No Week 2 drop-off for HBO’s fantasy series Game of Thrones, which drew 2.2 million viewers at 9 PM on Sunday, matching its premiere audience. The 11 PM airing averaged 732,000 viewers, almost identical to premiere night’s 11 PM audience of 755,000. So far, the first episode of Game of Thrones has been seen by more than 6.8 million viewers across different platforms. Meanwhile, at 10 PM, the Season 2 premiere of Treme (605,000) was down dramatically from its series debut last April, which averaged 1.1 million viewers. The combined audience was 740,000, down from 1.4 million for the series premiere last year.

Story wise, Treme is all over the map. The central point of the storyline needs to be a little more focused. It’s a challenge to care about all these characters. And the daughter of John Goodman (who’s character committed sucide last season)personality has drastically changed from last season. It’s just not realistic.
I agree. Way too much going on here and I also think that there’s a bit too much music, or at least in this season’s opener. Why don’t they just do a big concert and call it a day instead of trying to weave bits and pieces of story throughout?
Game of Thrones (which isn’t bad, actually) had a great way to sneak in a little lesbo action last night between all the blood letting. High art for sure.
It’s not realistic that her personality might change drastically seven months after her father committed suicide?
Hm. I don’t agree. I’d be pretty astonished if she were the same…
(And yes, I saw Toni tell Lt. Colson that Sofia thinks it was an ‘accident’, but… I have doubts on that…)
It actually makes New Orleans seem like its full of whiny, distracted people who would rather indulge in hobbies than rebuild their city. Not a single likable character in the whole series. There is no question that “The Wire” was the best television show ever made, which makes “Treme” even more of a disappointment.
Have you been to NOLA lately? I got bored with Treme because it was far too accurate in it’s characterizations. When I was there two years ago for Mardi Gras, the locals couldn’t have been less friendly if they tried. From the front desk staff at the hotel who spent five minutes complaining about how long it took them to get to work because of the parade route closures when I had just gotten off an all night flight (and coincidentally had to deal with that same traffic) to the constant sometimes under the breath sometimes not “all you MF’ing tourists need to go home” comments in the streets and shops, I have never felt less welcome anywhere in my life. I’m a huge jazz fan, and I’ve wanted to visit the French Quarter for the better part of my adult life, so it was such a let down. I heard it was better this year, probably because they realized they need all us “MF’in Tourists” and our money to save their shattered economy, but I have no plans on ever going back. As if to add insult to injury, look at how the Japanese have dealt with their recent disaster, and compare that to Post-Katrina NOLA. Sad, just sad.
Seriously? Have YOU been to NOLA lately? I’m sure no one in the world has any desire to go to whatever corn shucking town you’re from. However when I say I’m from New Orleans, people are interested. It’s a welcoming, homey, fun city. Maybe you just weren’t touristing correctly. I hear it’s very hard to mingle with people when you have your head up your ass the whole trip.
Both are excellent shows and more people need to watch them!
Would’ve helped if HBO had advertised Treme. I’m a fan of the show and only incidentally realized they were premiering the day before.
I’m a Treme fan and I had no idea this was on until just now.
Because no matter how awesome The Wire was, Treme suuuuuuuuuuuuucks.
Treme is easily one of the best shows on TV. Give it a few weeks it’ll be great again. David Simon is the man!
HBO did a bad job of promoting Treme this season. A lot of friends that loved the first season had no idea the second season was premiering. Including myself till I read it on here.
Game of Thrones is one of the best shows on tv. However, Treme sucks.
Treme is garbage. The sooner HBO gets that sinkhole off the schedule, the better.
I didn’t know Treme new season had premiered until I saw it recorded on the DVR. HBO ignored The Wire too. I was the only one among friends and colleagues watching The Wire first episode onward and trying to tell everybody how great it was. I hated The Sopranos after the first season or two so it was especially irritating to see HBO putting all their money and time into promoting Sopranos especially for awards. Anyhoo, on Treme, I’m a fan, not like I was a fan of The Wire. But I watched the season premiere wanting to like it. And I didn’t. I realized I’ll be fast-forwarding through all the white-people scenes because all the white characters and storylines are at the least dull and at their worst, extremely grating and annoying. How many shots of the violinist making weird faces while playing will be forced to endure? Because that’s all there is to her, and yet it was half the show last night. I am white myself if that helps to know. This is totally about the writing and/or casting.
no joke. i learned about treme season premiere via an anthony bourdain tweet and i love the show and i watch too much tv.. yet somehow i missed this……..
maybe give treme just a small taste of that throne marketing budget so people know about it???
Didn’t even realize Treme was back…………. Loved it last season. I will catch it on DEMAND………… Seems HBO spent so much time promoting Game of Thrones……….. They forgot about TREME……
Here is another one that loves Treme and didn’t see a single promo for it until the day before it premiered (maybe it was after Cinema Verite?). I remember seeing it and thinking I needed to watch the season 1 DVDs before it started, and then I was shocked to see it would be airing in less than 24 hours.
I can understand Treme getting low ratings but Game of Thrones deserves a lot better than just 2.2m.
I’m just halfway through the first season of Treme at the moment, so thank you VERY much to the first poster for blabbing a big bloody spoiler about how it ends. Jerk.
When’s Life & Times of Tim coming back?? Best animated show never seen!
I’m as big a WIRE fan as there is, but TREME is not a well-written show. Way too many story-lines and none of them are that engrossing. It is also over-written. We’re being told about the violence, corruption, etc…but hardly ever seeing any of it. What made the WIRE great was the subtlety. I’ll still keep watching, but I’m not sure it will matter come next season.
It’s very risky to bring in a major actor, like John Goodman, for the first season, and then lose him. He was both the emotional and intellectual anchor of the show last year, and now there’s a void. All the actors are fine, but there’s no longer an alpha character in the show. If they don’t fix this quick, the show is doomed.
I watch HBO all the time….I just watched that bizaare “Cinema Verite” movie…I watch HBO East, HBO Plus, whatever goofy channels they have.
I saw z-e-r-o ads for Treme in all that time. Not one.
Embarrasing.
Treme is a heartfelt and well-intentioned bust. Season 2 will be its last, which is a disincentive from getting invested in it.
It seems as if HBO hates David Simon (Wire/Treme creator) otherwise why would they do so little in marketing/advertising? HBO always seems to have shows they completely ignore and they are usually the most compelling and critically acclaimed shows. It’s funny how HBO speak is we’re all about story and creativity but they poor all the ad dollars into shows that don’t really need it or at least don’t need nearly as much. Oh well…
I meant, pour all the ad dollars…excuse my typo.
