The CW Network just gave early pickup to almost all of its returning series, including reality veteran America’s Next Top Model, which has been renewed for 2 more cycles, including its first ever All-Star edition in the fall. On the scripted side, picked up for next season are the CW’s flagship series The Vampire Diaries, the Monday duo of 90210 and Gossip Girl and sci-fi veteran Supernatural. The only returning series besides departing Smallville not to get an early renewal is veteran One Tree Hill, which is back on the bubble where it was also last year before snagging a last-minute 13-episode order that was later expanded for a full-season 22-episode pickup. Also missing from the list are the CW’s 2 scripted freshmen, Nikita and Hellcats, which are also very much on the bubble. But, judging by the CW’s renewal patterns in the past, there is a very good chance that 2 of the 3 bubble series will eventually make the cut. All five newly renewed series will return in Fall 2011.
According to the CW, the All-Star Edition of Top Model will “feature the models who became breakout characters and who had the most memorable stories from past cycles.” Additional details about the cast, judges and prizes for the All-Star cycle will be announced later. Now in its second season, Vampire Diaries remains the CW’s most-watched show (4.0 million viewers) and top-rated show among the network’s target audience of women 18-34 (2.9/9). Meanwhile, paired with Smallville, Supernatural, now in Season 6, helped boost the CW’s Friday averages by 66% in adults 18-34 and 60% in viewers this season.

Where is “Metropolis”??
Terrorists blew up the city?
I never heard of ANY of these show!
Supernatural is awesome! The rest is a bit “meee”
love SUPERNATURAL!!! bring back the ed colfax from an early episode in season 6…
That says more about you than about the series.
Where is NIKITA?
Noooo. Decent production values, slick action for weekly TV, and a decent looking cast makes for a nice weekly guilty pleasure.
I’m glad SPN got renewed.
yay i’m so happy to hear that the vampire diaries got renewed!! Its my favorite show! Also really happy to hear that Supernatural is returning!
It’s not surprise to see The Vampire Diaries and 90210 renewed. I’ll be VERY surprised to One Tree Hill return…wait, but didn’t I say that a year ago?…shows how much I know because I look at this series as just an dwindling viewership WB antique doing little to build this network anywhere near it needs to be.
I can see Nikita getting cancelled as the show isn’t in CW’s narrow niche market which is a shame because it’s actually an entertaining show. With The Secret Circle most likely getting picked up as it’s a great companion piece to The Vampire Diaries I’m sure the CW is wonder where Nikita fits.
I’d still like to see this network take more chances and things like The Vampire Diaries are where they need to continue and maybe go back to the idea of a Gossip Girl spin-off and tap into the franchised book series “The It Girl”.
Whatever happened with “Raven”? Is that in development for next season?
I think Nikita should be paired with Supernatural, as those are the only two shows on the network that have a real male audience. With Smallville gone, no other show goes with Supernatural.
The Awakening (zombies pilot) is a much better fit for Supernatural on Friday nights.
Not really, as it’s not an action-oriented series, nor do I believe it will have the same audience as Supernatural. They may be in the same genre, but they don’t really go together.Awakening is a female driven drama, that’s aimed at females.I doubt there would be as much spillover audience for it as there would be for Nikita.
i want Hellcats and Nikita back
So glad to have the official word about Supernatural. This is one of the best shows on TV. The Vampire Diaries was a no-brainer. I’m really hoping that Nikita also gets a pick-up. An intelligent show with not one, but two strong, female protagonists and action — just what the CW needs for a little variety and balance.
And if you haven’t heard of any of these shows, you should check out the ones I have mentioned here, especially Supernatural (Fridays at 9pm, lol).
Good news about Supernatural that show is only getting better with age.
If they renew One Tree Hill over Hellcats and/or Nikita I will fricken cut a mother trucker.
LOL! I can’t help but agree there!
One Tree Hill long ago wrapped up all of its storylines and most of its stars are, or soon will be, gone. It shows how weak the CW has become that they would even contemplate bringing the empty shell back.
90210 is at a worrisome point, since the high school characters will graduate to collage, and traditionally, that is where a lot of viewers take the cue to dump a show.
Or college.
COLLEGE not COLLAGE.
I’m shocked The CW itself has been renewed for another season. Their numbers are just embarrassing.
90210 has really improved this season. With the show runner departing, I’m hoping they’re able to “fix” some of the current story lines and characters. It has moved beyond the stereotype of what the show is. I think the shocking pregnancy will really help people get excited for season 3.
I was skeptical about Nikita at first, then was surprised to find it’s an entertaining show … esp when Maggie Q is fighting in lingerie. If Nikita is in fact cancelled maybe Fox can pick it up and pair it with Human Target (assuming HT comes back, that is).
No CW show will EVER be resurrected by another network.
Supernatural is being wasted on Fridays when it can serve as a lead in on another night and get better ratings.
FADE IN:
INT. SENIOR HOME – DAY
JOHN CONNOR, 73, is being fed applesauce by a HOT NURSE, 20.
Suddenly, Connor notices a new member of this elderly community; one who’s managed to blend in with no problem…
CW marketing is terrible. Both Nikita and Hellcats are quality shows. Good writing, acting and production values. But the CW markets everything on their network like it is Melrose Place. Shows with strong previous brand identity (Smallville, Supernatural, even TVD) can somewhat survive this, but it is killing everything else. Fans of every show on that network complain that the promos and previews are nothing like the actual episodes in tone or content. Now the plan is to fix their freshman shows by turning them into soaps! Why not instead trying to market the shows as they are? Focus on the quirky Ally McBeal aspects of Hellcats and the espionage Alias aspects of Nikita. This isn’t reinventing the marketing wheel here. It has been done and can be done. But the CW has one setting only: Melrose Place. This has even damaged their real soaps 90210 and Gossip Girl, since it makes all the shows look alike and deemphasizes anything special about them. Gossip Girl in ratings and hype is a pitiful ghost of its former self.
I have heard most of the shows. In fact I’m a fan of Nikita which is a reinention of the USA Network’s Le Femme Nikita which was a big hit back in the 90s. In fact the Le Femme Nikita’s final episode aired this very month ten years ago.
CW is a small network but has a way to go. In fact Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired on this network when it was WB in fact. But Nikita has become my favorite on Thursday nights 8pm cst/9est. Just check which local listings are your local CW affilates are.
On the espionage level I would love to see more charactor development within Nikita. Or how the infamous Division was created. Nikita honesty has a lot possibilities; I agree that an Alias aspect would work or like the X-Files focus on how one element of the series:like an episode on Amanda and Percy on how they got recruited to Division for example. In the X-Files series for example there was focus on the Cigerette Smoking man; a writer can do the same with support charactors of Nikita. Amanda,in my opioin needs more emotion instead of coming across cold all the time. Percy needs to be fleshed out too.
The CW has a real chance to have a breakout (for their standards) season.
Monday:
One Tree Hill: The Final Season
90210: College
Tuesday:
Vampire Diaries
Secret Circle
Wednesday:
America’s Next Top Model: All Star
Gossip Girl
Thursday:
The Awakening
Cooper and Stone
Friday
Supernatural
Nikita
*Gossip girl and 90210 Need to come back strong. re-tool and promote the shows better
Why would they move VD to Tuesdays and launch Secret Circle out of it when they could just leave it where it is? Why couldn’t your Thursday work on Tuesday? Just doesn’t make sense. And why would they move a “final season” of OTH into a more competitive timeslot? And not use ANTM to launch something new?
Cooper and Stone seems embarrassingly awful. It’s a Mad-TV parody level of cringe. Amazing it went to pilot and if it actually goes to series they might as well burn the whole network down. Embarrassing.
ALL STAR Top Model……oh no!
I love Supernatural. Did you ever see the one where a ghost fucks with the brothers and they argue about why a ghost would do that and what if anything they should do about it?
I loved that one.
90210 could be good. It has surprisingly done well with the coming out gay storyline. Written and acted very well. I hope a new showrunner can improve the overall quality of the show. And YES i agree CW marketing is dreadful. They need to clean house in that department.
Soooo happy to finally find out that 90210 has been renewed for next year…ive been a fan since the first episode and cant wait to see what the CW has planned for next season!..congrats!..
Nikita is the only CW show I watch, so figures it would be on the bubble. Hope it gets picked up for at least one more season for a nice DVD package.
Personally I think one tree hill and Americas next top model need to be canceled. Also I like most of your line up but isn’t the vampire diaries one of their higher rated shows? Too me if you put it on Tuesday there’s too much competition with shows like glee and American idol.
