Sony Pictures has released a Red Band trailer for the Media Rights Capital comedy 30 Minutes Or Less. The R-rated laffer stars Danny McBride (who’s becoming king of the Red Band trailer) and Aziz Asari, and reunites Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer with his star Jesse Eisenberg. The film opens Aug. 12.

I read this script and thought this was going to be a really good, funny movie. I feel much less confident now
Wow. Just awful. Painful.
Yeah, am I the only one that can’t stop thinking about that poor guy in real life that had this bomb pizza thing happen to him? And he got blown up?
No, you’re not the only one. As soon as I saw the bomb that’s what I thought too. Plus, it looks awful, unless this is the first trailer ever made for a movie where they left out the funny parts on purpose.
I thought of that too. That case always disturbed the hell out of me. Never did it occur to me, “Hey, what a zany, fun situation.” So, yeah, I’ll pass on this.
If you just read the wikipedia article on the guy, it says they proved he was involved in the robbery but freaked out when he found out his partners used a real bomb.
I don’t watch “East Bound and Down” and wasn’t one of the twelve people who saw “Your Highness” but nonetheless I am so so so so so sick of Danny McBride.
No charisma, no humor, plays the same character the same way in everything. Just go away please.
Oh wait, I’m just a bitter hater — I mean the guy’s obviously very talented and has amazing range and abilities as a comic actor and lights up the screen and elevates everything he’s in. Uh. Yeah.
Danny McBride was great for his role in Pineapple Express… He was fine in a few other things, but his comedic style doesn’t translate for an expansive audience or especially (in the case of Your Highness) a leading man role. I too am sick of him.
However, I will probably check out this movie because I think Asiz Ansari deserves some love. He too is a sidekick comedian who will get old quickly, but I love him on Parks and Rec and I’d like to see how he handles his time on the big screen. I hope he turns out more like Steve Carrell where I love him in movies and on TV, instead of like John Krasinski where I love him on TV, but he can’t handle the big screen, at least to me…
Watch “Eastbound and Down”!! I didn’t think much of him but I recently watched seasons 1 and 2 and thought it and he were amazing. I’m not saying you can’t have an opinion but I would seriously watch it before completely dismissing him. I think it’s the best and most original comedy HBO’s ever made and certainly my favorite comedy since Arrested Development. The only drawback are the 2 episodes with Will Ferrell. Over him. But McBride shines, I just wish his film work would show it off more.
So maybe you should watch Eastbound and Down and make an educated decision? Nah, just keeping posting ignorance online. That’s what it’s for!
Um, how about you watch something he’s been in before you say ignorant/stupid things! He’s funny in everything that he’s in, was he not the best part of Land of the Lost, Pineapple Express…heck, he was the only funny thing in Drillbit Taylor!!!!
I personally want to see him in more movies, I can’t get enough of him.
@ThreeofFour and Pedro — trust me, I am making an educated comment. I’ve seen McBride in “Drillbit Taylor” and “Pineapple Express” and “Foot Fist Way” and “Heartbreak Kid.” I don’t need to watch “Eastbound and Down” to know he played the same character in each of the movies I just listed. And I don’t need to drink cat piss to know it tastes bad.
Pass. And good thing most of the industry is on vacation in August including me.
30 minutes or less? more like 30 dollars or less!
Ruh-roh! Future Razzie nominee.
How can a comedy trailer have zero laughs in it? Can’t anybody execute comedy anymore?
Caught a screening of this. It’s pretty funny, but not as solid conceptually as the individual portions are comedic. It’s kind of a bizarre follow-up for both the director and Eisenberg, and definitely feels like it might have originally been scripted for Seth Rogen. Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride and Nick Swardson are at the top of their game here, so it’s worth a look especially if you like their comedy.
I’m a working writer for a long time now. I make a fine living doing what I love and I will ALWAYS believe people have the right to write whatever they want — but that doesn’t always mean you should. This movie is based on a real incident where an innocent man had this done to him, he screamed and cried as the bomb squad ran away from him because they couldn’t diffuse the bomb and then he died when it went off. To add insult to injury the innocent victim wasn’t cleared for not being part of the plot until WAY after his death – dragging his name and his family’s name through the mud.
The creators of this film have every right to make it. I have every right to say maybe, just maybe, it is in bad taste. That being said, I know I’ll watch it one day – and I’m a hypocrite for doing so.
Hey Teeth, I was thinking the same damn thing. You stole my thoughts fully. Finding humor in this real-life incident is like finding humor in Bosnian rape/genocide or in the cheery antics of Level Three sex pedophiles. Just not worth the trouble, especially seeing as how the source of this flick is unspeakable tragedy.
If ’30 Minutes or Less’ goes on to gross $100 million I will walk down Wilshere in a pink banana Speedo and a purple wig, and hand out $100 bills to everyone.
I do feel bad for Ansari. When I read, in the decent ‘New Yorker’ profile of him, that this was his upcoming project I hoped for better.
When I heard the ‘Zombieland’ guys were involved I felt sanguine. Now, I’m like ‘WTF’ ? Bad choices all around. Everybody should get detention for this one.
I had no idea this film was based on a real tragedy. I simply cannot believe any studio would do this, turn an innocent person’s death into a comedic farce for the sake of profit. On second thought, I can. Does the dead man’s family know about this? I will not go see it and will urge others to boycott it as well.
If you really ARE a writer, you must be a reader as well. So I suggest you read the script, which can be found via Google, then tell me how this movie is in bad taste.
It’s only LOOSELY based off the actual events. Very, very loosely. And since you’re a writer, you’ll understand how this concept works, and appreciate the well-crafted characters/structure.
Yes, I REALLY AM a writer with an IMDB page as long as your leg. So I totally understand the desire and the high a writer gets when you have a great idea and you know you can NAIL it! REALLY NAIL IT! It’s a rush! But sometimes, and I’m just saying this for conversational purposes, you have to pull back from the creative excitement that is boiling inside you and say “I know I CAN write this, but SHOULD I write this?” I’ve been in that situation one or two times – situations where I know I can write a great story and I’m sure I would tell the story well – but then I realize people could be hurt by it, or it could perpetrate a negative stereotype or some other reason. It is quite rare, but sometimes this thought has occurred to me. On one occasion, a long time ago, I did it anyway. Not proud of it. Which I why I said in my prior post that there is something hypocritical about my thoughts on this film. But at the same time, the argument that this film is LOOSELY based on the real life tragic event is not really accurate and not really relevant – without reading the script, and by only seeing the trailer, i INASTANTLY knew that this was based on a a real life abduction and murder of an innocent man by would-be bank robbers. That’s all anyone would need to know. The fact that there is probably a bunch of jokes, a sidekick character and, most likely, a love-interest storyline that didn’t exist in real life is irrelevant and doesn’t take away from the fact that the family of the real life murder victim could be crushed by this movie being released. Once again, I support without debate the RIGHT of the creators to make this film. I was just wondering if it was the right thing to do – that’s all. I could be wrong.
Oh! It’s totally cool because it’s only “loosely” based. I think I’ll go write that comedy about planes crashing into the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building now.
not loosely enough. this would have maybe been a funny movie if they didnt have that element. there are a million other ways to do this. I cannot get the real incident out of my head either. DMcB or not (b/c i LOVE EB&D), this makes my skin crawl.
a) The guy was hardly innocent, it was later revealed that he was an accomplice in the plot. He got himself into his own mess.
b) This is loosely based on the actual events. The story has already provided inspiration for TV shows like Law and Order, Criminal Minds, and Bones, so why don’t you take up your unfounded complaints with them first.
I’ll take less. 90 minutes less in fact.
Trailer doesn’t work for me — but I’m not writing the movie off.
Here’s a promotional idea for SONY. Make a dozen or so raw scenes available for download on a website. Give users “30 minutes or less” for them to cut their own trailer of the movie an upload it somewhere. Winner of online vote gets $30,000.
That, or have Danny McBride say “cock” two more times.
LOVE this trailer. This looks really funny. Can’t wait.
Glad you liked your own trailer Mr. McBride.
THIS is what Reuben Fleischer decides to do after “Zombieland”? are you kidding? where’s the vision for his career?
i have a comedy idea… a wrongfully accused guy goes to prison and gets anally raped. BASED ON A TRUE STORY.
I felt the same way about Ruben Fleischer as most of you do about Danny McBride. I couldn’t agree with most of you more about DM, but Fleischer, I felt, was the emperor’s new clothes after ZOMBIELAND. It had a few smirk-worthy scenes and was otherwise a ‘who-the-f-cares’ generic amalgamation of ten equally uncool movies. But I guess you can fail upwards being a celebrated no-talent hack as long as you consistently deliver something at least mediocre (I’m looking in your direction Kevin Smith). Either way, I hope it’s hard for both Danny and Ruben to get work again after this thing.
WOW! That looks awful. The execution of the ‘bomb-in-a-school-joke’ could have been funny, but is botched here.
wow that was an underwhelming trailer.
I’m a huge fan of every single dude in the film (even Nick Swardson) and loved Pineapple Express.
I’m just not feeling this one based on the trailer. I realize that it’s often unfair to judge a movie based on it’s trailer, but that’s what we’re discussing in this thread – so there’s my opinion. Not feelin’ it.
But then I thought the Your Highness trailers smacked of genius, so what do I know?
So is mark zuckerberg robbing a bank now or what?? Cuz this kid is acting the exact same way he did in the facebook movie. It’s not acting, he’s playing himself.
“It’s not acting, he’s playing himself…”
Excuse me, but isn’t that what makes a movie star??? Gable, Eastwood, Wayne…
Robert Duvall said at a SAG foundation event that someone came up to him and accused him of playing himself in every movie.
Duvall’s response: Try it sometime. See how easy it is.
Get a clue! That’s what great acting is!
How is Nick Swardson getting film roles? As soon as I see this guy onscreen I’m annoyed. I figured he was just one of Sandlers little buddies and would never see him in anything else, but it looks as though he is spreading, like an unwanted rash. Why is this happening? He is not funny, he cannot act and he is not a looker. anyone have a thought?
also, the trailer looked pretty bad
I immediately thought of that real life pizza delivery man who died JUST A COUPLE YEARS AGO in this same way. I am all for pushing the envelope and being edgy, but this is classless, lame and in very poor taste.
Doesn’t anybody care about the poor soul of that guy who was victimized and murdered? They just turn his life into a comedy?
never heard of him and what better way to carry on his legacy with laughter…this shit looks FUNNY!!!
That actually hurt a little to watch. I pulled a muscle cringing.
When was the last time a comedy was funny???? Aurthor? nope Your Highness? Nope. Hall Pass? Nope. WTF?! MORE AND MORE CRAP getting made. Movies that a group of people (who are you?) thought was funny. and for the record, Danny McBride=Co-Star! Don’t forget that, Hollywood.
Wondering, I must agree. Comedies aren’t funny enough. But you what’s kinda funny? Your grammer ; )
You know what’s funnier, Teacher? You misspelled “grammar”.
Let’s hope, ‘Teacher’, that it was intentional irony, not a tragic mistep borne of your haste to be righteous, that made you put two grammar mistakes into your own lesson on grammar.
Pssst…you misspelled “grammar” and left out the “know” in “you know”. Jeebus! Even the word nazis are now part of the Idiocracy.
“But you what’s kinda funny? Your grammer ; )”
Speaking of funny, you misspelled “grammar”!
Unless you were talking about the dude who played Frazier.
Teacher, you misspelled “grammar” and forgot a word.
Teach,
It is always advisable to proof your OWN musings prior to posting lest you want to come off as “less than”.
As for the trailer, not funny. A note to his reps, Aziz Ansari needs an acting class. Schtick gets old rel fast. Good comedy occurs when the situation actually seems real and believable.
Teacher – It’s spelled GRAMMAR. Glad you’re not teaching MY kids…
Jesse might actually end up selling pizzas if he continues to sign on for movies like this. Bombs Away!
