EXCLUSIVE: After months of negotiations, I hear the four stars of ABC’s Desperate Housewives– Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria — are finalizing deals to return to the dramedy series next fall. The deals are for one year, with an option for a second. With the quartet on board, ABC will renew the show for an eighth season, though it is unclear whether that will happen right away or closer to the May upfronts.
As for Hatcher, Huffman, Cross and Longoria, I hear their new base salary would be around $325,000 per episode, up from about $275,000 under their most recent deals. (Reports have erroneously pegged their previous salaries at $400,000.) With additional compensation, including back-end and bonuses, the actresses’ paychecks are expected to go up as high as $375,000 per episode. If their options for Season 9 are exercised, their base salary is slated to go up to around $350,000, plus other incentives. If Desperate Housewives goes to nine seasons, which has been creator Marc Cherry’s vision for the show, the four leading ladies’ entire compensation package for the next two seasons is valued at close to $18 million for each.
Like in previous salary renegotiations, Hatcher did her deal separately from Huffman, Cross and Longoria, whose reps once again coordinated their talks with Desperate Housewives producer ABC Studios. Additionally, slowing the final stretch of the marathon negotiations was the fact that Cross hired a new attorney about a week ago. But I hear things are now down to the fine print, with the deals expected to close as early as today. And, despite the fact that Hatcher negotiated separately, all four actresses are getting the same deals, just as they did in the last salary renegotiation. (This time the circumstances were a little different as the foursome did not have deals in place beyond Season 7.)
With Hatcher, Huffman, Longoria and Cross on board, as well as the newest housewife, Vanessa Williams, who will also return next season, the only question remaining is the extent of creator/executive producer Cherry’s involvement. He had said he was planning to leave Desperate Housewives after the current seventh season. He continues to be the series’ showrunner, but with his new ABC project Hallelujah picked up to pilot, Desperate Housewives executive producer Bob Daily has taken over day-to-day duties on the show while Cherry is working on his pilot and is expected to continue to do so if Hallelujah goes to series.
Despite slipping in the ratings from its heyday, Desperate Housewives, along with Grey’s Anatomy, continue to be ABC’s strongest hourlong scripted series. Desperate Housewives‘ off-network syndication sale netted a so-so $500,000 per episode from Lifetime, but the show continues to be a hit internationally. With an eighth-season pickup, Desperate Housewives is expected to join eight other ABC series already renewed for next season: Modern Family, The Middle, Cougar Town, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Castle, Dancing With the Stars and The Bachelor.

What’s shocking is how little they make for an hourlong, relative to what Charlie Sheen did for a half-hour.
true but half hours make lots more in syndication… and if sheen left men… hmmm… did that happen? it would kill the show but DH could totally live without one of the housewives.
i hope abc alters it’s scheduling for year 8. the show always starts strong then in winter they are preempted so much ratings drop. this year there have been 5 new eps since mid january incl 2 almost month long stretches of reruns and not on at all. that’s crazy
No, the longest stretch of reruns was 3 weeks (in March). I’m always flabbergasted by such comments concerning ABC’s scheduling practices of “Desperate Housewives”. And how else would you schedule 13 episodes within 22 weeks?
The season contains 23 episodes, the first 10 air at the beginning of the season, prior to Christmas. Then there’s 13 episodes left for January-May. February and May sweeps need to be covered by new episodes. That leaves only 7 episodes for January, March and April.
The only thing ABC could have done differently is to take the show off air between early December and Superbowl. That could have kept the show mostly all-new for the rest of the season. But then people would complain about the 2-month break and blame the inevitable ratings descent in the spring on ABC’s scheduling again.
Either way, when you have 23 episodes within a 35-week season, there are going to be 3 months worth of reruns and preemptions.
You are so right. And you know what? I REALLY miss the character of Edie. She ADDED so much to the show. They EACH add what only each of them can, and when they took her out, it was just too bad. I stopped watching after that. I can’t watch shows that when there is a problem with a writer/actor/etc., they just write them out and we’re just supposed to go along with it because they have the power.
They call it “PROGRAMMING” for a reason.
Good Lord, let it die already!
It’s about time! I’m so excited to see them go into season 8! It’s great news! And Vanessa Williams going into season 8 also is just the icing on top! The ratings prove it’s still a hit!
With this series slowly winding down it’s clear that ABC dropped the ball with the once planned spin-off of a similar show and the other spin-off discussed starring Lily Tomlin and Kathryn Joosten.
If they were smart they’d reboot the show with new Housewives rather than prolong the inevitable as the show declines yet again this season.
The show was a bright red rose is season one. Now its a skunk!
Haters gonna hate… Excited for a season 8 and possibly a 9th. Give the writing team a chance to end this one properly.
I agree.
I’m sure the actresses took one look at the ratings from last original episode and called their agents to lock thing up fast! 9.0MM total and 2.9 (18-49) does not bode well. If it makes it past season 8, I’ll be shocked. I like the idea of trying to rework the show with Vanessa Williams, one or two of the originals (Marcia + Eva) and add a couple of new ones. Would help with budget, story opportunities, etc. This show peaked far too early.
I sure hope there will be more episodes next season, hardly was on, what’s up with that? I am quite unhappy with ABC sounds like there will be more reality/completion crap next season.
“Desperate Housewives’” current ratings are completely in line with trends of previous years. One could have easily predicted last summer (just by looking at the ratings of seasons 3-6) that the show’s ratings this season would be anywhere between low 4s to high 2s (in the demo, of course, total viewers are irrelevant – except for PR purposes).
The show always does better in the fall, goes down around the Golden Globes in January and then goes back up a little the following September (but not as much as the previous fall), with annual declines about one rating point (the ratings for seasons 3-6 were: 7.57, 6.71, 5.29 and 4.25 – this year it should be in the mid 3s). So, no surprise there.
Considering it is a serialized nighttime soap, “Desperate Housewives” has done very, very well. And it continues to do well – the show is currently in its 7th season and it is ABC’s 2nd highest rated hour-long scripted series (only “Grey’s Anatomy”, also an aging soap, does a little better and not much better).
seriously? I was a fan early on, but this show jumped the shark about 3 years ago. it seems like they just experiment with a bunch of story ideas — throw the shit against the wall and see what sticks. I felt insulted…and why would I stick around at a party like that?!
As the saying goes, the money is in the funny. Think about it. Seinfeld, Friends, Fraiser all had actors making at least a million per episode each. I don’t think there has been an actor in hour-long shows whose made that much….ever.
If ABC were smart they’ll employ the Prison Break/Lost/Every basic cable tactic – split the season in to 2 parts, ending the first part in a hugh cliffhanger (and while people still complain about DH no other show on TV does emotional women better) and airing the episodes uninterrupted. That’s about 13 episodes from September and than 10 from march till sweeps.
Seriously DH has been a monster hit and like any big show its showing it’s age 2 more years is good especially for a soap…
… It did peak with the critics early but it’s still relevant
Good idea get rid of Teri and felicity and do some revamping
Didn’t the cast of Dallas make quite a bundle? And that was an hour long primetime soap
This show is awesome. I hope it gets picked up for at least a few more seasons.
Joan Collins made $120,000 an episode in the 1988/1989 season of ‘Dynasty’ and at the time she was the highest paid actress on television.
It’s shocking that, 22 years later, that salary hasn’t grown all that much.
joan carried Dynasty. There’s 4 stars on DH which means less work time.
Felicity and Marica make that show I love it so much, DH is been an addiction of mine for two years, and thanks to netflix I was able to watch every episode from the previous seasons and Im now caught up- I think its great, like a place to unwind for other housewives like myself! I say keep this “cherry” running its a blast. team scavo!!
I think itz about time they use differant characters i’m getting sick of them four now! It’s about time they started to change the housewives :/ they are getting to old and Andrew running over carlos mother that secret should of been out in season 2 sept for waiting for six long seasons!..Its becoming abit of a joke now! Renee should stay!..she has been one of the best new-comers =) but i do kinda miss katherine and her crazyness on the lane over mike quality acting!
also Edie was good I miss her clashes wiv susen and Gaby xD but really itz about time they bring some new housewives into now getting kinda sick of the old ones x
sigh…..just luv it d bacchnal wat if they cast new peeps and they aint cutting it y fix s.thing if it aint broke…i say keep it comming…
Love DH ! I heard rumor that Susan Lucci was joining the cast, any truth to that ? I hope so, I am also an All My Children fan. (Which goes off air in Sept.
)
The show keeps getting better, hate how we in the uk are 5 episodes behind! Can’t wait for the finale which I will be watching as soon as it goes on megavideo! Bring on series 8!
It would be silly to replace any of the 4 stars now with only 2 seasons left.
How much does Vanessa Williams earn per episode? There is no mention of her compensation.
I think this show should go on into a season 11 with a cliffhanger have a long strong season 12 and end it gentley killing off a couple housewives (Bree and Lanette) but all the women should start getting paid 1 million an episode starting season nine because they deserve it. Most off all they should kill a scavo kid in a car accident to put up more drama have a whole three episodes where like five stars die off but still have their job somehow. The Housewives have worked so hard over the years and deserve all the credit they have gotten I love their show and wish it could go on forever. When its all over they should have a show only covering gabby (Eva Longoria) becuase she has to be a favorite. I love her part.
