In a move that may shake up the lead drama actress Emmy field this year, for the first time since the launch of Mad Men, co-stars Elisabeth Moss and January Jones will go head to head at the Emmys by competing in the same category, according to TVLine. For the first two seasons of the AMC drama, Moss was submitted as lead actress, Jones as supporting, with the two switching for Season 3. Now Michael Ausiello reports that Moss, whose character Peggy was very prominent in Season 4, and Jones are both being submitted for lead actress, which could jeopardize their chances to both land nominations like they did last year. The two also entered the most recent Golden Globes race in the same lead actress category, with only one, Moss, getting a nom.

January Jones is a horrible actress…she doesn’t deserve a nomination. On the other hand, Elizabeth Moss is incredible in everything she does and her character really came into her own last seasons…her scenes with “Don Draper” were among the show’s best.
I came in here to say this comment damn near verbatim.
Agree one-hundred percent.
I say this with love for both, but there is no race. It’s Moss’s to win. And dammit, she better.
Odd. I thought it was pretty obvious last season that Moss was lead and Jones took a backseat again. I don’t think this hurts Moss’s chances of getting a nomination, since episodes like The Suitcase are going to stick out in everyone’s minds no matter what. But I bet this means no nom for Jones.
A peculiar move for Jones–her role was definitely supporting this season (although there, she’d compete with Christina Hendricks).
This is strange.
January was one of the major stars of season three and accordingly positioned herself as Best Actress. Elisabeth, who was on the periphery of most of season three, understandably took a backseat and went Supporting.
But that was entirely reversed in season four, January missing most of the episodes and being used sparingly when she did actually appear.
Bad decision, January Jones.
I think they’re both amazing actresses though my personal preference is for Jones.
But this season Jones should be in the supporting category. She just didn’t have the material that Moss had.
January cannot act herself out of a paper bag!
There is something … odd about this post. That being said, I don’t think this decision helps Jones’s chances. There were more than a few episodes this season that she was basically not in at all. I think she’s going to get passed over outright for lack of screen time, and she’s “bad”, which never helps, unless you’re colorfully bad. Moss is good, but Mad Men as written doesn’t really have a female lead. She might still win though.
Her management team is deranged if they thing she’ll get a nom in the leading category for last season’s work…she was very much a supporting character in Season 5.
You’ve seen season 5?
January is okay in Seasons 1-3 but in Season 4 she took shrill to another level of camp. Elisabeth will get the nod. Perhaps it was so that Christina Hendricks will automatically get a nod along with Kiernan Shipka who was excellent this last season as well.
A couple of things on this:
A) This was TOTALLY Peggy’s season on the show, not to mention one HECK of a strong performance throughout many episodes, especially “The Suitcase” and “Chinese Wall”.
B) How can January Jones BE submitted for Lead when Betty wasn’t even IN every episode. Also, they didn’t revolve the season around her like they did in 3. And not to mention Betty was such a TROLL this season, and January Jones really didn’t give the greatest of performances.
C) With such strong performances by female leads on other shows… Juliana Margolis, Connie Britton, Katey Segal, Lauren Graham, Kelly MacDonald, Jennifer Beals, just to name a few… Moss totally belongs in that group, but i’d be pissed if January got nominated over any of them. And what’s crazy is despite her weakest performance on a season of the series, the SHOW was at it’s absolute best.
How come Matt Weiner picked January Jones over several other actresses who were better?
I’ve been asking myself the same question since I saw her in Season 1, Episode 1
Jones has no shot at being nominated in either lead or supporting at the Emmys this year because Betty was treated like sh*t last season. I’m surprised she’s submitting herself at all.
January Jones is as bad on MM as she was on American Pie. Why the hell does she think she is worthy of a lead actress nom??
This year the race should be between Juliana Margolis, Connie Britton and Kelly MacDonald.
Why do I get the impression this story is going to change between now and when Emmy noms are announced.
It doesn’t matter where she submits, she’s not getting nominated this year. The Mad Men writers treat Betty like crap.
