Neither of these castings in The Dark Knight Rises has been a surprise since February, but it demonstrates Chris Nolan’s preference for working with the same actors. Both Gordon-Levitt and Cotillard starred in Inception, as did Tom Hardy, who was set earlier. Cotillard, who’ll play Wayne Enterprises board member Miranda Tate, was rumored for her role in February, and Deadline was first to reveal that Gordon-Levitt was in talks. He will play John Blake, Gotham beat cop. Here’s the official word from Warner Bros:
BURBANK, CA, April 19, 2011 – Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined the cast of “The Dark Knight Rises,” the epic conclusion to the Dark Knight legend.
Cotillard will appear as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham. Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon. The film reunites the actors with Christopher Nolan, who recently directed them in the award-winning blockbuster “Inception.”
The director stated, “When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience. I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again.”
Heading the cast of “The Dark Knight Rises,” Christian Bale stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The main cast also includes Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle and Tom Hardy as Bane. Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Christopher Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.
“The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Woooo! Christopher Nolan is the undisputed best and greatest director in the world! The Dark Knight Rises will be the biggest movie ever! Watch out Avatar!
Unless one of their stars decides to die a few months before the film comes out, I would doubt that.
Yeah, Tom Hardy, it’s your turn now.
It’s all looking good. Having been truly disappointed with Inception I look forward to this one going above and beyond what I expect to exit the theater with, and let’s just say those expectations are tremendous.
Yea, your not going to be disappointed!
I think the characters listed are bogus in order to prevent spoilers. I am not even sure about Bane, though I think Catwoman is legit.
Surely Miranda Tate is really Talia al Ghul who wants to screw Bruce Wayne (both literally and figuratively)?
she would make a great Talia Al Ghul, she can play dark, melancholy and conflicted very well
but…in the comics, Talia is half-asian (at least the ones i have read), so I would hope that Nolan would stay more faithful to the history. Besides, Talia is also supposed to be a lethal martial arts experts, and I guess they could use a stunt double for that if it turns out to be true, but something tells me that Nolan wouldn’t do that. Based on that, i dont think she will be playing a Talia
Am I the only one bothered by the utterly uninspired title of this film?
Dark Knight Rises?
I know it’s the film that matters, not the title. But still… it just seems kind of lazy to me.
It should be obvious that WB insisted, or at least made a strong request, that the new title have “Dark Knight” in it.
It keeps with the tone of this series. Batman begins, falls and rises pretty much sums up this trilogy. I think the series would have been better just using The Dark Knight for all three films. The first film could have been called either The Dark Knight or The Dark Knight Begins. Second would be The Dark Knight Falls, then The Dark Knight Rises. I think this new movie is going to establish Batman as Gotham’s hero and savior rather than an outcast and will set up the future Batman films. The title is appropriate.
“Dark Knight Rises” is a clever way of saying the Dark Knight ends. When the night rises, it’s over and day begins… The end of Batman (as a character or series) spells out the lifting of darkness from Gotham.
No, I’ve thought for some time that the title was cheesy as hell, and reeks of the studio wanting to keep “The Dark Knight” in the title. Sounds like a bad video-game title to me.
The Dark Knight Rises is a silly, cumbersome and dumb title.
Why not just come out with one headline that announces everybody who was in Inception except DiCaprio will be in Dark Knight Rises, and save all of us some time.
Bring in Ken Watanabe already! oh, well.
Anyway Nolan has cast straight-to-video but actually talented actors like Rutger Haur, Eric Roberts, and Tom Berenger. So who’d be the next this time?
Ken Wantanabe was actually in the first one. He played the “stand-in” Ra’s Al Ghul while Bruce was training early in the film. He’s easy to miss, especially after The Dark Knight and Inception. I forgot he was in there at all until I re-watched Batman Begins the other night.
Ken Wantanabe came and went in the first one remember?
Love Marion Cotillard, very attractive and sexy. French perfection doesn’t get much purer than her.
Unless it’s Eva Green.
I would kill you and many other men to be with Marion Cotillard.
Wohooo!! Let me tell you, this will be an Anne Hathaway you’ve never seen, and she’s going to knock everyone’s socks off in The Dark Knight Rises! You are going to be so killed by her performance. I can’t tell you how good she is going to be as a strong, independent, sexy Catwoman. Oh, she is going to be so good in this. It’s unbelievable the performance she is going to give. It’s amazing. Hahah.. freakin’ fantastic, can’t wait! Man! I feel like a woman!
WTF? Were you there at her audition…..
Stop. Just stop… If you don’t have facts, please don’t gush over a performance that has yet to be.
Thank you for your report, Anne’s Publicist.
Huh? I thought this was already a done deal months ago, maybe i just took your great inside scoop nikki as a done deal…
Batman dies for Gotham but the people know he is a hero, hence the dark knight rises? JGL to become the next batman when Wayne dies? Hmmmmm.
Love Marion but, the part as described above, doesn’t sound particularly interesting. Anne Hathaway definitely seems to have the showier role which is a shame considering Marion is a far better actress than Anne and thus more deserving a more interesting character.
Hathaway is miscast here gentlemen. Cotillard would have made a much better Selina Kyle.
I suspect Hathaway threw a tantrum to get the role.
Apologies. This comment is directed at Lilalulalio-whatever the fuck- at the beginning of this thread.
I promised myself to not get my hopes up too high for TDKR. But I just saw the movie ‘Bronson’ with Tom Hardy playing the title role and holy shit…this guy is a monster of talent. No wonder he was the first to be cast. I sincerely doubt we’re going to be left with impressions about Bale or Anne Hathaway or Marion Cotillard or even Joseph Gordon Leavitt for that matter who is an excellent actor. Hardy is gonna swallow this movie whole. We’re not forgetting Bane once the flood lights come on in theaters.
Hardy’s gonna be the new Heath Ledger and completely overshadow Christian Bale, but let’s hope he doesn’t kill himself.
Please, no, no… Cotillard again… pfff… so boring
Still want Nolan to bring back Anthony Michael Hall (Mike Engel), I think he could be a lot of fun. Very underrated as an actor the last few years.
I don’t understand the Anne Hathaway bashing . She won a well-deserved Oscar nomination for the very dark, ‘ Rachel Getting Married’ , always good on SNL, and she received raves for Shakespeare in the Park’s ‘Twelfth Night’. This lady has the chops, both dramatic and comedic . It was reported she tested with Christian Bale, while Chris Nolan directed the screen test. If Anne was lousy with her screen test , she would not have been approved by Nolan and Bale.
Chris Nolan was “pure genius” when casting one of my fave actors, Christian Bale early on in the trilogy. It took “Batman” from the comics and elevated it to surreal drama. I have enjoyed Bale since seeing “Empire of the Sun” years ago. He enthralled me in “American Psycho”. And has continued with “The Machinist”, “The Fighter”, etc.
He gives such an honest portrayal in his roles that he takes you away from simply watching a “movie star” acting a part. When I watch his movies, I don’t see Christian Bale but the character he has so well “fleshed out” figuratively and literally.
I must say that I am also a fan of the comic book edge some directors have taken. I think it interesting to view both.
And this new casting news makes perfect sense in staying true to Mr. Nolan interpretation. Can’t wait!!
