The Lee Tamahori-directed drama The Devil’s Double has a new trailer. It was one of the most buzzed about films at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, where it was acquired by Lionsgate. Dominic Cooper plays Saddam Hussein’s brutal son Uday, as well as the man pressed to be his lookalike. Cooper has jumped from the film to get a role in Fox’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and was on a short list of actors who tested for the lead in The Bourne Legacy. Here is the trailer:

This trailer makes the movie look like it could be from the same people who brought you Medellin. Dominic Cooper is talented, but I think this was above his ability and that accent is horrible
Read the script. There’s no way this movie will be bad.
Dominic’s performance is outstanding in this film.
I’ve been looking forward to seeing what this actor could do since ‘The History Boys’, where, in a very good cast, he still stood out as the guy to watch.
Already seen this movie. Dominic Cooper has the best performance of the year so far. Extremely entertaining but ultra violent.
As an industry person but generally smart person, I want to say thank you for anyone who made or financed this. Whether this is good or not, it’s a great subject for a film, and just because The Hurt Locker or Rendition don’t do well, it doesn’t mean anything Middle East shouldn’t get made. This looks fun, if anything, and I hope this gets marketed to Black and Latino audiences, because it’s got this Scarface aspect to it, or it’s a violent, gangster type deal. It’s the kind of movie I *would* pay for, even though I gravitate to more serious fare. We just want to see more diverse stories, and I’m not talking ethnicity. I just mean, if you’re going to do a romcom, make it a good one, not like these terrible ones that get made and yes, do make money. But at least this is something different.
And it has a LIMITLESS feel to it, in that audiences want to get taken on a ride. They want to be Bradley Cooper, to become better versions of themselves, and to then go into a new world with a life that they’d rather have instead of their own.
Friends of Deadline Hollywood, gather around….
This post above by “dl” says it all, why we’re lost as a nation, people, culture.
If this was sarcastic parody, I tip my hat.
If this comment is genuine, Dec 12, 2012, can’t come soon enough!
Based on this trailer, “The Devil’s Double” is simply an excuse to market brutality, violence, gangster idiocy, to males 18-50.
There is not a single socially redeeming feature to this film.
Lionsgate should be ashamed-then again, Hollywood has no shame.
“dl” says it best with unreserved glee: “This looks fun, if anything, and I hope this gets marketed to Black and Latino audiences, because it’s got this Scarface aspect to it, or it’s a violent, gangster type deal.”
“Fun”!??
Market it to “Black and Latino audiences”?
Are you fucking crazy?
Killing, shooting, sluts on the prowl, torture, sinister sociopaths, living the high life from literally blood money…what’s not to like?
“dl” again: “It’s the kind of movie I *would* pay for, even though I gravitate to more serious fare.”
What, you fool, this shithole trailer isn’t “serious” enough for you? Maybe “Hostel” or “Saw” is more to your “serious fare” liking.
Make no mistake: “The Devil’s Double” marketing hook is how much abhorrent violence can we cram into 90 minutes. That’s it.
Then again, maybe I’m missing the more subtle cinematic value of seeing the lifestyle of a crazed sociopathic killer.
Thankfully, “dl” explains the finer point of this movie’s hidden attraction:
“And it has a LIMITLESS feel to it, in that audiences want to get taken on a ride. They want to be Bradley Cooper, to become better versions of themselves, and to then go into a new world with a life that they’d rather have instead of their own.”
Fuck me, I didn’t get “taken for a ride” by this video-game like barrage of violence vomited on us by this trailer for “The Devil’s Double”.
Nor did I watch this violent orgy trailer and “go into a new world with a life (sociopathic killer) that I’d rather have instead of my own.”
People, if “dl’s” ignorant praise of gangster/murderer/greed movies represents the majority of males 18-50, Lionsgate and its investors will win, and our society will lose big-time.
“Scarface” was an equally violent piece of shit, too, without a SINGLE redeeming social value, marketed the same way: Gross violence, a captivating sociopathic killer, babes, booze, guns, torture, all promoted to 18-50 boys and their lust for blood.
Hollywood continues to excrete these vile films and sell them to the “dl’s” of the world.
No wonder we’re the world’s most violent society!
Looks great. The filmmakers went for something different. Good for them and I hope it does well.
This film looks interesting, and it’s nice to see Hollywood acknowledging what heinous, insanely horrible people Saddam and his sons were. Though, I wonder if the film will also depict how Saddam’s sons used to abduct young virgin girls from schools, rape them, and then feed them to lions that they kept under their palace? Because if that is shown graphically, I’m not sure I could watch this…
Of all the ‘rich-poor switcheroo” movies EVER MADE in the history of film, this is gonna be on the top of that list! Dominic C. has it all going on too
This is one of those films that will most likely be entertaining as long as you leave any comparison between Dominic Cooper and the real Uday Hussein at the door. For starters, Uday was a fearsome creature, standing 6 feet 6 inches. Dominic is not quite the menace at 5’9 1/2″.
I read the script and had high hopes for this one, but this trailer suggests otherwise. Clearly they are hoping to attract the Scarface poster owning audience. I saw the 60 minutes piece on this story and Cooper may look the part but he sure doesn’t sound it.
oh come on it was SO NOT one of the most buzzed about films at Sundance. That is pure BS. All anyone talked about was How to Die in Oregon, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Another Earth and Buck
Oh yeah Buck was a huge buzz title. Sold to IFC Sundance Selects for seven figures with a big theatrical commitment.
Gotta say it looks pretty darn good. Might be the new scarface. And Ludvine Sagnier doesn’t hurt things. I’m in.
saw the film at Sundance, it’s awesome, if people see it Cooper will win the Oscar, plays both characters so beautifully. also Ludivine Sagnier is amazing in it.
