After months of speculation about Glenn Beck’s future at Fox News, the cable news channel today announced that the controversial host will exit his eponymous daily talk show later this year.
After the end of his high-profile gig as a daily talk show host, Beck will keep some presence at Fox News. Beck’s production company, Mercury Radio Arts has inked a deal to develop and produce several specials for the channel as well as content for other Fox News platforms. “Glenn Beck is a powerful communicator, a creative entrepreneur and a true success by anybody’s standards,” Roger Ailes, Chairman and CEO of Fox News said. “I look forward to continuing to work with him.”
As expected, Joel Cheatwood, SVP Development at Fox News, is leaving the channel to join Mercury Radio Arts as EVP, effective April 24. He will serve as the company’s liaison with Fox News. Glenn Beck has posted the biggest declines among all cable news programs for the past several months, leading to speculation that Fox News may not renew Beck’s contract, which was up at the end of the year. Even with the rating drops, Glenn Beck continues to be the third highest rated program on cable news, but has been losing advertiser support while also alienating viewers both on the left and on the right. “I truly believe that America owes a lot to Roger Ailes and Fox News,” Beck said. “I cannot repay Roger for the lessons I’ve learned and will continue to learn from him and I look forward to starting this new phase of our partnership.”

The Goebbels comparison is valid insofar as he elevated the techniques of disinformation, manipulation and demagogy to near art as Beck has done, much to his own benefit and that of Fox News’ shareholders (until recently).
Beck hasn’t killed anyone nor directed the killings of anyone or broken any laws that I’m aware of (the dubious morality of shilling for companies he has an undisclosed interest in aside). What he has done is lie. A lot. Along the way effectively delineating the space between “Us” and “Them” when in fact we are all countrymen.
And in doing so Beck has laid the groundwork for legitimizing violence as an appropriate response to political disagreement. By fomenting a siege mentality, by whipping up a constant drumbeat of fear, paranoid, distrust and perceived repression he has helped degrade the level of political discourse.
In other words he’s a part of the problem not the solution. I suspect little will change that.

Beck had a lousy timeslot 5:00 PM EST, yet he beat the combined ratings of MSNBC, CNN, CNN headline News and CNBC at that time slot and he had over 50 percent higher ratings than primetime shows on MSNBC and CNN.
Being the third highest rated FOX News show means he was beating prime time shows, aka Greta at 10 PM.
I’d like to see Beck have more primetime specials on FOX and be able to speak more in 2012 election season.
Normally, if I don’t like a show or find it boring or I don’t like the host, I just don’t watch it. I don’t wish death on people or are gleeful that they are fired or whatever. If you want to talk about crazy, read some of the comments above. I’d say there’s a lot of projection going on.

Granted Beck’s schtick wasn’t pulling in viewers as it had in the past and thus less advertising dollars he’s still a big ratings fish in the small ratings pond.
I would think that with the upcoming election his show would see a resurgence but perhaps the trend downwards was too strong.
Beck’s tactics were always flimsy and his rants couldn’t compare to the more engaging tactics on The O’Reilly Factor (love him or hate him the format itself is engaging) and to a lesser/more conservative skewed degree Sean Hannity’s show.
Beck will still have a future because he still has an audience and although I personally don’t see the draw (i’m not one to be partial to any pundit on the news networks, I prefer my news spoken not acted) there are those who like him so he’ll continue on in books, lectures and at the end of the day….Hollywood loves a comeback so while we kick the Charlie Sheen’s and Glenn Beck’s when they’re down just remember we did that to Mickey Rourke and Robert Downey Jr. And for those who might claim “Beck isn’t a celebrity” I beg to differ because he’s cut from the same cloth as Sarah Palin, Keith Olbermann, Rush Limbaugh, Arianna Huffington, etc. All celebrities.
