Tom Hanks has become officially attached to star in Cloud Atlas, an adaptation of the David Mitchell novel that consists of six interconnected stories. The Matrix helmers Andy and Lana Wachowski and Run Lola Run helmer Tom Tykwer have signed on to write and co-direct the film. Warner Bros is set to distribute the film in North America, and Focus Features International has signed on to handle international sales and distribution of the film overseas. They will sell rights at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.
Shooting on the film will begin in September. The logline: An epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution. The film has been rumored for some time, with James McAvoy and Halle Berry among the actors who’ve been rumored to take part.
The film will be produced by Five Drops’ Grant Hill and Stefan Arndt, with Philip Lee exec producing.

Awesome book. Hope they do it justice.
is Lana a sister or other relative??
There’s a third option.
Sounds like pretty edgy filmmakers for Hanks to cozy up with. High cool factor here.
How the flark are they gonna make this not suck? The book is so epic.
I hope the Wachowskis dont mess it up. I always have high hope for their films, only to leave post the First Matrix w/ a smile upside down
After Bound and Matrix 1, the Wachowski’s fall from greatness to crap film makers has been astounding. Here’s hoping they can make a good movie again.
I can’t believe Hanks is cool with being turned Asian, instead of casting Asian actors…
I’ve always wanted to see Tom Hanks do a movie with Tom Cruise. They are both incredible actors and it would be amazing to see them bounce off each other in a film.
I hope to see Tom Hanks and Bruce Willis do another movie together after only having one scene together in Bonfire of the Vanities (1990). They are both incredible actors and it would be amazing to see them bounce off each other in a film again.
So Tykwyer and the Wachowskis will all direct together? Hopefully that’s not too many cooks in the kitchen. But I’m intrigued by the logline and all of that talent in one place.
Surely there’s way too much going on in the book to reasonably fit into one film?! I mean, without giving much away, there are (counts).. 5..no..6(I think?) separate stories in Cloud Atlas; each with its own full story-arc, each indispensable to the overall tale.
I’ll admit to being really excited that the Wachowski’s are behind this, but unless they’re planning on developing this as a ‘Carlos’-style 5 hour epic, I’m skeptical that they’ll manage to do justice to such a fantastic tale.
That said, despite my faith being shaken by Matrix 3, I’m otherwise hopeful.
PS – am I the only one who thinks they deserve credit for Speed Racer?! Bearing in mind it’s a KID’s flick, it’s brilliantly cuckoo, with
superb set pieces, zany editing and a near psychadelic color scheme. Poor box office, true, but that’s not everything. (It is? Ah..)
With respect to Speedracer, I don’t think they deserve credit for making a good movie, but they do deserve some credit for the (at times) wonderful visuals. I agree it looked brilliantly cuckoo. It just didn’t work as a movie…at all.
babel lite
Not even close.
Cloud Atlas is an astonishing masterpiece of a book.
How is it possible to make a movie out of it? One with less than a five-hour running time… ?
