EXCLUSIVE: Disney doesn’t release Real Steel until Oct. 7, but already DreamWorks is getting the machinery moving on a sequel to the Shawn Levy-directed drama that stars Hugh Jackman. I’m told the studio has commissioned John Gatins, who scripted the first film, to start on the second installment. It’s unusual to see that occur so early, but I can recall it happening when Warner Bros commissioned a Hangover sequel after early tests showed the movie was going to be a big hit. Development on the sequel’s just getting under way, and deals will have to be made with Jackman and Levy. Gatins is repped by UTA.
DreamWorks has gotten strong response to internal screenings of the film, and at a CinemaCon presentation of footage in Las Vegas. The film is a Rocky-meets-Transformers tale of a prize fighter whose pugilistic skills are rendered obsolete when human boxers are replaced by robots. The fighter (Jackman) becomes a boxing promoter and finds a discarded robot that wins and wins. The fighter also discovers he has a 13-year old son, who comes along for the ride as the robot heads toward the top against scary competition. The film is based on a short story by Richard Matheson (who, aside from writing the novel I Am Legend, also scripted DreamWorks partner and Real Steel exec producer Steven Spielberg’s directing debut Duel). Real Steel is produced by Angry Films’ Don Murphy and Susan Montford and Levy, with Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey exec producing.

Saw the trailer in front of Sucker Punch. All I could think of was “Rock’em Sock’em Robots: The Movie.” Did Hasbro/Ideal have anything to do with this? Pass.
Tron 2, Airbender 2, Sucker Punch Superman, now this. What’s with all the unwanted sequels?
Unwanted? The movie hasn’t even come out yet! It’s going to be awesome-it’s a good story, with kick-axx effects–with Levy directing, gotta be winner
I heard they can’t move forward on this until the purchase the film rights to the Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots toy line.
Wow, I thought the trailer looked horrible. Very surprised to see this news.
Based on your comment I went to watch the trailer and you are wrong… it is good.
The trailer is short and fast-the story isn’t new, but it IS different, interesting, and done fabulously! You’re going to LOVE the movie and be blown away by the special effects (which will seem perfectly natural in the movie) A lot of great talent went into the making of it–including over 1,000 Michiganians from background to decent roles (yay!) Hugh Jackman does not go from Wolverine to dumpster-diving, he’s no fool. He wouldn’t do a crap movie. Wait, watch and be amazed.
Hop’s success is proof that silly movies conquer box office.
Robot Jox. Go watch the classic that inspired this remake.
Hugh Jackman is no Lee Marvin. That Twilight Zone episode was great.
“Battling Maxo!”
Omigawd! Someone else remembers Robot Jox!
Lovely little B-movie…
One of the most awful trailers I have seen in years. The audiences I have seen this with have laughed through the entire promo. I’m sure it has tested through the roof… or is this just a ploy by Dreamworks to convince us all they have a hit on their hands. God I hope this fails.
This is going to be a great family movie. There are such things as great movies without sex and drugs. A lot of action , great effects and a good story. And rock em sock em has nothing to do with it.
ABSOLUTELY! God forbid a great movie without someone getting killed or laid-how did it ever make it thru hollywood? heck, they even swear in disney movies nowadays…
Looks horrible. Utter stupidity. Have we really sunk this low?
Read the script. Surprisingly good, so who knows…
my new career!
very surprised by this. the trailer looks like a real turd. But we must remember to never underestimate the stupidity of the movie going audience….see Twilight
Doesn’t anyone realize the only reason studios announce they’re starting work on a sequel to a film that hasn’t even come out yet is just a lame publicity gimmick to gain “buzz” for the first film’s release? They did it with Green Lantern and also the new Spider-Man movie. Come on – SUPER OBVIOUS!! Nobody’s greenlighting a sequel until the first film shows some dollar signs.
Thank you! Robot Jox is a classic MGM title. A true Robot Jox remake would be much bigger than this clever robot version of Over The Top.
No he wasn’t and no it doesn’t. This movie looks atrociously awful.
For all the people who have posted a negative comment about this movie, which no one has watched yet and won’t be released until the fall…Go see it first, then make a comment. This movie is not even out yet! Shame on you for making an uneducated guess on this movie! Hold your tongues!!! If you have nothing beter to do with your time, why don’t you try to make a movie yourself?! Making any movie is not an easy task…we should all praise movie makers for their amazing efforts and for providing beautiful magic for us all to enjoy!
TO ITSAWRAP 11: You must have been on the set???
TO EVERYONE ELSE: I was an extra in this movie and you would have been amazed at what went into the making of it… I must admit my first thought was this is geared toward a man’s audience, but so wrong after being in some scenes, I realized this is going to be a good family movie for men, women and children. Before you make negative comments on here or anywhere else-see the movie, then if you don’t like it-well it’s a free world to express it. Until you’ve seen it, your judgements has no facts in this subject.
You douchebags are too early to judge. Wait until the next trailer comes out.
I loved working with you guys on the first real steel had a ball and cannot wait for you to come to detroit and do more great things for our community. we welcome you guys with open arms!
Have a wonderful day!
Donna
I just saw the movie, worth it!! I can see why they are working on # 2.
Hey, I watched it, and it was superb. Fantastic acting by both Hugh Jackman and Dakota Goyo. Honestly, I think it was better than Transformers. I’d definitely watch the sequel! And, it’s just my opinion, so don’t be offended even if you’ve watched the show and think it’s not as good as Transformers.
