Graham King’s GK-tv and Gale Anne Hurd’s Valhalla Entertainment have partnered to develop and produce Port Royal, an hourlong series based on an original idea by Hurd. Set in the late 17th century on the island of Jamaica, the series will chronicle the namesake port’s notorious rise as the “richest and wickedest city” in the new world, and as a self-governing safe haven for cutthroat pirates, corrupt politicians and ruthless merchants. Executive producing the project are Hurd, King, GK-tv’s Craig Cegielski and GK Films’ Tim Headington. Hurd exec produces AMC hit The Walking Dead. GK-tv’s first series, Camelot, premiered on Starz on Friday and will have a screening at MIPTV tomorrow.

Hmmm. Cutthroat Island the TV show, anyone?
Hopefully, they’ll do a bit of research instead of just rehashing the Hollywood pirate cliches. Trust me, Calico Jack Rackham is a LOT more interesting than Captain Jack Sparrow.(Rackham was involved in a three-way relationship with she-pirates Anne Bonney and Mary Read- and when the three were finally capture, the ladies were spared the gallows only because British Law forbid hanging pregnant women, and Calico Jack had gotten the pair knocked up just in the nick of time). History provides a crop of interesting characters that, in the hands of good writers and actors, would be pure gold. (Google “Charlotte de Berry” and see what I mean).
A little more truth being told, it is NOT believed Jack knocked up Mary, but yes, he did knock up Anne. Mary is believed to have had another lover aboard the ship, but it was not Calico. The ‘belief’ is that it was actually a man who was pressed into service aboard the ship, the same one she is believed to have defended in a duel. But there is little more than hearsay to back that up either.
But I agree, they are amazing characters, if done right, and would be wonderful to see on the screen.
Unfortunately, Calico Jack, Anne and Mary weren’t there in this period of time. This is before the Golden Age of Piracy. Would actually be Henry Morgan and the buccaneers. I’ve been to Port Royal and walked in their footsteps. So this will be cool if they stick with the characters of that time period.
Deadwood in the ocean anybody? This sounds like one hell of a concept. Let’s see if they can get a diverse cast together to make it interesting.
you beat me to the punch KissOfdeath…I was going to say “Floating Deadwood.”
I too think this will have great potential and hope to have the early days of New York City built into the locations. A lot of trade and movement between the two.
Tim Headington and Gale Anne Hurd together? Count on this being a very well-produced show.
Yes, because Tim Headington is such a well-seasoned, real producer. Nothing to do with him being a rich oil baron getting fleeced by the usual Hollywood suspects…
“Original idea” from Hurd? Sounds exactly like Michael Crichton’s “Pirate Latitudes” to me.
I bet you can’t find another similarity other than 17th century Jamaica to make your comparison stick, my snarky friend.
Please hire Scott Kozar to write for this.
so this is development not even set up at a network? i’m more interested in babies being born that erections being popped…
No doubt about it, Gale is on a roll!
On the off-chance this is actually Wesley Strick…the screenplay to True Believer is a gem. One of the best legal thrillers ever.
Oh, and the pirate concept sounds cool, too. And if you know the history, there’s a build in season/series finale– the tsunami that wiped the city out in 1692.
The idea has great potential, potential that grows exponentially if they go towards historic verisimilitude over the usual fantastical adventure format of other pirate related projects. Port Royal history is full of diverse and dynamic characters, loads of conflict, drama, and yes, even some action and adventure.
I wish them luck with this one. If done right it could be really good.
Scott Kosar? Dude is good at low budget genre remakes, not high concept material like this.
Awesome coupling of GK & Hurd. Sounds like a winner.
what does this mean? where is it set up?
I am beyond excited for this. I studied Pirate History in college (don’t ask) and it was a truly fascinating time period to be living in the Caribbean. Google Francois L’Ollonais and prepare to be amazed. This guy ate someone’s heart that he had just cut out of their chest. The history here is so amazing and interesting that they won’t even need to “Hollywood” it up. Very excited to see how this turns out.
Sorry folks, this script already exists and it’s fucking incredible. Set up at Showtime.
Sorry folks, this same exact idea already exists. As a script. And it’s genius. Set up at Showtime.
Navy men were also crude and clever, much like the commander. They knew an officer could never go back on his word.
