The sale was for an undisclosed amount. The location is at 4401 West Sunset Boulevard. Transfer doesn’t happen for a year. KCET is now transforming itself into an independent public television station.

KCET makes the bad decision to cut it’s ties to PBS, and this is the price that needs to be paid. As much as we all love Huell Howser, I can’t see California’s Gold as the flagship program for any station in Los Angeles. Shoot, I can’t even see that for the flagship in Long Beach. The natural consequence is the station needing to clear out all that depressingly empty space and move onto something they can handle without the help of the PBS programming. There may be a soundstage in Pacoima they could use. At least the Scientologists will keep the building in good order and it’s original condition. They have a history of respecting property. If things kept going this direction with the KCET, it would be a parking lot in the near future.
It’s also a sure bet that the Church of Scientology will be more open to new people and new ideas than KCET ever was.
Mr. Buddy Bing:
The “Church” of Scientology is purchasing the physical lot and buildings of KCET at 4401 Sunset, NOT the broadcast channel. No chance in the near future of viewing a KCET Christmas special featuring Jenna Elfman, Tom Cruise or John Travolta. So sorry to dash your hopes….
Lighten up, Mike. It was a joke. Maybe not up to your defensive standards, but it was an attempt.
why would there be Christmas specials? Christmas isn’t a Xenu holiday…
I am happy that they sold that location to the Church of Scientology (who will continue spreading their message and social improvement programs) and not demolished and turned into a parking structure.
This is a sad day for Los Angeles.
All hail Xenu!
Hilarious. Thank you for the laugh.
Al Jerome should be tarred, feathered and run out of a rail for what he’s done to KCET. It’s too bad this is going to fall into Scientology’s hands — what a end-of-the-road legacy for what was the home of studios like Allied Artists in the ’50s and ’60s — but at least they’ll hopefully maintain upkeep. It’s news like this that makes me want to go to their neighbor, the Tiki-Ti, and drink. A lot.
And, as someone pointed out on another message board, this means that this property will be tax-free as it’s run by a church. Well done, City of Los Angeles.
Interesting. Are we going to have KSCI now?
Wow. this is min blowing. had no idea they had so much money and of course, wonder what the broadcast programming will be? Would love to see Huell Howser take the viewers through a Scientology church tour! Fascinating!
it is true churches do not pay taxes but their members do, and a hell of a lot of it, churches usually make their members rich by keeping them in line, at least they are supposed to.
ie janitor no church makes 36k a year pays 30-40% around 12k a year in tax
ie lawyer church member makes 200k a year pays 10-15% in tax around $20-30k
now who is the winner here ?
huh?
And the Scienos continue to buy up land unchecked. Ugh.
So glad to hear (cult) that this religious group (cult) will be expanding their influence (cult) in the East LA/Los Feliz/Silverlake region (cult.) Because we really can’t get enough of them!
Thanks Cruise, Travolta, and sadly, Beck (dude, I really liked your music,) et al. for bringing your unique brand of thought (cult) to our doorsteps. Thanks for turning your closets into our living rooms!
I’m calling it now. Positive comments = “Church” (cult) members. There. Done.
Cults have characteristics. Very specific. Google it. If it quacks like one, and flies like one, and shits like one… that’s a duck.
If the Great Mystery did not mean things to change, He would have made the Earth to stand still.
Old American Indian saying.
Great purchase that will be put to good use.
L. Ron Hubbard Way has been turned into a beautiful street. I’m sure the Church will improve the facility.
Just makes wonder how long before KCET files for bankruptcy? Then again I tend to favor the theory that this is all part of plot by Rupert Murdoch to takeover/destroy public broadcasting.
Clue me in on the reason. TV Azteca gets better ratings than PBS.
Noooooooooooo! Why did they let it go to the $cientologists? Anyone but them. I would rather it sit empty for a decade than to see that horrible cult get one more piece of Los Angeles real estate.
How disappointing. Not because they sold it to the Church of Scientology, but because it such an amazing piece of L.A. film history. Al Jerome has simply annilhilated KCET.
