Burbank, CA (Wednesday, April 13, 2011) – Building on its most expansive programming slate ever, ABC Family has picked up an additional one-hour scripted drama, “Jane By Design.” The drama is in addition to the network’s four previously announced series pick-ups set to launch this summer, the one-hour dramas “The Nine Lives of Chloe King,” “Switched at Birth” and “The Lying Game,” and the half-hour multi-cam comedy series, “State of Georgia” (formerly “The Great State of Georgia”). “Jane By Design” is set to premiere in early 2012.
“Jane By Design” (formerly “What Would Jane Do”), a light-hearted drama, follows Jane, a teenager who lands a job at a hip retail company when they mistake her for an adult. New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

This has a similar plot to a Christina Applegate film from 20 years ago called “Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead”.
Mom is out of town Christina scams a fashion industry job to support the family after said title incident.
Mildly amusing if I recall
“Jane” sounds like “Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead”
Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, anyone?
Ha, looks like the first three commenters beat me to it! Great mind think alike, eh?
Great minds? Try unoriginal and naive to find the find the smallest connection between an old story and call it a copy cat.
I was actually hoping someone wouldn’t be dumb enough to bring that movie up but that was hoping for too much.
Even more recent is a show on Nick starring Keke Palmer – True Jackson, VP. Young Girl scores a job at a fashion design house while still in high school. Guess there are no original ideas anymore.
Ha! The first thing I thought of was “Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” as well. Will Jane have a stoner brother who begins to idolize Ina Garten?
Sounds exactly like True Jackson VP on Nickelodeon even some of the name are the same.
It sounds like Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitters dead! I connected announced project to previous film or television show. I get the cookie now! Come on Movie Idea Police, give me my reward for connecting similar plot lines!
God, it’s getting so old. Everything is going to have similar elements to something else. Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitters dead didn’t invent these ideas.
Also, I read the script and it was good. I’m not a teenage girl so wouldn’t watch it but I love that it was set in Philly and used Philadelphia-based Urban Outfitters.
Doesn’t Nick already have this show on? True Jackson VP?
Does anyone else have something new to say? Yes you are all brilliant!! JEEZ that movie was 20 years ago, and it was a MOVIE not a tv series and was pretty darn popular! How old are all of u?? What about Devil Wears Prada, or Ugly Betty With the secret life element. Ummm as far as “original” tv, how many CSI shows are there now all running at the same time?? How about Law and Order???? Not to mention all the medical dramas, and talent search American Idol replicas. Come On! Its family-teen tv!! If a 20 year old movie is the best comparison, this show is totally new in tv land! LOL Watch HBO or Showtime originals or PBS for something different (which is still not all so completely origina). Why the heck are u bothering with news about an ABC Family show??
It has great writers and a kick-ass producer and if the worst thing is it reminds people of a 20 year old movie everyone apparently still remembers sounds like a hot to me!
I was thinking more devils wears prada thanks babsitter movie. I think it sounds interesting and maybe inspired a hs person to be productive.
If it is unoriginal and naive to make the connection to “Babysitter”, isn’t it equally unoriginal to criticize those who did make the connection? What’s original about that?
“I’m right on top of that, Rose!” “The dishes are done, man.” I could go on and on….
Arrested Development–fantastic series!–had teenage character Maeby (Portia de Rossi’s daughter) as a high school student who gets a job as a film studio executive. Nobody in the family or at her work knows!!!
Who cares if the story line reminds you of a movie that was made 20 years ago. This is a drama series about a young girl and her struggles to juggle two worlds while pursuing her dream. Unfortunately the dream offer comes before she finishes High School. There will be many story lines and plots each week ….and it sounds like ABC has landed a great cast. I’m looking forward to watching.
Anyone know when it will premiere?
I’ve known Erica since she was born, looking forward to seeing her new show, very talented young lady. Good for you ABC!
Just stop, it’s a TV series. If you’re gonna bitch about it, than don’t watch it. I think it sounds cool regardless of it’s “unoriginal content.” It’s a new cast: new faces, new personalities, so on and so forth. Besides, there are much worse TV series you could all go complain about.
I’M just gonna watch it because i LOVE ONLY 2
Well actually it is very similar to the CURRENT Nick show “True Jackson V.” The only difference is she’s white. Sooooo its not original. I doubt it would be any good because it basically the white remake of a black show.
Yes, the first thing I thought when I saw the trailer was True Jackson VP. The only difference is that that show is ridiculous, with bad writing and horrible overacting. Jane by Design is at least a good show: Good acting, good directing. I don’t care if the idea isn’t original, at least ABC Family did it right :/
When does jane by design series start again
LOVE the New show, Jane by Design, sure hope this stays on,it is quite Refreshing compared to some of the Really stupid shows that don’t even need to be Aired at all.
