“This is a very sad and frustrating day for daytime dramatic television and our members who work on these productions. DGA members are employed on daytime serials as directors, associate directors, stage managers and production associates. The cancellation of these two long-running shows will affect dozens of our members, most of whom have worked on these shows for decades. With the cancellation of ‘One Life to Live,’ there aren’t any more daytime dramas left in New York – once the home of this beloved programming.
“Many have long predicted the demise of daytime dramas, and although there have been signs for some time that this area faced particular challenges, today’s announcement is no less of a blow. We will be reaching out to our affected members and to ABC to make sure that our members are treated fairly throughout this process.”

why would you cancell a tv show that has been on for generations.. this is a very said day for everyone who looks forward to All My Children.. I don’t want another talk show.. we have to many of them now.. put All My Children back on ….
Why? Because the format can no longer sustain itself. Being on television “for generations” isn’t a reason to continue something that can’t pay for itself.
since one life to live will be taken off ,my wife and i
will not be watching any goofy shows put in its place. comercials
will suffer also. the loss of the older generation watching tv
will fade away, therefore money lost !
Yea, they talk about the younger demographic, but forget who has the money.
This format has been on TV since the 1950′s its time for it to go. The object of any network/media company is to actually make money, scripted shows cost much more than a feel good talk show, or a cooking show.
Talk shows, reality shows, court shows, . . . Please, there are way too many already and they re-hash the same topics, interview the same celebrities, and regurgitate the same gossip over and over again. Most of them are just TRASH TV! Yes, soap operas have been around forever, so what? So have sitcoms, the ballet, and the space program (opps! they’re getting rid of that too aren’t they!) Just because it’s been around for a while doesn’t make it bad. Unfortunately, the generation that TV caters to today wants shows like Jersey Shore, Rock of Love, and Housewives full of botox and saline. Soon sitcoms and nighttime dramas will be replaced with game shows where contestants choose their husband or wife from a group of wannabe celebrities! Oops! They did that one already didn’t they! It’s all downhill from here! Goodbye my beloved Pine Valley and Llanview. I enjoyed our visits every day and have no idea what I’m going to do during my lunch hour after September.
Well let me say something, At least with soap operas thy put things that happen in real life out there for you to understand. Example bullying and the effects it has not just on the child being bullied but the parents and all the family.
They are taking something off the air that my grandmother watched, that my mother watched, that my daughter watches and my granddaughter watches. Why would they o this really come on. ABC talk about losing money.
Oh like we need another cooking show………….NOOOOOOOOo thats what the cooking channel is for.
Peggy
Dont take one life to live out. I love that soap. Why cant u put it on for a half an hour. Then the other half whatever u all want. I love one life to live.
Gee, network news can no longer sustain itself and keeping them on because they’ve been on for generations is no reason to continue. ABC should cancel Diane Sawyer’s nightly BS too!
I grew up watching All My Children & One Life To Live with my mother & grandmother , and I am very sad to see my favorite soaps end!!
Do not cancel my shows I have been watching them since I was 11 years old and now I am 42 Years old. There are way to many talk shows and reality shows as it is. None of them I do not allow my kids to watch. They are gross and way to sexual.
I’ve never been able to sit through a whole episode of a soap opera, but I think this is a good example of executives burning off a huge amount of brand loyalty and brand recognition in a similar way.
This obviously a time to figure out how to reboot soap operas to increase their appeal to young viewers.
Reality shows and talk shows are fine, but there are two million of those out there, and they’re starting to wear out their welcome. It’s time to figure out how to do scripted, live-action dramas more efficiently.
it is a sad day. Today I heard from a friend that All My Children and One Life to live were being cancel. Are you guy crazy.
I have been seeing both show since I am 13 years old and know I share the time with my daughers.
I hope you regret this step.
I will never watch another program on ABC see me never\
I’m pissed off to say the least! Amc and oltl are ther ONLY 2 shows I actually watch. The boys in my family
I first started watching “One Life to Live” with some gorgeous gals from Canada in our apartment complex in California when I was single more than 25 years ago. Now, my wife and I watch “OLTL for our lunch hour or on the computer after busy professional days. We do not have live in a trailer, do not have green teeth, do not feast on bonbons, and do not have a still in our basement. OLTL is as close as one gets to watching stage acting and production on tv. These cancellations will go down as one of the biggest debacles in television history. So, “CHEW” YOU, ABC; worse yet, FRONS YOU, ABC. The “REVOLUTION” is your loss of viewers forever!
Well if enough people would actually watch the show they could afford to show it on VOD. If people had to pay for it would they actually still watch? Unfortunately the 70 year old grandmother audience isnt coveted by advertisers and the demo of the soap audience isnt getting any younger…
Incorrect. The demographic ABC is after is my daughter’s generation -SHE WATCHES AMC & OLTL! Oh, and me, the grandmother who advertisers don’t care about – I’m the one with the money and will be boycotting the advertisers on ABC.
I moved to Costa Rica 2 years ago and cannot get AMC OR OLTL on their TV here . I miiss watching those shows very much and Had hoped of One day seeing them again. I could follow the storyline on the internet . I am very sad that these shows were canceled. Please bring them back even if it is for 1/2 hour shows > Talk TV Hate it >
I believe ABC will regret their decision to cancel AMC and OLTL. The replacement shows will get terrible ratings, but they don’t seem to care about what the viewers want. I’ve swithed from watching ABC every morning beginning with the news…but no more. I am boycotting ABC. I am enjoying CBS NBC KTTV and FOX. Too bad ABC didn’t take the reprocussion into consideration before cancelling! May is Sweeps month so let’s send them a message….BOYCOTT ABC!
we all need to stick together, no idle threats, if our shows go then so do we!!
Seems to me thinking caps could have been put on. Daytime dramas could change & become once a week or once a week night time dramas. AMC handled wonderful topics in a way that many generations of people could understand them. Yes, shows need to make money and that is understandable. However, addressing the situation with reality tv shows only leaves out a large segment of the population who are tiring of such shows or never enjoyed them in the first place.
