EXCLUSIVE: Welcome To The Rileys helmer Jake Scott has been set to direct an untitled film about Jeff Buckley, the rising star musician who died tragically at age 30 in 1997. Scott will direct a script by Ryan Jaffe (The Rocker). Michelle Sy and Orian Williams are producing, and Buckley’s mother Mary Guibert will be exec producer.
Buckley, son of the famed but troubled folk musician Tim Buckley, became an influence on musicians from Kurt Cobain to Coldplay. He shunned the spotlight, though, preferring to play small clubs and who for a long time played as a session guitarist to make a living. He recorded one hit album, Grace, and was on his way to doing another when he jumped into Tennessee’s Wolf River, fully clothed, for a spontaneous swim. He got caught in the wake of a passing boat and drowned.
Music rights to Buckley’s songs are part of the rights package and the producers have also optioned the David Browne book Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley, as a resource. Browne will be a consultant. Development of the project was funded by Houston-based financier Amy Vaughan King, and the producers are currently assembling the film’s financing in anticipation of a fall start. UTA reps Scott, who has directed videos with U2, R.E.M., Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, The Cranberries and others. Jaffe’s repped by WME.
Here is Buckley’s rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelulah, one of his most memorable songs:

Time for James Franco to learn how to lip-sync.
Franco’s too old now.
+1
Franco was the first actor that popped into my head too. Would love to see him attempt singing like Joaquin Phoenix in “Walk the Line”
Better yet, Jason Ritter!
brilliant suggestion!
I second that
It’s about time a film was made about this guy, great music.
I have to say James Franco. Look at the character traits and it’s James Franco.
If James can nail James Dean and young Allen Ginsberg as Howl then he can sure as hell do this.
Also, James only 31 years old or something?
If they cast the right person I see an Oscar and about time James got one.
I so agree….
I agree, Franco might have been able to do it a few years back but not anymore…Reeve Carney is looking like a good possibility to me…
James Franco was my 1st choice too.
I am a Casting Director. And a few months ago when I found Franco on Facebook, one of the first things I had said, was that someone needs to do a story of Jeff Buckley. I have loved Buckley for many years and was crushed by his death. Totally under rated singer who should have been more recognized. And my first suggestion was that if & when someone does something on Buckley…Franco needs to be cast. And no he’s not too old! Can NOT wait to see this. Finally someone heard me!
What about Ryan Gosling? He might have the musical chops to pull it off.
Here Here…I don’t know why anyone would think he is
too old…that is ridiculous…He is the perfect choice
imo…
Franco’s not too old at all!
Been thinking that for years! Good call!
Franco is about the same age as JB when he died, so he is definitely not too old to do this bio…In addition, he is
a multi-talented actor, so I would not be surprised if
he could sing as well…There was only one JB, they will
never find anyone to cover his voice…
I am glad to see this bio is back on track, I’ve been following this for sometime and keeping hope…
Because he or noone else could ever come close to comparing with the extaordinarily angelic pipes possesed by the one and only ,ever best all time singer of any genre.I think that about sums it u,p for many J.B.fans for life.
I think ,they should seek out ,for the part ofJeff,The guy who played on “insomnia” .You know.. The punk kid who was first accused of killing the girl
James Franco… would be amazing in this.
Oh please, God, anyone but that insufferable James Franco.
Yeesh, poor James. He needs that Hot Tub Time Machine to go back and pass on the Oscars, Your Highness and General Hospital. At this point he may have to wait another 10 years to salvage his cred. He’d make a great Buckley tho, his is the face that pops into your head when you hear about a Buckley biopic.
Jake is unfortunately way to full of himself and he takes his frustration with his lack of success as a film maker out on those around him. notice they dont mention his previous film work in the release as it is all forgettable.
Reeve Carney who plays Peter Parker on Broadway should play Jeff Buckley. The resemblance and voice are uncanny.
perfect
REEVE CARNEY ABSOLUTELY….!!!! HE’S AMAZING
I’ve been saying this for years now. Not only can Reeve sing but he’s a sick guitarist. He has my vote.
I absolutely agree, Reeve Carney is the man to play the Jeff Buckely role. I met Jeff when he was 28 and you could see his humbleness in his eyes. I met Reeve Carney last week who is also 28. It was uncanny, his eyes told a thousand words just like Jeff, but with humbleness and grace!
Please let Pattinson get a shot at this. He would be perfect since his voice is so similar to Buckley’s.
April fool.
I agree. I think he could do it. There’s a resemblance and he can sing.
You have to be able to act, too. As a result, Pattinson doesn’t qualify.
Haha!! totally agree!!
You’re on crack
why because someone has a different opinion then you do?
yea Robert Pattinson or James Franco, just based on looks alone. Pattinson has the one-up for musical inclination.
Pattison? Ugh. There’s never an air sickness bag around when you need one.
Congratulations, Michelle!
Jason Ritter!! Great actor and deserves it after getting put through the ringer on that crap show he’s on. Jason, you are better than that show! Do Film and thrive!!!
Ritter is too fat and too funny. No way. Dude, do you even know who Jeff Buckley is?
Jeff Buckley had an amazing sense of humor. The person portraying him HAS to be funny.
I had never heard of Reeve Carney until this thread, and after looking into him – WOW. He might really be able to pull it off quite well. MARY-go after this kid!!!
My ex-wife got me into Jeff Buckley, and I wondered if a biopic could get made. This is great news! His voice and music are incredible, and I’d like to see the actor lip-sync vs. trying to sing it, but that seems to be the thing these days.
James Franco might actually work for this role…
It sounds crazy but Penn Badgley actually has an amazing voice, looks just like Buckley and after having just seen him in Margin Call in Berlin I think he may be able to act as he totally held his own. Probably couldn’t get it financed though. Although, get those gossip girl fans out and who knows.
Penn looks a lot like him and is the perfect age… now that’d be a dreamy jeff
Heinously stupid suggestion. Christ on a cracker, it’s like suggesting Robert Pattison play JFK. You people are literally making me sick, I tell you. Pattison and Penn Badgley? April Fools is over, people.
Christ on a cracker. It’s a dumb suggestion on all levels. The Twilight nuts might show up for Robert Pattison but the Gossip Girl fans (such that they are) won’t show up for this kid. I’m not even getting into his limitations as an actor (Jesus how does someone become known as the Poor Man’s Milo Ventimiglia?) Just because he’s on the show doesn’t make him popular or mean he has any finanical draw (The Stepfather anyone?). My understanding is that he plays the least popular male character. Third to the other kids Crawford and Westwick and you’d be an idiot to finance a film like this based on signing either of them today. It may have been worth it to sign Westwick or Crawford to a picture geared toward a young demographic two years ago but not now. Gossip Girl is passe. The brand is dead. Look to Ian Somerholder of The Vampire Diaries (albeit a little long in the tooth) for cachet with that demographic. To be perfectly frank, even at the height of the show’s cultural relevance I would not have signed Badgley.
Nice attempt to stir up talk for Badgley yesterday. Too bad it failed Leslie
Reeve Carney is perfect for this role.
No more Franco, PLEASE ! PLease
Can we bring the real acts like: Jonathan Groff or Emile Hirsch and make a REAL movie !
May I make three suggestions:
1. Cast a somewhat unknown as Buckley. What an incredible part to break an actor with.
2. Please make this on a minimal budget, no more than 20 million, to keep the gritty reality of the late 80s and early 90s that was Buckley’s world with no gloss, and as little artifice as possible.
3. Maybe most importantly, ban any and all renditions of the overplayed “Hallelujah” from this film, and if you can’t do that, leave it out of the “emotional” moments. Buckley has so many other original songs of his own, little heard by most, but deserving of their spotlight in his canon. Think even Leonard Cohen would agree, pay homage to those.
Other than that, go with God.
Ghost knows.
Before the keys (…and phone, and white v-neck t-shirt…) are handed to Franco, I hope an open call could happen, I’ll bet the results would be amazing. An actual musician would really get this at least close to right, most importantly a talented gutarist, because Jeff was a remarkable guitarist. The voice is irrelevant; the lipsyncing is vital, as there is no way to ‘Joaquin’ this role. This Reeve Carney kid looks like he might be able to attempt to channel the energy needed to obsessively-method this role. I also hope that some of Merri’s stills (chosen by Merri, if she would participate) would be incorporated at the end, and maybe the “…whatever you like” part of Jeff’s EPK would be a nice finish. The ethos right now would seem to result in this film potentially blowing it completely — I get it: the warm light in the sky is fading, the barge begins to pass, Jeff wades into the Wolf, sings ‘Whole Lotta Love’ as he relaxes and floats, cue the fade to black… Ugh. Eye roll. I understand Jeff’s death was a part of his life, but I hope it’s not all melancholy and drawn out, as it was a brief episode in the whole life of a dynamic musical genius, and if “Hallelujah” is used around then, I’m going internally postal. Forget “Mystery White Boy”, this film should be titled, “I Woke Up In A Strange Place”, since therein lies pieces of the allegory, in Jeff’s own words. I hope that Mary has forged an authentic alliance with Jeff’s real inner circle, because if they are not behind this project, it plainly shouldn’t happen. They would know best what Jeff would have wanted, and to paraphrase a famous lady, he would not have wanted to be portrayed as a tragic young thing. I have an uneasy feeling about this project.
Beautifully said – I also think that unless Jake Scott has seen him perform live, I’m not sure anyone could capture his essence… A live Buckley performance was a lesson in an artist finding his way…he could make you cringe one minute (as he searched for a key), cry the next, and then make you want to push somebody… the beauty in him live was the trip, not the destination.
James Franco is the only one who should be playing Buckley. Look at the mannerisms, and resemblance.
I totally agree! He has both. I only hope he can do Buckley justice.
Good choice! The dude can sing and act. Franco is an easy choice but I like an unknown, someone like Kris Lemche to play Jeff. I do believe they’ll use recordings because no one can match his voice.
Not to nick-pick or anything, but I’m not sure how Buckley could be described as an influence on Kurt Cobain. Cobain died in April ’94, Grace didn’t come out till August the same year. Perhaps Kurt was hanging out incognito at Sin-é? And if only his influence on Coldplay was more evident. Perhaps they wouldn’t inflict so much turgid, self important dross on an innocent public.
Looks like Franco?! No. I think you meant James Ransone.
I’m so glad his mother is a part of this. Did not want to see a biopic on one of the most talented musicians ever dramatized and filled with false sensational events.
Please NO Franco! He looks like him, THAT’S IT! I can’t think of anybody that could pull it off right now…
If there’s anything Franco can do it’s portraying real, complex people. As it is he’s met with Mary Guibert when an earlier adaption was in the works.
Franco looks just like him is the thing!!
I don’t have a dog in this race, but check out Jeff’s video for “So Real” on youtube… The resemblance to Franco is uncanny.
No actor could play guitar or sing like Jeff Buckley. Too many people overlook his guitar playing and can’t get pass Hallelujah – when there are songs like Grace, and Last Goodbye. No doubt Hollywood and ET will ruin the film, as will people saying they like his music and Tim’s now too, and a whole lot of crap.
20 bucks this goes to Robert Pattison. (Don’t shoot the messenger!)
He has talked about being a huge fan and this being his dream role, he is a musician and like it or not, his credibility will rise with Water For Elephants and the Cronenberg film. Most importantly, now that Jake Scott is at the helm… well Scott LOVES Kristen Stewart… believe me the calls have already happened…. at the very least Pattinson will be a final contender.
Robert Pattinson’s dream role is actually to play the role of Job from the bible but it looks like Will Smith beat him to the punch.
Jeff Buckley was infamous for being a jokester and all around wacky guy. The actor who’ll play him can’t just sing or look like Jeff, they gotta be really funny or they won’t be getting the whole side of Buckley.
If you’e noticed that one of the producers is Orian Williams. His last film was “Control” about Joy Division front man, directed by Anton Corbijn. They handled that with skill and care. The budget I hear is small, like under 10 mil or something.
Can’t wait for this one. Sad ending to a brilliant artist.
Which is why Franco would be perfect for this role. He knows how to balance the line of humor and drama. This biopic shouldn’t be made, but if it has to Franco’s the kid to do it.
I love JB thats a given. I really dont want to see Hollywood screw this up. I am glad to see the involvement of his Mother who is a classy lady. I will admit to being skeptical but I have to say for my money I would like to see Reeves Carney in the role. His non spider-man musical band and sound is nothing short of perfect for the role. I really hope he can be taken seriously after Turn off the dark.
