Warner Bros teased four minutes of Green Lantern footage at WonderCon. The film’s visual effects are still being honed by director Martin Campbell, but this looks pretty interesting. The 3D film opens June 17 with Ryan Reynolds starring.

Much better than the trailer. The off world stuff is great. Very Star Wars and I can see that selling tons of toys to kids. But then comes the second half on Earth, and it looks like cheesy crap. The worst parts of the Incredible Hulk basically. And I liked Incredible Hulk, but the world’s audience didn’t agree with me, since it flopped.
I’m growing a trifle concerned about the DC film universe. Green Lantern could be a gigantic success or it could be a super flop. I don’t see much middle room for it. Superman gives me a sinking feeling. Cavill is a charmer, but miscast. And Zack Snyder? Enough said.
My kids have no interest in the Green Lantern whatsoever, mainly because they’ve never heard of him, so I doubt the toys will sell. Actual question: What’s a lantern, Dad?
It is your job to teach your children who Green Lantern is. Plus, all of the fangirls and fanboys who grew up with Superfriends will make this a surefire hit. Not to mention fans of The Blackest Night… Don’t Hate!
)
OMG! I completely forget to teach my kids who the Green Lantern is! I’m so embarrassed! I completely got caught up in trying to teach them to be good human beings and to appreciate art, music and literature!
At least we know where your kids will learn about narrow-mindedness.
But teaching them about Green Lantern would have helped teach them how to be good human beings and to appreciate art, music and literature!
You have failed your children and the Lantern!!!
When I first saw the costume (EW cover) I was all “Eww.”
The first trailer was interesting in a kiddie pic kind of pic.
But this…
I’M SOLD!!!
The first trailer did not take the characters seriously like the horrible Fantastic 4 movies. YUK!!! Fan boys are serious about this not a joke. I’m glad they recovered. NO MORE STUPID SHIT LIKE “HEY LOOK AT MY GREEN OUTFIT”. Geoff Johns needs to monitor these properties better and not let dumb shit get out. I’m cool with this trailer. If DC wants to catch up to Marvel please take your characters serious. NO MORE JOKEY HOKEY SHITI!!!!
EPIC! But I’d like to see a character-driven trailer next time!
Sorry, that’s way too geeky for the masses. I see Watchmen deja vu. Big opening weekend, forgotten by next week.
nobody saw watchmen after opening weekend because it wasn’t very good, not because it was too geeky. Positive word of mouth from all those who saw it opening weekend would have propelled it into success. like any film, Green Lantern’s performance will depend on its viewers reactions.
otherwise, it has everything in place to make it an enormous success. how is Martin Campbell + Blake Lively + Ryan Reynolds + all the other big names in this not mainstream??
Watchmen failed because of it wasn’t a happy super hero story with the usual superhero bits. No happy ending, bleak throughout, no stars, and a blue penis.
It was an extremely well done adaptation.
Agree. It was a cynical take on the nature of being heroes. When I first heard that they were making it, I was surprised because, although I thought the graphic novel was brilliant, I could not imagine mass audiences loving it. The movie was great.
Watchman may have been a good adaptation, but it wasn’t a very good movie. Maybe the reason it didn’t do well was because it doesn’t hold up well as a standalone movie. I’ve never read the comic, and thought the movie was, well, a little too weird.
LOL forget how media saavy Ryan Reynolds is and remember that he’s yet to open a single major movie on his own. It was even a joke for a funnyordie.com promo for “The Proposal” with Sandra Bullock taunting him, “Who is Ryan Reynolds? Who is he?”
“Green Lantern” will open on the strength of the peculiar obligation of a certain segment of the American population to see a superhero movie on the opening weekend, and it will die a quick death afterwards, maybe a $60 million weekend and $120-$130 cum.
not saying RR opens films on his own. I’m saying that with the aforementioned combination, there is no way you can compare GL’s lack of mass appeal to Watchmen. That movie had, what, 7 or 8 D-listers for the cast? Plus, Reynolds is gaining popularity and press having won that silly sexiest man of the year award and whatnot.
“Won”?! LOL What? It’s a Time-WARNER magazine that appoints whoever Warner needs to pimp. Nobody votes on the title! OMG, did you think it was voted on?!? It’s not an award. LOL. What? What? This isn’t a super secret.
um, let me rephrase… they awarded him the silly title of sexiest man of the year. no, I do not think the title is voted on. I didn’t say that his popularity was reflected by having been awarded sexiest man, rather I said that his popularity has grown as a result. I know it’s a Time-WARNER magazine, but regardless it is read by millions. Just because people know the same people are pimping him and the Green Lantern movie (by the way, the average reader probably has no idea that the two are related) doesn’t mean it doesn’t propel his image.
Agreed, it’s the most expensive SciFi Original movie ever.
They may buy an opening but the masses won’t fall for this convoluted mess or Thor or Captain America.
Hey, Hey, let’s leave Cap (and Thor) out of this. The Cap movie looks amazin’, and its is the simplest and less “convoluted” out of the three.
Actually Cap n’ America and Thor look like horse shit… Thor will be a mega-bomb here in America. Overseas they’ll watch anything… but it won’t earn enough to make a sequel.
The lead guy will be making Fast and Furious 14 in a few years…
I think the fears of a Watchmen-like box office are misplaced. Watchmen “failed” because WB wanted a comic book movie and pulled Watchmen out of a hat thinking critical plaudits would translate into ticket sales. Their ignorance of the source material led them to faithfully adapt a highly esoteric story to sell to the broadest possible mainstream audience.
GL is obscure certainly, but no less so than Iron Man was in 2008. GL also isn’t, in the main, a metaphysical meditation on human nature, authority and individual rights. Green Lantern is flying super cops. in space. Not to say that the stories don’t get deeper but I predict a 500 percent increase in the number of giant green fists smashing into things over Watchmen (and the Hulk for that matter) and thousands of irate parents desperately trying to track down Green Lantern costumes around the second week in October.
I guess you’d have to be a fan of the comic book to want to see a movie with such bad special effects.
You must know nothing about films. First off the trailer is latent with VISUAL Effects, not special effects. And if you think they look terrible, Im not sure what movies you think they look good in, because they are pretty high quality by any standard. Also… if you didnt read the article before the trailer “The Visual Effects are still being HONED BY THE DIRECTOR”. I guess you dont that that means this ISNT A FINAL PRODUCT.
Get your head out of your ass.
Looking good. As for the haters, c’mon, boys, get a life. It is quite pathetic that you can only contribute to the world your petty hatreds about fanboy movies. Very, very small people out there, passing sadly through life with they bitterness, envy and hatred.
wow, so you worked on it? all that vitriol you’re saying other spew, back on you times two.
There’s no shot here that isn’t CG special effects. We used to call that a cartoon.
I`m sorry….this looks pretty cheesy !!! Are you kidding, after all the huff and puff this is the best they could come up with ???!
MUCH better than the first trailer. It’ll be interesting to see if they use a modified version of this for the trailer they’re putting up with Thor.
It’s funny to see how many people are just rooting for this movie to fail. I say give Martin Campbell a chance. He’s got a great track record launching/re-launching properties (Zorro/Bond).
That was some of the worst CGI I’ve ever seen in a big budget film.
When it started playing I started hoping it was a trailer for the video game.
Horrible. It looked like a bad 80s movie. They said they were still tweaking the VFX…I hope that means they are replacing them with actually good fx. This is the problem with CGI movies these days. They don’t know how to incorporate the FX subtly and organically and how to use a combination of physical fx with computer imagery. They rely soley on computers and it looks terrible. Learn from movies like District 9…not from movies like GI Joe.
The special effects look incredible. Fumble recovered from the first trailer.
I don’t understand how no one sees how bad this looks? The CGI looks straight out of a video game cutscene, the dialogue is delivered so poorly, and the plot just looks plain ridiculous in film form.
How is anyone excited for this????
Because it looks good.
I agree- looks very bad….bad visual effects, horrific acting- super bomb- I’ll call it now
I enjoy Ryan Reynolds but this looks god awful.. What was he thinking making a movie that appeals to only 15 year old boys…. Pass
This looks cheap to me…and it seems like they’ve had a lot of time as opposed to the other superhero films coming out–but those look…of better quality.
Some input from Europe… Warner Bros.’ local arms will certainly bang the drum all they can, but the property does not enjoy any great recognition, the cast will not pull in an audience and the extra ticket cost for 3D will not win the film any friends either. Also, and this could be just me, after the gag-reflex and migraine inducing Green Hornet, I wonder how many potential viewers will even read past the first word of the title.
EPIC! And a surefire Four Quadrant monster at the box office. The haters and bitter losers here can whine all they want, but you should know by now that you just don’t bet against Martin Campbell + WB Marketing + Ryan Reynolds + Star Wars vibe + Amazing CGI… The social networks are eating this up, and that’s how you create the buzz that makes BO winners!
Kids will eat up the cool aliens, guys will dig the space action and Blake Lively, the ladies will swoon for Ryan Reynolds in a tight spacesuit. And the haters? They will be at the front of the row cheering and telling everyone how they “knew” this movie would be great (lol); it never fails!
Beware My Power — GREEN LANTERN’S LIGHT!
Alex would like it to be made known that he or she is not an employee or associate of Warner Bros. or any of their affiliated companies and/or agencies, that he or she has no connection with this film in any capacity whatsoever and has made the above comment of his or her own free will for no recompense or remuneration whatsoever. Isn’t that right, Alex?
Indeed that is right; I’m as far from Hollywood showbiz as you are from intelligence. Not sure why you care where I work, clearly anyone who like this movie is a troll in your eyes. Must suck to be you, my friend!
BEWARE MY POWER, LOSERS –GREEN LANTERN’S LIGHT!!!
My $10 against yours says you’re so wrong.
For someone who isn’t a paid flack, you sure give great flack! You’re free to give your money to Warner Bros. and I hope you enjoy the film. From someone who is a film business professional (that’s me, by the way), fans and drum bangers are important but the fanboy audience is fringe stuff: it’s the great, and often unwashed, masses who have to turn out, especially for a film of this scale, budget and effort. Your equation of “Martin Campbell + WB Marketing + Ryan Reynolds + Star Wars vibe + Amazing CGI” lacks not only knowledge (“Star Wars vibe”? Really? If anyone’s feeling a disturbance in the Force over this film it’s you. Maybe it was the chili) but also a solution. I would suggest “= expensive bath”.
Do you have a Green Lantern outfit at home? Do you dress up and run around, fighting evil, fingering your ring and saying Green Lantern stuff? You do, don’t you, Alex?
You’re a “business professional” in Hollywood? BWAHAHAHAHAHAH Is that what McDonald’s waiters are calling themselves nowadays?
What’s the matter, did WB execs laugh at you when you auditioned for an alien character in Green Lantern? Or maybe Ryan Reynolds didn’t wink at you after you waited for hours and hours to get an autograph. It really sucks to be you.
What.a.loser.
The checks in the mail (LOL)…
It would be kind of nice if they put one-tenth the work into the scripts that they put into the design elements of these things. This must be why Lords of the Rings was such a rare treat; Tolkien had already done all the heavy lifting in that regard.
And why do they continue to think that all superheroes are interchangeable? (Part of why so many of these movies suck, actually.) Reynolds was earlier supposed to be The Flash, a wisenheimer character which would have fit him to a T. The extremely stiff necked Hal Jordan, not so much.
ummm… have you ever read a Green Lantern comic? Hal Jordan is anything but stiff-necked. He’s completely cocky and full of himself, and a weisenheimer to boot!
Unless they’ve radically changed Jordan’s character (which is possible), he was also the most stiff-necked and whitebread of DC’s generally whitebread characters. That’s why he has long been teamed up with political radical Green Arrow, for contrast. There are other Green Lanterns who aren’t like that, but Jordan is definitely an old fashioned Randolph Scott sort of guy. Timothy Oliphant would be a lot more in the ballpark than Reynolds.
How do you know they didn’t put a lot of effort in the script? YOU DON’T KNOW, but of course that won’t stop whiners like you from criticizing a movie they haven’t seen yet.
Looks intense. Probably the only comic-based movie I’m going to see in the theatre this summer.
OK. Maybe it won’t suck.
Epic, as in epic failure. This may be the biggest bomb of the year, bigger than MARS NEEDS MOMS. Who is going to see this?
It looks like a video game, “your mask will appear when you need to hide your identity” is laughable – oooooh, I can’t tell it’s Ryan Reynolds with the mask, and Reynolds is proving once again he’s a horrible actor.
I didn’t think AVATAR was the greatest film, but you gotta give Cameron credit for creating a believable alien world. This looks ridiculous.
This is going to be BATTLEFIELD EARTH bad; HOWARD THE DUCK bad. GREEN LANTERN is going to lose the studio so much money. It’s going to be epic.
Why Peter Sarsgaard, why? You’re a good actor dude. Did you really need this paycheck.
I haven’t seen SUCKER PUNCH yet, nor do I plan to anytime soon, but at least that movie had hot chicks dressed hot. What does this movie have?
I mean like seriously, everyone who was involved with the GREENlighting of this film should be canned immediately.
I can’t wait to see this open under $10 million, it’s going to be an epic failure.
OK so far no one’s talked about Ryan Reynolds. I’d like to ask what makes him Super Hero material? To me, his close-set eyes set the wrong tone; they make the viewer think this is a huge spoof. One look at those eyes, and I expect a gag to make me laugh, like a Saturday Night skit (always tries–but never succeeds at.)
You may not realize it, but someone with wider-set eyes would have added weightiness and bravado to the character, rather than (unpurposeful) goofiness.
Oh dear. Have you been playing with the tin foil again?
Martin Campbell. This is why I have faith this could be good. That, and the source material is quite strong, if used properly. The cosmic nature of this particular super hero, in that there is a Green Lantern on every planet and they sometimes team up as an army to face huge threats… it’s unique in the realm of super hero films. Where I’m more worried, as someone mentioned above, is in the earth-bound storyline where he appears to fight Peter Sarsgaard’s mutated villain. That is where this has the potential to be more run-of-the-mill.
Not to be a geek, but it is not every planet. There are something like 3600 or now 7200 Green Lanterns chosen from a planet located in 3600 sectors of the universe. Otherwise, you are right, the source material is very good. They have far more interesting material to work with than say Iron Man. I agree that the earth-bound element is not as interesting as the eventual war of lights that turns this into a dire space opera.
Is movie footage suppose to make you cringe? Who cares about the Visual FX. The problem here that they made Green Lantern a comedy. WHY IS GREEN LANTERN A COMEDY?
I’m surprised by the number of negative comments on the trailer. I actually liked it. I haven’t read Green Lantern in decades but this trailer’s actually got me excited to see the movie.
yikes
Would an acting coach for Ryan Reynolds been too much to ask for?
Nobody needs an acting coach to play a superhero, you can be batman or spiderman right now if you’re hot enough.
CGI looks terrible, but at least they’re working on it.
No matter how bad it looks so far, this will be a success in the box office. The high-schoolers will flock and so will the the comic freaks.
I hate to admit it, but Ms. Lively will be one of the reasons why I go see this. Good job WB.
