Robert Cort is producing. This is the first real activity on The Terminator project since February 2010, when the property emerged from a bankruptcy auction and into the possession of Pacificor. The Santa Barbara-based hedge fund posted a bid of $29.5 million, with the promise that additional multimillion-dollar payments for each film would go to Halcyon, the company that made the 2009 McG-directed Terminator Salvation. That film starred Sam Worthington as the cyborg and Christian Bale as John Connor, and the storyline launched the battle between Skynet and the human survivors of the apocalypse, the war foreshadowed in James Cameron’s visionary 1984 original film. Halcyon wanted to make several films but ran out of money. At the time of the auction, Pacificor beat out a combined bid by Lionsgate and Sony planning to make back-to-back sequels to bring the franchise to a natural creative conclusion.
While many felt at the time that Pacificor overpaid and that Lionsgate and Sony would have been better matches for the material, CAA has chosen an optimum time to seek a new deal. I wrote back in February that Universal quietly was trying to arrange for Lin to be helmer of the project. At the time, some turned up their noses. Given the strong international grosses being racked up by Fast Five and the expectations for a strong domestic opening this Friday, Lin has a lot of heat. And Schwarzenegger is looking to recapture past marquee glory ending his run as California State Governor. Schwarzenegger has circled several projects including Last Stand for Lionsgate, but here, he’s the star, returning to the signature role that once established him as the world’s biggest movie star.
Much like the Superman property, The Terminator has a ticking clock on the rights. There is a stipulation in copyright law that if you assign your rights, you get them back in 35 years. In this case, Cameron assigned his rights to Hemdale, and the North American rights will revert back to him in 2018. Now, Cameron has more or less washed his hands of the Terminator franchise, but I’m told a new deal would have to be made with him if the plan was to keep making Terminator installments beyond that period. There is plenty of time to make at least two Terminator films before that happens, and that might be sufficient to end the saga that so far has spanned four films. Any financier that makes those films owns them free and clear. Rumor is the project price tag is at least $25 million upfront, against a purchase price near $36 million, not including paydays for Schwarzenegger or Lin. It would stand to reason because of the amount Pacificor paid in 2010 and the interest it has carried since. I’m told there is no set price, but this will likely be a whopping sale by the time the dust has settled and the bidding is complete.

I would kind of like to see him play a human scientist who builds the original terminator robot. Then use the special effects from Tron Legacy to put his 80s face and muscles back on him. That could be really interesting.
Both of those things already happened in Terminator 3 and 4 respectively.
If they hadn’t put the silly gag about the Terminator being based on scientist Arnold (with a southern accent I believe), they could have thrown him into part 5 as a human who worked on inventing the robots and knows the layout of the inside of Skynet or something.
They run into him out in the desert and he’s gone kind of mad. At first they think he’s a robot, but then they discover he’s actually human. He joins John Conner on some type of mission that may or may not include time travel.
You’d also have a scene where old Arnold fights young Arnold, which could be cool.
I mean, was saw Arnold as a villain. We saw Arnold as a hero. We saw Arnold old. We saw Arnold artificially young. Why not go ahead and make him a human character? It would be a new angle and it would make sense of his age. Otherwise, I don’t see how this would work.
i have no time to read all these non-sensical comments. My prediction for the script is that Arnold is the real mold for the T-series and we see him develop the background company until he transforms into mr. bionic. Just steer clear of Freezedom. If you get that reference talk to the nikki people about my contact info.
can i get rights on a comment?
I said I’ll be back and I am…with huge saggy old man boobies…now my new name is Hasbeenimator…
I hope they call it The Pardonator” ….
Wow a Terminator that uses the clapper and wears depends
Arnold would be great a a geriatric terminator. I can hear him now….I’ll be back…..Oh my back, my back!
Haha, I just realised after posting that on opposite sides of the world, we thought of the same back joke. Great minds think alike (or is it “fools never differ”?)
There’s no reason to assume that because Arnold will be in this film, that he will be playing a Terminator.
They may simply use his digitized face and a CGI body for some shots, a body-double in others, when they’re representing a Terminator. The model he played was, after all, only one of many “models” available. There’s no reason to presume that every unit off the production line looks just like him.
In the Terminator novels (based upon T2), they had an interesting approach to this. They used that approach in “The Sarah Connor Chronicles” as well, so this is “canon” in the Terminator world now.
The idea was, Skynet used scan data and personality profiles taken from real people, and replicated them. The reason that the “Arnold” Terminator had an Austrian accent was because the template they’d used was an Austrian doctor who was captured.
Wouldn’t it be interesting if Arnold plays THAT character… an older man, a leader in a resistance movement, who escaped from captivity after being used as one of the templates for T101 and T-800 models? We could see a CGI “Arnold Terminator” voiced by him (it’s OK if it’s not entirely “human” after all, isn’t it?) while seeing the real Arnold playing a human.
Think of what they did in Tron Legacy. That’s largely how I see this working.
This is the exactly the idea I was thinking of. It’s really the only role that makes sense for his, at this point. +1
I really don’t care much for this. Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is the only thing “Terminator” that matters.
I wish Warner Bros. would make this bid for “Terminator 5″ , and also bring back Josh Friedman and continue The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Warner Bros. would have two timelines of the franchise to reap rewards on.
If Warner Bros. fights for this bid and wins I would be extremely excited.
Arnie’s got to get back on the “roids” fast.
Doesn’t anybody actually RETIRE from film making these days? Schwartenegger has been Governor of the most populous state in the Union for two terms! Now that is truly an achievement,no matter what you think of his political record. However he now wants to go back to acting/filmmaking after all that has passed? Good grief, why? Movie fans cannot live without more Terminator movies? This return to film is not necessary and finally it is not dignified given his political history.
Guess a lot of you didn’t watch Sarah Connor Chronicles, they were a great addition to the franchise. If anything they should produce a movie out of that realm, instead of a new T5 movie.
I’d pay dearly to see that. I’d pay dearly to see Arnold in T5 too. He’s been busy being governor. With free time to get back in shape and knowing how to do so he could surprise a lot of people. We could just send over Bob and Jillian from ‘The Biggest Loser’. There’s so much crap coming out of studios these days that I’d probably enjoy even a badly executed T5 far better than most. The rest is all upside.
I agree, T:SCC was pretty good and felt more like a worthy continuation of the franchise. Still, it’s a shame the movies weren’t neatly concluded with T2; instead they just continued to rumble on in self-parody and pretentiousness (T3/4 anybody?). Another predictable Arnold-Based movie just makes me so depressed with this franchise. I’m at the point of saying “just let it die in peace for goodness sake”.
And to all those ‘fans’ who seem to be willing to watch anything the studios feed you, as long as it stars Arnold in the titular role; please stop ruining the Terminator for the rest of us by supporting this blatant milking of the franchise.
Oh well, at least it isn’t an animated movie along the lines of The Clone Wars.
Would gladly see this Meathead’s movies if he gave the money he makes to California to make up for the mountains of money he threw down the drain while Governor.
This is terrible news. There is no need for Arnie to re-prove his action status. His only purpose would be to be an inspiration for model design, and nothing else.
This series lost heart after T2 (excluding the final scene of T3).
We need a story, cast and crew that can reinject some love into these movies.
“T5: Short-Term-inator”
Seriously, what is the point of this? Obviously, the project still might turn out to be cool in some way, but a part of me was really hoping that if Arnold returned to Hollywood after his political term was over, he would take on some fresh, different roles, sort of find a renewed sense of purpose, if you will. Reading something like this seems to indicate that the guy is theoretically already too lazy to move beyond the persona that once defined him and eventually helped run his career into the ground.
Anyone that thinks this film will have any redeemable qualities deserves to have developed a lower than average IQ. I love Arnold, but this two bit director has no business putting his hands on this franchise…by franchise I mean Terminator and T2. T3 can suck a cheetas dick, and McG couldnt direct his way out of a retard competition. You idiots deserve the crap you allow these studios to spoon feed you.
I am a Republican. After witnessing Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger issuing a commutation reduced sentence for Esteban Nunez, I WILL BOYCOTT SCHWARZENEGGER AND WILL NEVER WATCH ANY MOVIE, SHOW, OR EVEN LOOK AT A POSTER OF ARNOLD. Our family has burned all our Schwarzenegger movies in the fireplace and we have all agreed to convince our friends and family never to look at his face again. We are shameful for voting for a Democrat who claimed to be a Republican! NEVER AGAIN! JERRY BROWN IS ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER!
I was hoping they only make another Terminator film if the script was good and that they hopefully conclude the movie series.
When they announced that Helena Bonham Carter was playing the main villain in Terminator: Salvation, I was expecting her to be the Skynet equivalent of the Borg Queen from Star Trek. I was so disappointed in the end when I saw the film and it was a wasted opportunity to have a really iconic and memorable villain in the franchise. They should have had a confrontation between her, Christian Bale and Sam Worthington towards the end like with Picard, Data and the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact’s climax
Arnold Schwarzenegger needs to do more dramas rather than just doing huge action blockbusters because he pigeonholed himself as an actor who just did action movies. He is an underrated actor. So, I hope that he does more dramas, tries to reach his full potential as an actor and tries to win an Oscar.
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Season 3 by Josh Friedman or get the fuck out.
Old Guys Rule ……. Cant wait for the cigar smokin annnold to be baaaaack
Arnold is the Mad Cyborg Scientist that is making all of these creations…I could see that…
GIVE IT UP!! Maybe we can see Jessy the Body as Arnolds progressive side kick and together they can force tax payers to see the move under threat of violence. Even that wouldn’t get me there. HANG IT UP! I’LL BE BACK IS WAY OVER USED!
I have the plot! In the future, man has created a computer virus that makes terminator machines age and then sends the virus back in time, giving californians once again, that hope and change feeling!
Is this the one where The Terminator lands in California and sets about destroying the economy by implementing mindless socialist policies?
His age is insignificant. I guess everyone forgot about how movie magic made Jeff Bridges look young again in Tron 2.
Sure, except everyone was griping about how that CG of the younger Bridges looked unconvincing.
If the producers really have to CG Arnold into oblivion in order to make him look like a believable cyborg, they may as well just hire Zemeckis instead of Lin. Clearly, everyone loved those motion capture experiments. (cue eye roll)
He’s in horrrruble shape, it might even be a tuuuumah! His new catchcry will be “OWWWWW, ME BACK!” – *voice over* From the depths of the Hasta La Villas retirement village, comes the newest super-cyborg, equipped with liquid metal that can shape into walking frames, lovely silver dinner trays and even a Craftmatic adjustable bed for when he gets tired, which is all the time… Arnold Scwarzenneger IS – The Ethyl Merman-Ator. CUM WITH MEE BEEFORE I DIIIIIIIEEEEEE….
It’ll still be awesomesauce!
