UPDATED: Both episodes were low-rated. (The premiere ranked as NBC’s lowest-rated in-season comedy series premiere ever with a 1.1/3 in adults 18-49, and the show tumbled 18% to a 0.9/3 last night.) Even ads for The Paul Reiser Show were annoying, even though I like him. I understand that NBC’s new brass was “reluctant” but felt the network “had to replace” Reiser with The Office repeats. An insider just told me: “We were hopeful about Paul’s show, but we had to make the decision to protect The Office since we have very important episodes in the coming weeks with Steve Carell’s exit and Will Ferrell’s guest shots.” Also worth noting is that NBC’s new admin is “still trying to deal with several other shows carried over from the previous regime” besides Reiser: Friends With Benefits and Love Bites. This statement to me from inside NBC sums it up: “Bob Greenblatt inherited nothing but shit.”

Unbelievable! Actually, it’s believable by why even bother putting this show in production. Even on paper, it sounded horrible. Hopefully the new regime will prevent such waste.
nbc should bring back Perfect Couples. it had a slow start, but so did Parks & Rec and they gave that show a shot and now it’s brilliant. Perfect Couples grew on me and became must-see-tv for my household. it was really showing major potential before it got yanked. BOO NBC!
couldn’t agree more, bring back “perfect couples.”
Relax; Reiser may be out but his rug still has first look deal with Universal.
why put it on the air?? Because we all love Paul Reiser, and NBC thought with the success of Curb, a show like it on a major network might work. Shame on you NBC, for not giving it a chance, all shows need a little time. And advertising, one week worth doesn’t work! I thought the 2nd episode was better than the pilot….Sorry Paul, find a good multi camera! I miss you!
So much for the “Paul Ryeser Sandwich,” I guess.
Nate n Al’s should be embarassed.
But I didn’t even watch it yet… Man.
I believe that’s the whole point.
I can do you one better, though: didn’t know it existed until I read this article. So that’s what – negative ratings?
If NBC is smart they will snap up Amy Landecker before another network grabs her because she is hilarious.
So does NBC burn off another comedy series, bring back Perfect Couples or just air The Office re-runs from April to September?
Every single master copy of Perfect Couples has already been dosed in Holy Water, before being dropped into a barrel of thermite, so don’t expect to ever see that trainwreck on any TV in the foreseeable future.
Office re-runs.
They’ll run reruns for The Office for the rest of the season. What they will do from May until September I don’t know. I doubt they will bring Perfect Couples back unless they air and summertime filler
Overdue
I didn’t even know the thing existed and I read entertainment blogs daily and often. I guess therein lies part of the problem.
Not a surprise. I actually like Paul Reiser, but this show was incredibly unfunny, a total train wreck. Forced viewing of these episodes could replace waterboarding as a torture technique.
Omid Djalili is/was hilarious. Shame to not have more of him on TV.
Absolutely. His character should’ve had his own show.
On a network? So millions of Americans are going to embrace him as a lead? Not so sure of that…
He could/should lead his own network sitcom. Why not? Especially if he wasn’t playing an ethnic guy and instead was just speaking with his normal British accent. They guy’s hilarious.
Whoever decided to schedule that show during Idol should be banned from any job (in any industry) requiring scheduling.
I thought the same thing until I saw the show. I was a HUGE fan of Paul Reiser on “Mad About You” and I like Andy Daly (who plays one of Paul’s friends on the new show) so I really wanted to like this, but it was REALLY REALLY AWFUL.
I think NBC put it there on purpose, knowing it would get absolutely hammered and they could kill it quicker to get it off of Bob Greenblatt’s plate.
I’m not surprised. I heard Paul on the Opie and Anthony Show on Sirius XM. They also had Jay Mohr in the studio, that many funny people in the room could have been classic, but was painful. Paul Reiser sounded wounded, he didn’t even know how to promote the show. Probably one of the worst interviews anyone has ever given, unless you love cringe worthy moments.
BECAUSE PAUL REISER ISN’T FUNNY!!!!!!
Yeah, I was listening that day too (well, everyday). It was painful, they were subtly making fun of him afterwards but still being good boys for the parent company. NBC should have picked up Louis CK’s show when they had the chance.
I almost read the whole article in usa today about this a couple of weeks back.
Yes, Love Amy! She will come out of this fine. Really do like Paul R., but the show was a mess. Perhaps he should get heavier into producing.
I only say about ten minutes last nights episode and immediately told my brother that this show was doomed. It was like a rip off of Curb Your Enthusiasm… one Larry David unscripted obnoxious show is enough. Sorry, Paul, it was doomed from its inception.
I caught the second episode the other night.
Henry Rollins, what were you thinking?
Show the last few Perfect Couples so we can see if Vance and Amy got married or not!
Whats the name of that Green Day song again?
They should order more eps of Perfect Couples. That show was funny and had potential.
Agreed. Perfect Couples was laugh-out-loud funny. I couldn’t find much to laugh at on Paul Reiser’s show except the “Persian” guy. And I like Paul Reiser. The material for his show was just not funny.
So what happened to NBC’s Love Bites? Is it ever coming along, or is it this season’s Day One?
I WANT FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS AND LOVE BITES!!!!!!!!!
No chance if the last comment in the article is true. Can’t wait to see what NBC comes up with for a Fall line-up next month. If Comcast runs the network like their cable company, look out. NBComcast would probably like to dump most of the shows and fill the airwaves with cheaply produced reality shows.
Hilarious news. Good to hear. That stuff was terrible.
Who greenlit this POS? Paul Reiser, really? He’s an awful, unfunny seinfeld wannabe
Even Community’s leadin can’t make this turd float
Right, because Community gets such good ratings…?
Yeah, more like “Even The Office can’t make Community’s turd float…”
It wasn’t the worst show on TV, but it clearly wasn’t that funny. Perfect Couples, Happy Endings, Mr. Sunshine — please take them all away.
I will stop watching NBC if I have to be subjected to one more ad for The Voice. Every single commercial break on Thursday night had an ad for the show, then a giant red violator at the bottom of the screen for it, and now a preview before Leno and SNL. I hope this show goes away after two episodes.
NBC’s marketing philosophy is if they yell at you incessantly, you’ll like something.
Amazing how big entertainment management works. So incestuous. Delude themselves that a hack comic who’s out of his prime can come back. Playing. duh da! HIMSELF! Hack comic actor with ridiculous friends. Can they ever crawl out of their comfort zone to launch something really interesting? no.
Hope cable takes over completely. hint: it is. Is Sarnoff rolling in his grave yet? NBC does not exist as we knew it.
