Katie Couric, do you want your old job back? While media attention has been focused on Couric’s pending departure from CBS Evening News, the anchor who succeeded her on Today, Meredith Vieira, is reportedly plotting an exit too. According to TVGuide Magazine, NBC News brass are still hopeful they would get the 57-year-old Vieira to stay beyond September, when her current contract expires, but chances appear slim. When Vieira’s previous multi-year contract with Today was up last year, she only agreed to a one-year extension. And, after going outside to replace Couric in 2006, NBC may stick with homegrown talent this time, like Ann Curry or Natalie Morales. As for Vieira, she has discussed the possibly of leaving Today fairly recently. “I’ll know when it’s time to go, and I’m not afraid to go,” Vieira said in an interview last October. “If I were to leave at the end of next year because it’s time for me, I wouldn’t jump into another show. I would look forward to not working, to traveling with (husband) Richard and carving out time for us. You’re always doing something, if you are curious. It doesn’t have to be a 9-to-5 job.” She recently found a new career as a movie producer with the upcoming Return. Vieira also continues to host the syndicated version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, a gig she got as part of a contract renewal for The View at ABC, where she served as co-host from 1997 to 2006. NBC News issued a carefully worded statement that, while accurate, doesn’t actually address Vieira’s future on Today: “The Today show anchors are currently under contract and firmly in place.” Meanwhile, Vieira and Couric will rub elbows in London at the end of the month when the two will lead NBC and CBS’ coverage of the Royal Wedding.

Is that your final answer, Meredith?
I am glad she’s gone. I actually stopped watching the Today Show when they hired her. I feel that the people already there should have goten the job! I see they got it right this time
I have never liked her on the Today Show. There is just something about her on screen attitude that rubs me the wrong way. Bring back Couric!! Better fit.
Me neither. Viera was so much better on 60 Minutes. In fact, I didn’t care for her on The View, especially after her sanctimonious outrage over Monday Night Football’s Terrell Owens/Nicollete Sheridan opening. What a crock!
Give this to Ann Curry. She’s been waiting patiently in the wings for years. She’s a sweetheart and she deserves it.
@ Lesley:
I have to disagree with your assessment of Viera. I love her and I think she’s done a great job. She does seem like a nice person; in fact Katie Couric had a bad reputation for being really mean.
Ann Curry should SO get this job. If she gets snubbed again, I hope she tells NBC to suck it and goes somewhere else. Perhaps we should start a Facebook page, “Give Ann Curry the Job, dammit”!
Yea, why replace her with a new fresh face, when you can bring back the woman who replaced Jane Pauly because she had the gall to turn 40. It’ll kill NBC to try something or someone new.
Your main point notwithstanding, I believe it was Deborah Norville who replaced Pauley as the co-host of Today, not Couric.
Say it ain’t so Meredith. Ann is cool but not as warm as Meredith.
This makes me so very sad. Meredith was one of the best things to happen to the Today Show when she joined, and she will be missed. The play between her and Matt Lauer is priceless!
her husband is very sick…it’s no secret why she’s leaving the show..
I figured this was coming because she’s out so much. Even so, though, I will miss her because I really like Meredith. Wherever she goes from here, I wish her well.
Not Ann Curry! She is the WORST interviewer ever! She’s barely a good news reader! All that talent out there…there must be SOMEONE who might be able to do the job.
Sorry to see Meredith go. She just seems like a very laid back, funny person. And apparently she is beloved around the halls of NBC News. But yeah, her husband has serious health issues, and Meredith seems like the type to put family first (and she’s lucky to have the financial resources to do so). The one-year extension she signed last year gave this away; usually talent on these shows gets multiyear deals.
Ann Curry would be a major mistake, as she would have been four years ago. She doesn’t have great chemistry with Matt, can’t read a teleprompter, and does the whole faux emotionally-charged interview thing that drives me crazy. Natalie Morales isn’t the right choice either – she seems a little too serious.
I see an opening for Katie Couric. Might be her best move. May be a move seemingly backwards, but Today is such an important franchise, it might be too enticing for NBCU or Couric to pass up.
The 4 Today show hosts are perfect together, I hope she stays even on a part time basis.
Meredith is smart, savvy, funny– a real asset to Today.
If NBC is looking for a seamless transition, Katie Couric fills the bill.
Meredith is one of the reason a watch the Today Show, I will miss her very much. Wish her the best.
Actually was upset when Katie left but Meredith is great like her with Matt and fell that she is a good fit. I get the feeling that Anne and Al have a problem with her. However Anne has been there a while so if she leave Anne should get the co-anchor chair.
Ann Curry is very cold – wrong choice. NBCU should try to make a power play to get Couric back, doubt it’ll happen though. And if so, I’d move Natalie Morales into the chair… or Amy Robach.
absolutely right. give the job to the awesome and talented Amy Robach.
A faux idol type contest would be fun.
I’d love to have friends like Meredith, what a blessed life.
This is no strange coincidence here. With Couric leaving CBS & Viera leaving NBC, what better opportunity for Couric, who was nothing more than a dismal failure at CBS, to go back to where she belongs and hone her craft before getting ready to host her own talk show on the NBC O&Os in 2012. Trust me, NBC is dying to have her back and with the free timeslots they’ll have in the afternoons, that’s a perfect segway to merge her into the fold and make Moonvees look like an idiot. Harry Smith should be the permanent anchor of the CBS Evening News starting June 5th.
Harry Smith will be the next Walter Cronkite. I love his demeanor. Why CBS had him on that morning show all those years escapes me. They could have avoided the Katie Couric debacle altogether had they hired him.
I watch the Today show because Meredith is smart and hilarious. She has confronted family health problems with great humor and integrity. Wish her well following dreams put on hold. Love Katie and will be very sad to see her leave the evening news. She always lands on her feet. I’m still upset Gwen Ifill was not picked to host Meet the Press or for a major network in a similar capacity. Pleased to see women having more choices!
i think medrith was fine for the part, when she took over for katie couric . don’t get me wrong i liked katie but i didn’t know medrith would do as well as she has !medrith wish you well your friend sattva #1 .
Amy Robach, Amy Robach, c’mon everyone let’s hear it, Amy Robach, Amy Robach!!
I agree with you. I love Amy Robach and I think she would be Great
as Meredith’s replacement. If Ann gets the job I will not continue
to watch the Today show. I just don’t think she has the personality
for the job!!!!
Ann Curry would be the WORST choice. She can barely get through a newscast without stumbling, her “hard” interviews only qualify as such bc they’re so tough on the audience to watch & bewildered interview subjects to sit through, she’s not smart enough to handle cagey executives and lawmakers, her inability to do an “emotional” interview without loudly murmuring “mmmm” like she’s tasting ice cream is almost too cringe-worthy for words and her “fun” segments cease to be entertaining bc she has no sense of timing or understanding of television. Curry even fails miserably at morning show banter. She’s like the person at the party who, while everyone’s cracking up, tells the joke that falls flat & kills the mood in the room.
Just because she’s “waited” doesn’t make her more qualified than the long list of potential replacements. She’s unwatchably bad.
I like Meredith- although it did take me a while because she has such a different style than Katie Couric. At this point I give her a lot of credit to make the choice to be with family and spend time with her husband. I wish them the best. I DO NOT think that Ann Curry is at all an effective communicator- she lacks the listening component and when she asks a question she basically does not allow the opportunity for a response. I do not think that would be a productive move for the network. THere is a reason she was not offered the position before. Morales is bright, has an engaging personality, and is sophisticated making her a perfect fit for the position.
Go Away little Girl! I haven’t liked Meredith on Today since she started. Her interviewing is horrible. Go back to game shows. Ann Curry deserves a shot at the big chair. Ann is an amazing talent along with Lester Holt.
I always like mereidth I quit watching the show after she left she was sexy and had a lot of class.
