EXCLUSIVE: TV, film and comic book writer Mark Verheiden has been tapped to co-write with Akiva Goldsman the NBC TV series The Dark Tower. The project is part of a massive joint deal Universal Pictures and NBC Universal TV Entertainment signed back in September to turn Stephen King’s opus of best-selling novels — which have sold more than 30 million copies — into into a feature film trilogy and a TV series, both of them creatively steered by the Oscar-winning team behind A Beautiful Mind and The Da Vinci Code.
Verheiden will executive produce the The Dark Tower series along with Goldsman and his Weed Road Pictures for Universal Media Studios. As previously
announced, Ron Howard will direct the series, which is envisioned as a bridge between the first and second movie in the trilogy. This marks Verheiden’s return to NBC and UMS following his turn as a supervising producer on Heroes. He also was a writer/co-exec producer on the NBCU series Battlestar Galactica, which ran on Syfy. He most recently served as a co-executive producer of TNT’s upcoming sci-fi series Falling Skies, from DreamWorks TV. Verheiden, repped by CAA, Untitled and attorney Peter Nelson, is also in business with DreamWorks on the feature side, developing Quatermain for the studio, as well as Ark for Sony Pictures for producers Neal Moritz and Mike Richardson. He has written nearly 125 comic books including The American, Aliens, Predator, The Phantom, Superman and Superman/Batman.

Not a fan of Howard, not a fan of Goldsman but DEFINITELY a fan of Verheiden. A project I couldn’t give a shit about suddenly feels a bit more interesting. If only Fox had made movies out of his “Aliens” or “Predator” comics they’d have had “Transformers”-sized tentpoles out of both.
Mark Verheiden is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Talented, too. Great news.
Verheiden’s SOOO much better than Goldsman; Will the books never did much for me, I’m willing to bet the tv series will now be better than the movies.
Still have doubts this whole project will go the distance, though. They’re counting on both the features and the series to be hits… but what will they do if one or the other tanks? (Which is a VERY real possibility; King adaptations have been hit-or-miss in BOTH mediums…)
Worked with Mark. Super nice guy. Very happy for him and GREAT project.
Ah! It’s been a while since there was any news about this. It is a very interesting strategy that I’d love for NBCU to follow through on.
back in the day when i was a HUGE Dark Horse Comics fan, i was lucky enough to hang out with him and the rest of the creative team from Dakr Horse at San Diego ComicCon (back when it was much smaller, and much less commercial). He is an awesome guy and very talented and funny. (and so was the rest of the dark horse crew (and mike richardson is very tall)).
Wow, maybe there’s hope for Dark Tower after all. Goldsman is the exact opposite of what a fan of this series would want, yuck, yuck and yuck. With Verheiden coming on board all may not be lost here…
Regarding Goldsman as co-writer, the big thing I am hoping for is that SK gets a Creative Consultant role on the whole mashup… this story has had such a central place in everything he’s written that I have to think that he’ll want to make a total PITA of himself for it to be the way he wants it (or at least respectful of the source).
Mark Verheiden falls into the very small category of a nice guy winning in this business.
I had the pleasure of working with Mark on Battlestar Galactica. Get after it, Mark. Congrats.

was wondering who would wind up with the task of doing the writing chores for the tv part of the dark tower since how to like the movie part translate and not mess the thing up will be a task for any writer who gets the job.
Mark is not only a nice guy but a real talent. His work for Dark Horse is legendary among geeks (and too bad Fox never made films of his comics of ALIEN and PREDATOR). He is also a real genre fan with a tremendous understanding of the good stuff’s history. This is great news for DARK TOWER fans and a smart move by Howard and Grazer.
