20th Century Fox has issued a more expansive trailer for the overseas marketplace on X-Men: First Class, the latest installment of the mutant franchise. Watching this makes me wonder, is there any other superhero franchise with as rich a mythology and deep pool of core characters that lends itself to spinoff films that seem fresh and not derivative? The film will be released June 3.

I’m looking forward to this.
Yay, bad effects again! Fox really knows how to blow their money on this crap…
This movie looks spectacular! I can’t wait to see it in theatres.
@Sweetpie That is because you suck.
Can’t wait for this!
The next installment will investigate how Prof. X lost his Scottish accent as he grew older.
Fantastic trailer full of interesting moments but it looks like this movie is VERY wrapped up in the Charles vs. Erik story so I’m not exoecting much from the minor characters–this is the ultimate “friendship gone sour” comic book saga.
That’s an astute comment, Mike. A Superman movie is just another Superman movie. But films in the X-Men franchise can go in any number of interesting directions.
The other benefit is that the world of X-Men is actually about something — prejudice against minorities — as opposed to, say, the pseudo-camp of Spider-Man or the nihilism of Batman.
I hope they do it right (X2 as opposed to X3).
I haven’t liked anything on this until now. This looks better than what we’ve seen before but i have low expectations for this one.
I am in the same boat as you. This is the first thing I have liked. I think its going to be terrible. I have a feeling all 4 superhero films are going to underperform this summer. Thor might live up to expectations, and coincidentally has a much smaller central geek fanbase then the other 3. I am positive Captain America and Green Lantern are going to be terrible. X-men lost my confidence a long time ago
After the horribleness that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine, I have very little faith in the X-Men franchise.
Yes, please.
[is there any other superhero franchise with as rich a mythology and deep pool of core characters that lends itself to spinoff films that seem fresh and not derivative? ]
If they hadn’t messed it up, the FANTASTIC FOUR would- during Kirby’s run, that book introduced characters ranging from the Black Panther to the Inhumans, and helped cross-promote then-struggling series like the Hulk(who was originally cancelled after six issues!) and Spiderman (whose first issue featured the FF splashed all over the cover, followed up by an ongoing subplot about the friendly rivalry between Spidey and the Torch).
I would say that the only reason this franchise feels less derivative than, say the DC roster, is because most of us have no idea who some of these lesser characters are.. and really couldn’t care less!
Summer 2013
APACHE CHIEF: GIANT NATIVE AMERICAN DUDE
“INIKCHUK!
They should have included Harry Leland, Donald Pierce, Tessa and Selene.
Best of the X-trailers I’ve seen. In fact it might be the best of the superhero film trailers I’ve seen thus far. Makes me wonder if ‘First Class’ might not be the sleeper of this lot.
Will see if the reviews are good.
It looks well executed. I give Matthew Vaughn that credit. I think the subject matter looks boring though. It’s like “The Social Network” with superpowers. A lot of these themes were already covered in “X2.” This is just another attempt by Fox to keep the rights to this Marvel property. Stay tuned for “X Men Origins: Wolverine The College Years.” Next summer.
One of the worst campaigns I’ve seen since The Retin-A-Team (and par for the Rothman/Sella course). Boring teaser one-sheet, incredibly sloppy character posters and this is just the teaser trailer with a few more lame VFX and some additional, meaningless dialogue. Yup, it’s from 20th Century-Flops!
Not typically a fan of films like this, but trailer is amazing! Will def check it out…
Shockingly it looks good. But that shot with The Beast in a plane is comical.
Lame, I don’t buy the whole JFK voiceover playing over the mutants interacting with each other. Just seems wierd. Like two things that don’t really mesh.
Mystique was never an X-Man, right? I don’t like this revisionist history b.s.
Aside from that, I’m still not feeling this movie and the trailers are flatly cut, but I AM feeling January Jones in that corset. Holy god, Daddy likes.
Mystique was an X-men in the 90s and the early part of the 2000s. Look it up.
@akaison
The point is Mystique was not one of the original members of the X-Men and neither was Banshee or Havoc and all of them are featured as the “First Class” of X-Men. In addition to the above mentioned “revisions” we have Magneto who was not one of the orginal X-Men! The rift between Xavier and Magneto occured before the X-Men was formed.
In my opinion Bryan Singer has totally messed up the X-Men movie franchise. They should put out a disclaimer from the “Watcher” stating this is an alternate universe…nuff said
The Original First Class according to the comics are as follows
Marvel Girl
Cyclops
Beast
Iceman
Angel
The Mimic joined in issue 19.
Avengers, but we won’t know until it comes out.
The story, as suggested by this extended trailer, seems both textured and rich. If the execution does not fall down this could be a pleasant surprise (and box office winner) for the super hero genre. Count me in. I doff my hat to the screenwriters and special effects folks. ‘X-Men: First Class’ will probably finish second to Captain America in Box Office but should be ahead, by a nudge, of Green Lantern Just my two Abe Lincolns.
I love X-Men, I’ve been reading X-Men comics for over 20 years, but this trailer couldn’t even hold my attention. Who are all these new characters? Why do they have to keep messing w/ the comic continuity?
Not looking good for Fox. I see this being another Knight & Day for them, X-Men vs the Cuban missile crisis, yeah, like that’s not going to be hard to market.
