WASHINGTON DC: New MPAA chief Chris Dodd will deliver his first speech about Hollywood issues to a non-industry audience next week. He did tell me, though, that he’s preparing to enlist the government’s help in fighting piracy overseas. [Nikki UPDATES: Fat chance, since Dodd is a longtime Democrat, and the Republicans have already taken over the House of Representatives and are now targeting the Senate, too. The GOP and showbiz are barely on speaking terms. But of all the out-of-work Congressional blowhards which the MPAA could have hired, I don't understand why it chose an ethically challenged one in the person of Chris Dodd, whose efficacy and integrity is now at such a low point that every sitting Congressional member would and should be justified in shunning him.]
That said, the MPAA threw a kind of coming-out party for its new topper Friday night. Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers provided the only star power at the cocktail reception in the MPAA’s Washington headquarters, and he didn’t even perform since he’ll do standup in front of 2,600 VIPs Saturday night at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. It was Dodd’s pal, SNL creator Lorne Michaels, who persuaded Meyers to mix and mingle with the MPAA before the weekend’s main event. Dodd also didn’t address the group. Instead, the retired U.S, who juggled hors d’oeuvres from Top Chef All Stars runner-up Mike Isabella while listening to a pianist play lounge-bar renditions of The Lady Is A Tramp and Beauty And The Beast. Still, here’s a thought for Dodd: If he wants his next MPAA event to appear remotely relevant, don’t include DVDs of such newsosaur films as All The President’s Men, Broadcast News and State Of Play instead of The Social Network in the swag bag.

Still breaks my heart that this guy is now heading up the MPAA. His last couple of years in office would be enough to get anyone fired for ethics and bad decisions…so instead Hollywood allows him to fail upwards at the peril of the rest of us. He spoke last week about making anti-piracy a big crusade. He cited China as a major offender. That was a real stretch of intellectual know-how. Since he does (rightly) want to focus on anti-piracy, why doesn’t he start with YOUTUBE???!!! What the hell does he, and the rest of this asleep at the industry switch think is going on with YouTube everyday? It’s not an accident that DVD/Blue Ray sales are horribly damaged and devalued by YouTube jackasses “sharing” other people’s intellectual property for free! I’m not talking about promotional content, I’m talking about uploading entire movies and episodics in several parts! That’s called STEALING! Where the hell is the industry voice and why on Earth is this clown representing it now?!
That’s because Hollywood automatically gets a hard-on for any politician who has a “D” after his name.
You actually think crappy clips on YouTube is the reason DVD sales are declining in record numbers? Are you seriously that out of touch?
DVD sales are declining because people have better options; Netflix, Amazon, iTunes, Hulu, Redbox, etc.., and with paid streaming, people don’t need to own archaic discs anymore. Nor rush to return rentals to Blockbuster, oh wait. Not to mention the starting point of sales was artificially high because people who upgraded their favorites from VHS to DVD was a one time occurrence.
What’s truly tragic is clueless people like you, the MPAA, and the industry as a whole cries about declining DVD sales, instead of actually innovating and responding to what your very own customers are demanding with money in hand, happy to pay for, but oftentimes cannot find someone who will take their money for what they want. Which is access to any movie, any time, anywhere online.
No amount of lobbying and “anti-piracy” nonsense can change the tide of what consumers desire. Piracy figures which by the way were completely debunked by our federal GAO in an official report. You can either provide what consumers demand, or get left out by people like Apple, Amazon, and Netflix who will.
Get a clue, or get out of the way.
Are you Chris Dodd’s son? Talk about clueless! No one was talking about those other delivery systems you jackass! Those are just responsible for “glutting the market up” to dangerous overkill extremes. The conversation was about PIRACY!!! Those aren’t just clips on YouTube. There is a massive amount of entire productions (movies, tv series, etc.) being uploaded in multiple parts and relished by huge numbers of people thanking some moron for sharing someone else’s intellectual property. You could not possibly be more ignorant about this argument if you were a paid lobbyist…which you probably are (if not Dodd’s kin). Ass!
Broadcast News ia a perfect swag bag dvd for MPAA to present. It is the very essence of the MPAA thought process…”style over substance”…although, I doubt many would even credit Dodd with ‘style’ points except the MPAA.
They should include a copy of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” as that might be the most relevant storyline reflecting MPAA and Dodd.
DAN GLICKMAN was a much more respected, effective and ethical man for this job. He’s sorely missed and deserves to be in another high level position!
Are you on crack? Glickman is a boob and was a dud and a half in the job.
Dodd’s whole stuff at the end with Countrywide was a bummer, as was his standing against Elizabeth Warren’s nomination, but if the MPAA’s big purpose is to lobby DC, he has those relationships and was never afraid to speak loudly and ruffle feathers. His losing out on the Majority Leader job to the decent but much more timid Daschle really set the Dems back.
Using the expression “are you on crack” proves beyond a reasonable doubt that when it comes to writing, YOU ARE A HACK! What are other overused, outdated expressions you use? Let me guess: “Don’t go there”, “Get a life” and “It is what it is.” If only you were as half as witty as Dan Glickman, you wouldn’t be in Peets Coffee right now rewriting your 11th unsold “screenplay.”
Mr. Lieberman writes “fat chance” because the GOP has the House and is gunning for the Senate. That shows why Deadline is an ENtertainment news site (and an excellent one at that) and not a political one. Conservatives care about property rights regardless of whether the property is owned by a liberal or not. The worst attack on property rights in years was the KELO decision at the US Supreme Court and that was decided by… The liberals (or “progressives”) on the court. That dealt with physical rather than intellectual property, but I can assure you that the threat to intellectual property rights has been a big deal in conservative thinking for a long while. If you doubt whether conservatives would rally for the intellectual property rights of a liberal or liberal company, look at Microsoft. When they were under attack, numerous conservative groups and writers came to their defense. I am a very conservative guy, I’ve been published in The Weekly Standard and The American Spectator, host a conservative talk show, and I can assure you that as a conservative and as a Republican I take offense at the idea we would ignore property rights simply because they belong to political opponents. Check “deadline” corporate office email over the last three days. I sent in a report of a site ripping off “Deadline” content by the page. How does that fit in with your “fat chance” assertion?
China is a huge problem and YouTube, etc is as well. But Dodd resigned because he was an unethical slug, and I find it sad that that landed him this cushy lobbying job.
Of course, Mitch McConnell is a paragon of virtue, right?
I agree completely with you that conservatives would fight hard for the intellectual property rights of EVERYONE and that obviously means liberal, moderate and conservative alike. We both agree that he’s unethical and we both noted that in our posts, but the one point I would differ with you on is China…our product is barely seen there. Studios can’t even recoup reasonable precentages when our products are seen there. The REAL enemy to writers, actors, producers, directors is YOU TUBE. It’s a blessing for promotion, but they negate that blessing by making it a junk heap of pirated material. Too many people think “free” is better. This problem is kicking the ass out of the industry, but no one in the industry has the balls to take Google on. Dodd won’t. He’s a corrupt tool. But the industry had better pool its resources and take a concerted stand fast…this has to stop!
Why don’t you read the Fifth Amendment, genius.
No where in the 5th Amendment is there any language that sanctions the theft of intellectual property…”genius”. That’s about free speech, not freedom to steal! It’s scary that you are THAT uninformed. Don’t post half-baked hyperbole…post facts.
Re the choice of DVDs in the swag bag, how about not complaining about stuff you get for free. It’s not polite.
ugh…being a Connecticut resident, Ive had to suffer Chris Dodd for many years….this makes me sad that he is now going to taint the world of entertainment…I can almost bit a reshuffling of the rating system is going to go on…further censoring film
for all their talk about “freedom of speech”, the left sure goes out of its way to blame the media and video games for the ills of the world
He is considered a fake. Makes sense hollywood studio execs liked him
Chris Dodd is the poster boy for corrupt politicians. He knows he’s responsible for the 2008 collapse, him and that degenerate Barney Frank.
I think you forgot to add Harry Reid to the list along with Dodd and Frank. enough said
What was the other half of the quid pro quo? Dodd at the MPAA is an uncomfortable feeling. Just sayin’
GOP has little incentive to help conservative hating hollywood libs on the piracy issue.
Unbelievable that Dodd landed here… Chris “Kickback” Dodd, get your check books out.
Prediction – Dodd gone in a year.
Dodd is the gift wrapped bow to Hollywood’s ideology over profit.
“I am not a crook!” Sound familiar?…
