Catherine Zeta-Jones has been set to play a new role that has been created especially for the movie version of the Adam Shankman-directed Rock of Ages for New Line. She’ll play the wife of the mayor of Los Angeles, a conservative character out to do away with rock and roll. “There are so many plotlines in the piece, we thought it would be fun to create a villain, and a cultural discussion point,” Shankman told Deadline. “She’s the moral majority person, kind of like if Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child in that era. To have a great actress who won an actress in this genre with Chicago is wonderful.” Prudishness aside, Zeta-Jones gets to take part in the 80s rock anthems. She will sing Pat Benatar’s Hit Me With Your Best Shot and Twisted Sister’s We’re Not Gonna Take It. Shankman will finish casting shortly. He needs the journalist who beds down with Tom Cruise’s decadent rocker Stacee Jaxx (Amy Adams couldn’t do it because of Man of Steel) and now he needs an actor to play the mayor.

They should have cast Julia Roberts. I’ve always wanted to see Tom Cruise do a movie with her. They are both incredible actors and it would be amazing to see them bounce off each other in a film.
Julia Roberts is a mean old lady. Catherine can sing.
Hon, remember where you are…Details please!
Brilliant choice. How good was she in Chicago???!!!
She’s that rarity, a movie star who actually started out in musical theater, so it’s not embarrassing when she’s cast in a musical.

And you wonder why Hollywood is bankrupt!
He needs more than just Adams’ replacement and the mayor. Major roles in the musical as yet unannounced for the film include Regina, the city planner, and Franz and Hertz, the Germans who want to develop the Sunset Strip where the rock club owned by Alan Arkin is located. Of course, in the musical, Hit Me With Your Best Shot is sung by Franz and We’re Not Gonna Take It is sung by Regina, so if the movie is giving those songs to Zeta-Jones, that suggests significant retoling.
I believe Regina, Franz and Hertz were written out of the movie version. Zeta Jones should totally do a film version of A Little Night Music with Angela Lansbury.
Why don’t they just call it “Rock of Geezers”? Have they cast Joan Collins yet? This lineup of oldies is fine if they intend to play to empty theaters.
Shankman is killing this movie. I hope they fire him. They have not even seemed to write it Regina or Franz for the movie. It will be a joke if you ask me.
Good for her !! GOOD CHOICE !!
Best Idea in a Long Time!
I love how it has to be a “conservative” who wants to ban rock and roll in the 80′s when it was the liberal demi-god Al Gore who actually tried to do this. It’s still very amusing to see rock stars fawn all over Gore.
hmmm…the character is conservative out to kill rock and roll…but, then, he says she’d be what we might think of “if Tipper Gore and Anita Bryant had a love child in that era” Other than both wanted to santisize rock music, the analogy makes no sense. It sounds more like Oral Roberts and Anita Bryant’s love child. That would be literally possible, at least.
Hope this helps her feel better. She is a good actress.
What is it with CZJ having/wanting roles written specifically for her in movies? Getting sick of this. Enjoyed her in the past but she’s getting that living-on-another-planet dead eyed look lately.
Oh and another villain who’s a conservative? That’s something we’ve NEVER seen onscreen before. How cutting edge! *rolls eyes*
I have my fingers crossed that this one bombs. They just can’t help themselves with the political bullshit.
Whenever someone in Hollywood needs to come up with a villain, it’s always a conservative Christian. (Yawn). Way to be hip and edgy! Haven’t see that before. Is he turning this into Footloose?
My Grandmother is so excited for this film!
