Mary McDonnell, who has been recurring on TNT’s The Closer, is joining the cast of the crime drama’s extended seventh and final season as a regular, TVLine reports. She will reprise her role as Captain Sharon Raydor. TNT is planning to continue The Closer, likely via a spinoff titled Major Crimes, which would feature some of the series’ current cast members, so McDonnell’s timely promotion is sure to open up speculation that she may be groomed to succeed departing star Kyra Sedgwick as the franchise’s next leading lady.

Wonderful news! McDonnell is a phenomenal actress and a consummate professional. Would love to see Raydor bossing Flynn and Provenza around a spinoff. Smart move TNT!
Can this show please get cancelled already? I guess middle-aged women across the country need a show to watch.
I hope Sharon Raydor doesn’t have a pair of goober parents who will drag down the program with corn pone acting.

9 times out of 10 spin-offs don’t work, i like The Closer but won’t watch once Sedgwick is gone. Here’s hoping her Scream 4 character survives, i doubt it though.

It took me a while to get used to McDonnell’s unique delivery/voice inflection but once I did I found her quite compelling. (Come to think of it, I had the same initial problem with Kyra’s syrupy southern drawl and got used to that, too.) This show is hard to figure out. The scripts aren’t that good, the directing’s nothing special but I like the show anyway. Hmmm.
Mary McDonnell can do no wrong. She was tremendous in Battlestar Galactica. She’s an incredible actress that I would land more leading roles on the big screen. Although her portrayal as a cardiac doctor on Grey’s Anatomy was a bit much I suspect it was the director’s doing and not so much her. Still, she’s amazing and I love her on The Closer!

Mary McDonnell should be in big movies not just TV. She is one of the best actress from the US. I’d love to see her pairing up with Catherine Keener for a Thelma and Louise-like project.

Mary McDonnell is the main reason I watch the closer! Kyra is AMAZING…but Mary is one of my favorite actresses of all time! I can’t wait until Major Crimes begins…and I do hope the Mrs. Mary is the MAIN actor!! Good luck Mary! I love u!
