With speculation about Meredith Vieira leaving Today at the end of her contract in September in overdrive, Entertainment Tonight is reporting that her co-host Matt Lauer has also informed the NBC morning show’s producers that he intends to depart when his contract is up. In his case, that is almost 2 years from now, on Dec. 31, 2012. A lot can happen in 2 years, so writing him off the show is probably a bit premature but, after 14 years on Today, Lauer may be ready to do something else. As for what that something else is, there is speculation that he may reunite with former Today co-host Katie Couric and executive producer Jeff Zucker.

No no no no no no no no
Maybe we’re seeing the start of The Comcast Effect.
^ Something to think about….30 Rock predicted some moves like this in one of their episodes.
so NBC finally gets rid of Zucker…..limit’s GE’s role and now that Comcast takes over it is time to jump ship? Would have thought it was time to jump ship after the white tigers….give Comcast a chance to actually do something before you start bashing them.
Matt’s actually been on Today longer than 14 years. He’s been anchor since 1997, but he was newsreader for 3-4 years prior to that. So he’s pushing 20 years on that show, and I’m not surprised he’s ready to do something else.
If this news is true, then they are probably better off losing Meredith now, rather than in another year, when they would be forced to replace both anchors at once.
He’s too old to do anything else. He’ll probably try covering golf for NBC Sports after the Olympics.
He’ll just join the Obama re-election campaign with the hope of a juicy post, for all his support to the liberal agenda over the years. In case you didn’t see his “unbiased interview” with little Chucky Shumer, Senator from NYC.
At least we can look forward to seeing Matt on TV covering the end of the world in 2012! You know Kathie Lee and Hoda are getting drunk that day!
salary issues?
It’s got to be a grueling job. Sure, very well paid and gets to meet a lot of interesting people, but what time do they need to get up each and every workday? 4am? Earlier?
So you live in NYC and have to be in bed by 9pm? It’s like that Twilight Zone episode where the guy steps on his only glasses at the end.
All the Marxists are running for hiding. They have single handedly destroyed the news media and now Comcast will cut off their water. As long as these little cowards could make millions by throwing stones at others they were happy. Now the worm has turned.
Joe Scarborough and Erin Burnett.
If Meredith wants to go, then I send her blessings. Matt is confusing to me, what’s he going to do? Nightly news? I don’t think so. He better be happy he has this job. Another OU grad here and he is fine at what he does. Not amazing, just fine
Few remember that Matt got the newsreading gig because he was a buddy of Bryant Gumbel’s, back in the Gumbel/Pauley era. So he’s spent most of his professional life on TODAY. He’s got to be wondering if he’s hurting himself by staying rooted to the job, perfect as he’s been for it. I’d sure be looking around, and the Comcast factor is just another incentive for any conscientious NBCer with fuck-you money to do likewise.
Good riddance. He’s a terrible interviewer and a poor excuse for a journalist.
Too old to do ANYTHING? REALLY? I have two words for you Betty White.
Where does Matt Lauer go? Laterally perhaps should CBS decide to back up the brinks truck, but ‘pursuing other opportunities’ is absurd. It’s the cushiest job on the planet, it pays exhorbitantly and unless he wants to be a philanthropist, where does he think he’s going? If Brian Williams were leaving, that might be a play but that’s not happening. If Meet The Press were in play that might be something, but it isn’t. If MSNBC were looking to anchor its channel that too might be something but it’s so confused as a brand that the idea of jumping Lauer over Matthews et al would scare the heck out of them. At least we know Matt is rich because like Jane Pauley he’ll probably fade away and lead a less impacting life.
So lets make it a reality tv news show.
Wendy Williams as Meridith.
Nate Berkus as Matt.
Simon X-factor can do weather.
and leave Anne Curry to do side stories and singing.
I’ll cook and Al can still do weather.
He is just looking for more money. The show will have to shut down if all they have is Ann Curry
