EXCLUSIVE: Casting for the male leads on The Hunger Games isn’t complete. I’m hearing that at the moment, Liam Hemsworth is frontrunner for the role of Gale Hawthorne, and that Josh Hutcherson is in the same position for the role of Peeta Mellark. In the Gary Ross-directed adaptation of the Suzanne Collins novel trilogy, Gale is the hunting partner of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), and Peeta is the baker’s son chosen to accompany her as the district’s entry into the deadly Hunger Games reality show competition. Both have been hotly contested roles among young actors, as was Katniss before Lawrence got the job. Both of these guys look right for the respective parts. Per Lionsgate, no offers have yet been made, and nothing is definitive.

Hated Pettyfer but at least he was blonde and tall. Josh Hutcherson looks like Jennifer Lawrences’s Kid brother. This is who you want to play Peeta? I can’t even think how bad he will look with bleached blonde hair. There are no tall blonde guys in all of Hollywood who are good at acting. Let’s not even get started on Mr. Miley Cyrus for Gale. Gale. Smart, DARK, OLIVE-SKIN, hot Gale. I will just stick to reading the books the movie is going to be a nightmare for fans.

Cast the net and find new prospects Gary, lionsgate whomever. There are more actors out there than just 4 wrong people.
I really think for Gale they should consider Drew Roy. Not sure if he’s looking for the part but he looks like the right Gale to me.

None of the actors who tested are right. It was a BS bunch. Some pushed by Deb Zane who she cast in things before, other by Lionsgate who is very involved with WEEDS. Widen the search people.

I have read the books and I don´t know why you say the match the physical description cause the don´t. In the book Peeta is extremely blond and Gale has dark hair.

Eh… going dark to light and pulling that look off seamlessly doesn’t work as well/as often as going light to dark in hair color. Josh Hutcherson does not look like he’d be an attractive blond. And I doubt Peeta in a dystopian world looks like he goes to get his hair bleached. A good example is Nikki Reed… objectively speaking she’s not unattractive, but put blond hair on her and what’s unique and strong about her looks becomes all wrong and just bad.

Yup…Hunter Parish for Peeta…he can actually ACT…and is more mature therefore having more experience which of course should translate over. Josh is too young and have yet to see anything impressive. The other, NOT Gale. Gale is supposed to look older with olive skin and dark hair. Studios please don’t go for the tweens and don’t underestimate the intelligence of the readers…we are readers afterall!

Yeah, he’s 2 years younger than Jennifer Lawrence and 2 inches shorter. He and Evan Peters are the bottom of the barrel as far as Peeta is concerned. I know it’s important to cast a good actor, but this actor also has to have the right physical appearance and match well with Jennifer – who is 20 and 5’7. It would be soooooooo horrible if he gets cast. I love the character of Peeta and this would totally ruin the movie for me.

Uh… have you read the books? They look NOTHING like their prospective characters. I know makeup can work wonders and all (and perhaps it will work fine going from fair to dark) but I doubt Huttcherson will look very natural as blonde/blue-eyed with contacts and bleached hair… ick, so fake… like Twilight vamps Carlile and Rosalie!
With all the talent out there (especially the talent that ACTUALLY fits the physical description)it’s mind boggling that they would purposely pick actors that don’t match the part. These details can be SO distracting despite good acting chops and wonderful cinematography… I hope this rumor turns out to be a big fat April Fool’s joke!

I think Josh is an amazing choice for Peeta. Nice to see them going with a real actor as opposed to someone who is a pretty boy and just popular for that. Every interview I’ve seen of Josh he seems so down to earth and kind and that is exactly who Peeta is…I don’t care that he doesn’t have blonde hair. I’m on the fence about Liam. I think he could look the part but that’s not what is important to me. I prefer they can act and have the essence of the character…physical match is last on my list.
