Universal Pictures has released a Red Band trailer for the raunchy body-switching comedy The Change-Up, where Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman switch identities and have to deal with the ramifications. Scripted by The Hangover scribes Jon Lucas and Scott Moore and directed by Wedding Crashers helmer David Dobkin, the film opens August 5. I’m not a fan of body-switching comedies, but the trailer has its moments, and a particularly unglamorous one for the normally elegant Leslie Mann:

This is vile. Honestly it makes me sad for comedy.
And I’m not one of those bitter unemployed posters.
I’m a working screenwriter who thinks Lucas and Moore are talented and this is just way beneath them.
This is dreadful. The body switch thing has been done to death.
Awful – I want to flush this film down the toilet. I’m a Bateman fan and sometimes Reynolds fan, and this rehash of all the body switching films before it just looks terribly cliche – nothing new except for bad words. How many times have we seen this before? Really??? this is how you spend your time writing???
It’ll probably make mucho $ though.
This looks so dreadful.
what a waste of Jason Bateman.
and why does Ryan Reynolds come across as so feminine in this????
No way does he come across as gay!!
Not even enough funny for an snl skit.
What’s the idea, two reasonably good looking guys switch bodies? I think body switching is only funny if it’s more drastic ala All of Me.
Agree with all the posts above.
Let’s just put a board game and a fairytale princess in here and call it a day…
Just terrible.
And we are witnessing the middle and end of Ryan Reynolds as a leading man. He’s in Zach Braff territory now. Over before it even started.
Is this another Apatow masterpiece? I tell you the man deserves a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to film.
Lame How many “Freaky Friday” style movies do we need?
So, Freaky Friday with middle aged guys and lots of dick jokes. How creative.
You forgot about taint freckles joke.
I believe the next line was going to be, “Those aren’t freckles”.
Middle aged? Damn, you just made me feel really old. Ugh.
Oh lightning …. the secret sauce in all magical out of the bottle movies … “Same but different” that’s all Hollywood wants these days… Ugh
Yes, every damn one of you sound like failed screenwriters. But every other switching movie has been kids/family fare. At least this is a different direction.
David Dobkin,…thank you for not hiring me. You showed such promise with “Clay Pigeons”.
The ‘lightning causes the switch’ part? That’s not the hardest thing to buy. It’s that a sexed-up bachelor would ever envy the life of a married dad with two infants.
The phrase “I’m not a fan of body-switching comedies, but…” is really hilarious to me. Who is out there going “You know, I’m a pretty huge fan of body switching comedies!”
Funniest post I’ve read in a long time…LOL…
Yes screenwriters hate this but This movie could be the Dane cook of comedies…despised by it’s peers for lack of invention or originality but speaking to a larger audience. I think it looks not awful. And I’ll stop there.
Good luck with the taint joke landing outside of Hollywood or some urban gay districts. Oh love the humor myopia…
Really?? Completely disagree – I grew up in Michigan and I would think that the taint joke would work ONLY outside of hollywood and outside of “urban gay districts”…..
Holy mother was that painful to view. Jason Bateman, you’re a really good movie actor, what would possess you to pick this f-en lame bag of dog shit? Ryan Reynolds, is not every script in Hollywood calling for a hot guy in his early 30s piled up on your night stand? Come on brother, this could not have been funny on the page. I mean a body switching comedy that apparently occurs when you’re peeing in a magic fountain that’s struck by lightening? Really? Poop on the face jokes, dirty diapers smell jokes, hot chicks wanna fuck me jokes, woman taking a crap gags…(none of which the actors seemed to believe themselves would work by what we saw in this trailer.) Well, from the amount of shit jokes in this trailer (well over half the jokes seen) we can tell this is a steaming pile.
I wouldn’t even rent this.
My two favorite comedy actors…headlining a comedy film.
What could go wrong?
For me, “The Change-Up”(nice way to use a baseball term to appeal to regular guys) strikes out.
The trailer didn’t make me laugh, just feel icky…yea, that’s a technical term.
Body switching is a tired conceit, for sure. Too much mental gymnastics gets in the way of the funny. Not that I lack for the requisite skills of “willing suspension of disbelief”. After all, I’ve watched alleged comedies that featured Jennifer Aniston as the comedic lead-and THAT willing suspension stretched my grounds of disbelief to max.
Nonetheless, “The Change-Up” trailer made me feel peculiarly icky.
And I think I know why.
Nothing to do with the lame “jokes”, the cliche slapstick (woman on toilet-see ” Not Another Teen Movie” for the epic one), nor the leads, as Reynolds & Bateman are comedic winners.
No, my ickiness stems from the very premise: 90 minutes focusing on two guy’s bodies. Unfortunately, I’m heterosexual, and so the “joke” in the trailer about “freckles on my taint” or whatever just made me feel icky.
Bottom line: “The Change-Up” premise, based on the B.O. power of the two male leads, will appeal to gay men and women, enough to make it profitable. And may also luck out as a date movie, adding to B.O.
Now, if only they’d made “The Change-Up” as a comedy buddy film: Reynolds the single guy schemes to corrupt Bateman, the dull married guy. At the same time, Bateman schemes to corrupt Reynolds with the joys of married life. Now THAT comedic premise, also as overused as body-switching, at least wouldn’t have the “icky” factor, and given both of their comedic talents, would generate greater appeal to males 18-35.
Shut the fuck up
Love Olivia Wilde, very attractive and sexy. I wish she would go back to being a blonde (her natural hair colour). She was far better looking back in 2004 and 2005. At least, she finally dropped that horse’s ass husband of hers who can’t handle woman his own age. I’m glad that she’s finally playing the protagonist’s love interest in a movie for once and hope that she does it more often from now on.
Yeah, that was awful.
Perhaps they didn’t want to show the funny bits in the trailer? I kept waiting for this to take a turn into something, anything, but it just kept grinding on. For all of that, it’s got that smutty, sexual innuendo vibe that will probably serve it well…for all the 13 year old boys that manage to sneak in to see it.
What was Olivia Wilde thinking when she signed on for this garbage and Leslie Mann? This is Freaky Friday except way more pathetic. This trailer was painful to watch.
Nothing wrong with “trading places” if the film is aimed at a younger audience. Clearly this is an R rated comedy with a children’s movie twist. Might not pan out at the box office.
You guys are hating on something that is a winner. No doubt. Very funny…
This movie has more laughs in its trailer than most comedies have in an entire movie. It will kill. Period.
