EXCLUSIVE: Julia Louis-Dreyfus is returning to primetime, this time on cable. HBO has picked up to series Veep, the D.C.-set comedy pilot from British comedian, writer and director Armando Iannucci, which stars the Seinfeld alumna. Set “very near the White House,” Veep centers on former Sen. Selina Meyer (Louis-Dreyfus), who becomes Vice President only to discover that the job is nothing like she expected and everything everyone ever warned her about. Co-starring in the project are Anna Chlumsky as her chief of staff, Tony Hale as her right-hand man and Sufe Bradshaw as her assistant as well as Reid Scott, Tim Simons and Matt Walsh. Iannucci co-wrote and directed the pilot. He executive produces the series with Chris Godsick and New York Magazine’s Frank Rich, who has a deal with HBO. Simon Blackwell, who co-wrote the pilot with Iannucci, co-executive produces, and Louis-Dreyfus serves as producer. Veep begins production this fall for a 2012 premiere.
This is the second consecutive female-centered comedy pilot ordered to series at HBO following the January pickup of the Lena Dunham pilot executive produced by Judd Apatow. Louis-Dreyfus has won two Emmys, one for NBC’s Seinfeld and one for CBS’ The New Adventures of Old Christine. She has had a presence at HBO with a recurring role on Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, where she plays herself. Iannucci has long political satire experience. His popular and BAFTA-winning British comedy series The Thick of It satirizes the inner workings of the British government. (Blackwell was one of his top writers on that series). The Thick of It spawned the 2009 feature spinoff In the Loop starring Tom Hollander and James Gandolfini that earned an Oscar nomination for its script, co-written by Iannucci and Blackwell. HBO’s latest series, fantasy drama Game of Thrones, premieres tomorrow night.

Read the script, it’s smart and funny. Hopefully America will find it appealing.
where can we find the script online?
I don’t have to read the script and I could guess that this is an American attempt to make something along the lines of the BBC’s “yes minister”
if you read the actual post you would see it’s an scottish attempt.
With that fired NY Times reporter lightweight Frank Rich as a producer, six people in his neighborhood in NYC
May find it funny but let’s leave America out of it.
HBO “really,” has a Palin obsession.
I dont think this has anything to do with Sarah Palin, does it? Script makes it seem like she is a normal politician, former senator. Please dont get all the right wing nuts on this board….surprised they even read this. Why would they bother?
Why?
Because it’s about a woman?
You show your true colors.
if this fails (which it probably will) can we agree that its time for JLD to just go away? need a 3 strikes rule in this town…
Is it the emmys that bother you? Is it that she co-starred on the most successful sitcom of all time? Get a life. You are the expert of nothing.
Exactly why do you care? Wishing bad on people (who are at least trying to do something creative, by the way) probably got you where you are today…
three strikes? more like two successful sitcoms. “old christine” was successful creatively and had a loyal audience.
3 strikes? Her last 3 series 9 years, 2 years and 5 years. What actress has a better track record than that?
3 strikes?I never watched it, but The New Adventure of Old Christine lasted 5 seasons and I believe she was nominated for 5 Emmys and won 1 for the show.
JLD is pure talent, douche bag. Are you insane? She is hilarious, sexy, self-deprecating. An actual comedic actress in a town of pretty faces trying desperately to garner a laugh — while (trying to) maintain their sexuality. Well, JLD doesn’t need to “TRY”… BECAUSE SHE JUST NATURALLY IS FANTASTIC. Funny Sexy = hard combo to nail. JLD nails it. I work in this gross business, I live in this shallow town, and while I haven’t worked with her, I am a huge fan. You’re in the minority on this one “3rd Strike” – which is where you belong, sonny. BTW I hate you.
You really are…something
You mean a third Emmy to go with her other two?
I think we can all agree it’s time for YOU to go away.
Script was great- so was “in the loop”. JLD, Chlumsky, and Hale are great! My fave HBO show is “Hung”
This is great news…JLD and Ianucci are both talented pros, and funny. Will be nice to see a real comedy, instead of another tired dramedy.
Holy crap, what a photo!
Julia is HOT!!
…she was when this pic was taken
terrific news. Hopefully this will be a real comedy, not a tired dramedy with a woman in peril.
Our son just started working in this series. He says it’s hillarious. Definitely a comedy, with a bite.
Really? Haven’t we all had enough of Julia Louis-Dreyfus on TV? I’m sure the script is good, but really. Enough Julia already.
I so agree. I mean take a long(er) vacay and smell the roses, already. I’d really like to see someone else have a go at this. I would.
Hurray for My Girl!
This show has nothing to do with the “wacko from wasilla”! This I know for a fact.
Yes, because 5 seasons and an Emmy win for Old Christine was a real failure.
I will watch anything with Julia. I even loved Watching Ellie!!!!
Anna Chlumsky? From My Girl?
“3rd strike”? Are you actually counting The New Adventures of Old Christine as an outright failure? It ran for five seasons and won JLD the Emmy. It may not have raked in the cash like some other CBS sitcoms, but by no means did it fail.
2012! WTF?! Aside from the year-long wait we have to go through, I’m super excited for the return of Julia. She’s fantastic. I actually HATE anything and everything politics but will be tuning in just for her! Long live Old Christine!
I’m so thrilled that this has gone to series. I don’t know much about it, but there is immense talent both in front and behind the camera!
I guess she really did want to say “fuck”.
“the job is nothing like she expected and everything everyone ever warned her about”
If she’s a senator surely she knows what the vice president does and does not do. How could it be a surprise?
This sounds like something, something really good.
Julia was around long before Seinfeld & was no surprise as the sardonic yet insecure female among the nebbishes. WHile OLD C… was not something I watched, I was pleased she found a vehicle to continue her talent. I really enjoyed her work on CURB & If VEEP is anything like that + Brit humor, it will be closer to her own comic chops. yet one more reason to live
BTW Anna Chlumsky has played a similar role in 2 flicks – she was excellent – that’s 2 reasons.
If anyone thinks that this show will have anything to do with Palin REALLY need to look at Iannucci’s body of satirical work. Chou sky really shone in In The Loop and I’m glad that she’s involved. If Iannucci can ‘translate’ something half as genius as The Thick Of It, he’ll have a success.
My only concern as an Englishman is that Iannucci’s writing might be a little too high brow for US audiences (no offence intended). I suppose HBO is the right home for such a show.
This is from the writers of the similar UK series “The Thick of It” and its movie counterpart “In the Loop” and a such it’ll probably be fantastic. Can’t wait to see it.
You’re so right, Lars BNL. The writers are terrific. One of the producers, Chris Godsick, has longstanding ties with many British actors and writers. The cast includes the level of actors who can deliver the material. I’d love to see an American political comedy in the style and tone of The Thick of It.
Ha, yeah, JLD wants to say ‘fuck’. I was so surprised that Chlumsky did so well under Iannucci’s direction and writing.
JLD and Iannucci is honestly (no hyperbole) a dream combination for me.
The best news for me is the involvement of Simon Blackwell as writer/producer. Funny, funny man. See his recent Peep Show episode (Super Hans coming off drugs “I’ve been knitting like an electric nan”) for the most recent proof.
To bad I dumped my HBO last Monday because of the 2 Republican hit flicks in the works, and I didn’t forget about the libs favoret whore Bill Maher. Let me know if it’s any good because I far as I care there is no HBO anymore, I don’t like what they think they have to do to stay on the Hollywood A-List.
Good, stick to Fox News and Kirk Cameron DVDs. Complete the experience by moving to Alaska. You won’t be missed.
