EXCLUSIVE: HBO Films has optioned the rights to Ann Hood’s bestselling novel The Knitting Circle as a starring vehicle for Katherine Heigl. In her first TV project since leaving ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and her first collaboration with HBO, Heigl will also produce the movie with her mother and producing partner Nancy Heigl through their Abishag banner, along with Pine Street Pictures. Dirty Sexy Money creator and award-wining playwright Craig Wright will write the adaptation. This marks Wright’s return to HBO, where he started his TV writing career on Six Feet Under, a gig that earned him Emmy and WGA nominations.
Heigl is se
t to play the central character in Hood’s semiautobiographical novel, a mother mourning the death of her young daughter and struggling to overcome the grief that jeopardizes every aspect of her life, including her marriage. She begins to find her way back into the world through a knitting circle and the stories its members share. Paradigm-repped Heigl will next be seen in New Line’s New Year’s Eve, slated for a Dec. 9 release, and in Lakeshore/Lionsgate’s One For The Money, which will come out next January. WME-repped Wright recently landed a pilot order at MTV for coming-of-age comedy Underemployed.

pleaaase noooo more katherine heigle
Katherine Heigl is amazingly gorgeous. This voluptuous young woman is indescribably beautiful.
and your point is ? She can’t act
Anyone else think that Heigl could reboot her career if she was surgically detached from her agent/mother?
She has an Emmy and two Golden Globe noms and is actually very a good actress. If you had said she has been in some bad movies – that would have been fair. But saying “she can’t act” – well that is your opinion perhaps, but it is ridiculous.
which just shows how little taste either organization has.
This sounds like a great idea for Katherine. I think she’ll really excel in this role, and HBO has a knack for producing incredible original movies.
Could be good, sounds like ‘Rabbit Hole meets The Jane Austen Book Club’.
And for the record :
Nicole Kidman, Clive Owen, Al Pacino, Susan Sarandon, Kenneth Branagh, Claire Danes, Michael Sheen, Annette Bening, Ben Kingsley, Charlize Theron, Geoffrey Rush, Paul Giamatti, Laura Linney, Halle Berry, Jessica Lange, Drew Barrymore, Angelina Jolie, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, Ed Harris, Paul Newman, Helen Hunt, Ralph Fiennes, Meryl Streep, Emma Thompson.
That’s an incomplete list of highly acclaimed actors who appeared in (mostly HBO) TV-films / mini-series in recent years. Just to prevent the usual, inevitable “she can only do made for TV-films, now” kind of, completely baseless comments.
It’s not cable – it’s HBO.
Isn’t that their slogan?
I’m sorry, I just won’t be satisfied until I see a complete list. Please take a moment to put effort worthy of this website into your post before commenting.
I think this could be quite interesting. I am pleased to see her returning to something a bit more dramatic. She did some amazing work on Grey’s Anatomy.
the “for the record” comment above – clearly from one of Heigl’s reps or her mother. no one was saying she “can only do tv” so lose the paranoia. it’s HBO. it’s a great place to make films. calm down.
I’m surprised she’s still with Paradigm. Figured a WME or CAA would’ve stolen her by now.
People like Ummmm above make me laugh. It is like only people who hate Katherine Heigl can post. If you are fan or just someone interested in the story you can’t post – it must be Heigl’s rep or her mother. Yeah cos like you, they have nothing better to do than post in the comments section of Deadline. Right…
Thanks, I must say it IS rather frustrating, this is the second time that I’m mistaken for a momager on Deadline…and considering I’m a 23-year-old straight male, it is not exactly a good guess.
She is so unpleasant. Her attitude cancels any looks she might have and she needs to quit smoking. Don’t like her at all. To much negativity.
Agreed. If she weren’t outwardly beautiful Hollywood would have kicked her out on her can by now. Can’t think of too many others who have gotten away with what she has.
love KH – totally underrated. great acting chops along with old hollywood elegance.
I agree completely. I loved her on Grey’s Anatomy, and it’s nice that she is taking a bit of a risk (instead of doing another romcom). I’m sure she will be excellent in the film, and hopefully it will lead to more dramatic roles in the future (as much I enjoyed her comedic timing in Grey’s, she doesn’t pick the light movies).
Katherine Heigl is going to be left in a very awkward position, who’s she going to find to bash when she’s producing the thing?
Even on HBO Heigl would be more likely to work
a project with January Jones than Meryl
Streep.
She’s pretty. She’s vapid. She’s pretty vapid.
Yikes. Sounds insipid…. but then again she does insipid so well.
I think she and Tyler Perry should get together and do something really special… They’re perfect for each other.
Hated her on Grey’s for sticking her nose in the Isaiah brouhaha. Then snarking at the writers. Then horrible movies like The Ugly Truth (which I was dragged to) and Killers. If she wasn’t a beautiful blond she would have been drummed out of Hollywood by now. Next.
People talk such smack on her. I think she is immensely appealing – her appeal transfers well internationally also.
Sounds promising. I love Heigl, but can’t stand the big screen rom com genre she’s favored of late.
