The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday granted the NFL’s request for a temporary stay on an injunction that lifted an owner-imposed lockout on players. That means the lockout is back on, just a couple of days after a Minneapolis judge’s decision had lifted it. Now the appeals court will review briefs by players and the league and could rule on a full stay sometime next week. Whatever happens, it’s clear the labor strife handcuffing the league and its players is having an impact on fans. On Thursday, ESPN’s coverage of the always-popular NFL Draft drew 6 million total viewers, 1.3 million fewer than 2010′s edition, Bloomberg said. The rating for the telecast that covered the draft’s first round was a 4.4, a 17% dip. Even players are confused: During last night’s broadcast on Sirius XM’s NFL Network, the Minnesota Vikings newly drafted quarterback, Florida State’s Christian Ponder, said he was heading to camp Friday. He probably showed up just in time to see the padlocks click shut on the Vikings’ facilities.

If ratings were really down it was because of two things: It was a bit underpublicized this year – I was surprised it was on when it was on – and it competed with NBA playoffs (all clinching games) and American Idol and whatever else you want to throw in there. Not so much “fan fatigue”.
Rock,
Your wrong. Not sure how much sports TV you watch, but the Draft was constantly promoted. It was the lead story every night for almost a month on ESPN’s Sportscenter, lead story on their show 1st Take, plus there were promos galore on the NBA Playoff Games. I’m not even including all the stories written about the draft picks in SI, Sporting News, etc. I even saw a promo when I was watching the Golf Channel for the Draft. Fan Fatigue of the lockout is all everyone is talking about now, sadly not the Draft. J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS!
All those steroids for nothing.
Did Bloomberg also have ratings for the NFL Network’s coverage? Add in their numbers before making a statement that draft numbers were off.
Sad to say, and I am a big NFL fan, but FUCK the owners and players alike!
Instead of them each wanting a share if an extra billion fucking dollars, why don’t they give it back to the fans by lowering the cost of admissions to the games!
We the fans make this mother fucker run! I wish we could group together somehow and let us ban the NFL for two years by not attending the games or watching them on tv.
Who’s with me…?…mom?
I just read that this draft had the second highest ratings ever? Even if the first night was down, it has nothing to do with fan fatigue. It has to do with a bad draft class. There were no stars and every single prospect had some type of questions around him.
