EXCLUSIVE: Welcome To The Rileys helmer Jake Scott has been set to direct an untitled film about Jeff Buckley, the rising star musician who died tragically at age 30 in 1997. Scott will direct a script by Ryan Jaffe (The Rocker). Michelle Sy and Orian Williams are producing, and Buckley’s mother Mary Guibert will be exec producer.
Buckley, son of the famed but troubled folk musician Tim Buckley, became an influence on musicians from Kurt Cobain to Coldplay. He shunned the spotlight, though, preferring to play small clubs and who for a long time played as a session guitarist to make a living. He recorded one hit album, Grace, and was on his way to doing another when he jumped into Tennessee’s Wolf River, fully clothed, for a spontaneous swim. He got caught in the wake of a passing boat and drowned.
Music rights to Buckley’s songs are part of the rights package and the producers have also optioned the David Browne book Dream Brother: The Lives and Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley, as a resource. Browne will be a consultant. Development of the project was funded by Houston-based financier Amy Vaughan King, and the producers are currently assembling the film’s financing in anticipation of a fall start. UTA reps Scott, who has directed videos with U2, R.E.M., Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, The Cranberries and others. Jaffe’s repped by WME.
Here is Buckley’s rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelulah, one of his most memorable songs:

Thank you!
Huge congrats Ryan and Jake! I cannot wait for an amazing film to unfold–whomever plays the role.
umm not to Gleek out but my money’s on one of those kids… like Mark Salling or Jonathan Groff. at least they both play guitar, and you’d get a little value with either of them–and theyd get a little street cred for branching out in what had better be a gritty biopic
Wanted to write a Buckley project, but thrilled someone is. When I thought about it, I imagined Franco. Not just resemblance– also mannerisms and sense of humor.
So right on.
Way to go, Orian. You’ve worked hard for years, happy to see you doing great projects!
Anybody heard Penn Badgley sing? He’s actually sounds good and he got the look.
Jeff Buckley’s music is incredible, I would love to learn more about his life story.
What does this mean for the Dan Algrant in-development version at Smuggler Films?
I agree with mqa, Pattinson should be the odds on favorite thanks to Kristen Stewart’s great relationship with Jake Scott and he’s also supposed to be a good musician. Besides his gushing over the role will probably help him.
JONATHAN GROFF!! That guy is such an incredible talent. He definitely has the look, and most importantly, he has the ability to sing the music as well.
I think will smith might come on board as producer. He wants Jaden to do the part.
Reeve Carney looks like Buckley and has the same affect when performing, plus he’s a fan of Buckley’s music. This should be a no-brainer.
beautiful song! beautiful man! yikes, gone waaaay too soon! would love to see Penn Badgley, if he can sing, do this movie! I think he’s way better than Gossip Girls let him be….& Franco is kind of a nut, but he IS cute! Im so happy he’s gone from my soap I dont care what he does!
I will keep saying this until I make it happen: JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT.
Franco stopped being an actor around the time Freaks & Geeks got cancelled and has now become a long-form performance art piece called “James Franco.”
True Blood’s Sam Trammell should play Jeff Buckley. He looks a lot like him.
I am glad a biopic on Jeff Buckley will occur. He was a phenomenal singer, guitar player and technical composer. Appropriately, he is well-known in many areas of the world-France, U.K., Australia, but, ironically, not in the U.S. The reasons for this discrepancy probably have a lot to do with the fact that Jeff broke all precedents in his singing and composing. He did not shy away from exercising emotion in his performances, and he did not follow the conservative rules about structure and length of composition. It is difficult for an iconoclast in America’s entertainment industry, and Jeff was an iconoclast.
Franco would be a good choice: his personality, his quiet intelligence, his looks, are not too unlike Jeff’s. The person chosen to play Jeff must not an individual who is prone to try to turn the biopic into a celebration of himself.
I look forward to observing how this biopic develops.
Yes….Reeve Carney is a ringer for Buckley, and he is the right age! Franco is too old! And too well known. Carney can actually sing like Buckley as well. Reeve Carnet people! Google him.
Dontcha think a movie about his Dad should precede one about him ?
Love the misinformation here. Exactly how was a a young man who had his first EP, a live four song set which was released after all of Nirvana’s recorded output had already come out an influence on Kurt Cobain? Is Kurt recording a new CD in the afterlife influenced on Buckley’s work?
Jeff Buckley was an interesting guy with a great voice who had one great record and one messy misfire under his belt when he died tragically because of his own stupidity. But that’s about it. How they’re going to make this story anything more than a straightforward Buddy Holly/La Bamba biopic is very questionable. But hey, that might work. Just don’t make up stories about the guy.
Ethan Hawke?
Good choice but he’s way too old now. He can sing, play, and act, and even looks like him. But again, I think he was already too old to play him when Jeff died.
very promising start. Enough slings and arrows to fill a slew of quivers. Can’t wait to see the film.
James Franco is the obvious choice. His mannerisms and look are uncanny for Buckely’s… Ritter is good on TV, but he didn’t inspire in The Perfect Age of Rock & Roll.. so I doubt he’ll get a real shot at it..
I’d hope for someone less expected. Rob Pattinson could blow it out of the water.. and I’m sure he’d have no trouble not brushing his hair
After Jordan Scott now Jake Scott will make his way up as well. I hope he turns out to be as great as his father Ridley!
Go Jake!
first off, franco’s not too old. Buckley was 31 when he died.
second, and most importantly, the singing voice of the actor is not important, because no one can do justice to buckley’s voice. I don’t think the director would dare use someone’s else’s voice in the film to imitate him. I don’t think it’s comparable to Phoenix’s imitation of Cash because cash didn’t have the vocal agility or range that Buckley had. Obviously not to say he wasn’t a talent, but buckley’s vocal acrobatics are just astonishing.
Pattinson can at least play the guitar, I dont know about franco’s playing abilities.
Reeve Carney looks and sounds a lot like Jeff. James Franco could play Tim Buckley, who was beautiful and charismatic in person.
James would only get a very small part in the movie then, because Tim wasn’t really a part of Jeff’s life.
