CMT’s first foray into scripted TV proved short-lived. The music-driven cable network has canceled its first original sitcom, Working Class, after one season. “Unfortunately, CMT will not be pursuing a second season of Working Class,” a note posted today on the show’s Facebook page read. “We’re sad to see it go, but you can still catch Melissa Peterman in new episodes of The Singing Bee.” Working Class stars Peterman as a single mom trying to give her kids a better life by moving them to an upscale suburb. Ed Asner stars as the cranky, surly neighbor and co-worker. Word is the series, created by Jill Cargerman, is now being shopped to other networks, including TV Land. Working Class started off OK, drawing 1.2 million viewers and a .50 rating in adults 18-49 in its January premiere, but slipped subsequently during its run, which concluded with the first-season finale April 1.

Too bad it was really well written show and funny. Just on the wrong network. CBS or ABC should pick it up, it would be a great friday night 8pm show.
I can not believe you are cancelling working class, maybe if you put it in another time slot instead of reruns airing first maybe it would of had a chance, What will be in its place another reality show!!!!!!!!!! You really should be ashamed you dont know what the working class really do want!
“Working Class” canceled.
More working class unemployment.
Lessons learned:
Don’t hire old men to play old men. Old men stink up the screen-lit & fig speaking.
Don’t mention “working class” and the perils of average working stiffs. Depressing and boring, like eavesdropping on convo’s at McDonalds or Wal-Mart. Working class folks have their place-fixing my car, waiting on me, nerd shit, handling my reservations, delivering my stuff, scaring away criminals. Though they come in handy, their lives do NOT make good TV or movies.
Enough with single mom tough times. Don’t get pregnant with bums who leave you!
Bring on : Youth, sex, and zany, funny stuff of well-to-do 20 & 30-something’s having nothing more to do than hang out at coffee shops, etc, talking about dates, sex, cars.
The best show nobody had the opportunity to see. I’m confused as to why such a well constructed show would go on such a crappy network.?! Jill should have known better. Maybe cbs can have it replace 2 1/2 men now that charlie has officially lost his mind.
When will CMT hire people who aren’t ashamed of country music and middle america to produce shows for a network named CMT?
What do you expect when you air on Fridays at 9PM on CMT. Who’s watching CMT on a Friday night?
Was the show even rednecky?
Some networks just shouldn’t go into the scripted arena.
Speaking of Cartoon Network…..
Sure a show that actually made me laugh and was good. Shocker. Well, nice try and hats off to the cast for making me laugh.
That sucks. I really enjoyed this program. I liked it better than other sitcoms on major networks. I hope some other network picks it up.
CMT cancels this great show but leaves garbage like “My Great Big Redneck Wedding” on?
I agree with you 100% who watches My Great Big Redneck Wedding anyway? I really liked this show and I love Melissa Pettermen.
This is the first I’m even hearing of this show. Which is sad. I liked Melissa Peterman on Reba. Peterman and Joanna Garcia were the two best things about that show, I thought.
Summer, that’s sad – you’ve missed the whole season of both their shows! Joanna Garcia starred on ABC’s “Better With You”. I don’t recall how I found it since it never got advertised. It’s in limbo for next season, but it doesn’t look promising. It was a good show, too.
Someone told me about Working Class and after that the only place I saw it advertised was on CMT during the show! (I assume they advertised on CMT other times, but this was all I watched. Seemed like a waste to advertise it then…)
I never even heard of the show. was it ever advertised ? Good cast
It was not rednecky. It was a smart, funny show like Everyone Loves Raymond and Roseanne. The type of show the networks don’t program anymore. Shame, I was hoping that CMT would become a home for these type of shows.
Maybe now some great network that actually wants to be in scripted comedy can snap Brad Johnson up. That guy is wasted over there! NBC – you’re going to be hiring soon, right?
I watched every single episode of this hilarious show! And I’m not “country” – in fact, it was the only thing I watched on CMT. Guess they don’t care about trying to get new viewers.
This article fails to mention that Working Class’s viewership BROKE RECORDS for CMT!!! Funny thing…if a network does absolutely ZERO promotion after a show’s premiere, it’s hard to draw an audience… I didn’t discover Modern Family or Community until the second season, these things take time! Working Class was an incredible new sitcom that deserved a better network and a marketing budget!
I loved this show! I can’t believe that they canceled it. Hopefully we can see it get transferred to another network!
Such a shame. I really enjoyed Working Class. Unfortunately I don’t think enough people knew about the show or realized that it wasn’t a country redneck show. I really hope another network will pick it. Afterall, doesn’t CBS need a replacement for 2 1/2 Men?
All I can say is CMT you SUCK! First Reba get taken off the air and now you are taking Working Class of the air. Come on you air all these dumb reality shows and crap from MTV why dont you get one of them instead of working class. There is actually a family show on TV and it gets cancelled. Well I guess you dont want families to sit down one night a week and watch a fun filled show as a family. You really screwed up this time. I am not going to be watching CMT for a long time now. I hope people start to boycott CMT until you put the show back on the air. You really screwed up this time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Put Working Class back on the air!!!!!!!!!!!
Melissa Peterman is a joy. This show could easily fit in on ABC’s Wednesday comedy block after The Middle or Modern Family.
I can’t believe this news!! This show is the best!!!!! I am now not going to continue to watch CMT. If they wont continue to make Working Class then I am going to watch another station. I can’t believe CMT!!!!! SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whoever makes the decision of what shows to cut and what to leave on CMT and repeat over and over and over….. needs a new perspective!
Cmt was blessed to have working class.
Spineless trolls must think watching a brother and sister get married on a quad is real tv?
Cmt is a junk network, that is why the show failed.
I didn’t even realize the CMT channel was in my cable line-up until about a month or so ago. Found this awesome, funny show and started DVRing it. My daughter and I really like it. I hope another channel picks it up. So nice to have a genuinely funny show that many people can relate to.
Common sense isn’t so common anymore. This was a great show. CMT didn’t know what it had~ Good Luck to all the cast and crew.
