Kathleen Turner didn’t fare so well on Broadway this week when the addiction play High announced it would close days after its opening. She’s got another project premiering at the film festival further downtown. In The Perfect Family, Turner stars as a meddling matriarch and devout Catholic whose nomination for a church award makes her more determined to rein in her husband and two grown children into her image of what the perfect family should look like. The film also stars Emily Deschanel, Jason Ritter, Richard Chamberlain, Sharon Lawrence, Elizabeth Pena and Michael McGrady. Anne Renton makes her feature directing debut on a script written by Claire V. Riley and Paula Goldberg. The film gets its debut screening April 24. Here is a scene from the film that is exclusive to Deadline:

Hurray, another Hollywood film that portrays religion or religious individuals (especially Christians or Catholics) as crazy. Just the movie I want to see!
I’m Catholic, and believe me, I’ve met some nutty fucking people growing up in the church… this film probably isn’t far from the truth. Unfortunately a lot of people give religion a bad name… go watch the film Jesus Camp.
Oh come on! Hollywood movies portray every shape n’ variety of person as crazy — crazy characters make for good drama/comedy! Every romantic comedy I can think of has the crazy friend or relative, and they’re not portrayed as religious. Same can be said for lots of drama movies, too — don’t be such a victim. Makes you seem… well, paranoid. Ergo, crazy.
You’re not doing yourself any favors.
I had to laugh… the writers must’ve been flies on the wall in my house when I was a kid. The dinner table conversation often went this way. As uncomfortable as this scene is, I’m still interested in seeing where the story goes. I suspect this cast did a great job.
Who’s crazy in this scene? I saw an American family w/ an interesting conflict being discussed. The exchange makes me want to explore this family further & find out how/if they’re going to resolve their issues.
Stop being so defensive!
As an atheist, I actually sometimes get annoyed at how often religious themes seep into films and television. I don’t mind it if it’s called for, but I can’t recall the last time an atheist wasn’t portrayed as broken and bitter. Neither of which describe me.
That’s funny, because you sound a bit bitter in your post. Just sayin’.
Christians have the right to get pissed when a film suggests their “religion” as the culprit of dysfunction. But this trailer looks like they put the lens on the people, not necessarily the God they worship.
I’m so happy to see one of my favorite actresses back in movies.
It feels like she doesn’t even know her lines in this film. The editor is doing everything he/she can to cut away from her acting. Looks horrible.
My God! Looks like a real movie for adult audience. Wonder how it got made.
Word!
Hey, I know you!
Who cares about being happy?!
Definitely a Catholic mentality at play!
Hope that’s not a final edit of the scene — poor rhythm and more CUs of the boy than mom.
The script for this movie was found on InkTip.
Indeed. Congratulations, Anne!
Wow…. who picked THIS scene?
Believe it or not, The Virgin Suicides covered this same subject matter very well. IMHO an underrated movie.
Nothing worse than typing “ÏMHO”. It’s your opinion, right, so don’t downgrade it. Why is your opinion “humble”? Say it, and mean it.
That’s not really a trailer. It’s more like a clip.
Hey look! It has Emily Deschanel in it! She’s so cute and pregnant now! Cant wait to see that movie
D ??
Is this movie out to buy/ rent?? Loks great
All churches are struggling with sex outside of marriage and gay marrige. But people who just hate the Catholic Church or Christianity itself must be patient a little longer. European and American christians have swallowed so manyl birth control pills and aborted so many children they have fallen way below replacement. Good bye Pope hello Mullah . The Vatican will eventually be turned into a mosque. No kidding.
