The Nicholl competition is open to any individual who has not earned more than $5,000 from the sale or option of a screenplay or teleplay, or received a fellowship or prize of more than $5,000 that includes a “first look” clause, an option or any other quid pro quo involving the writer’s work. For additional information, the complete rules and the online application, visit www.oscars.org/nicholl.

Good luck, everybody.
Can anyone give personal insight into this contest? It’s supposed to be the best in the biz but there are so many screenwriting contests out there…
Yes. This one is worthwhile.
It’s the real deal. The only one that any pays attention to. As a Scriptaplooza Judge etc., Nicholl is still the only one I care about. Whereas the other contests get stories about saving the world, Nicholl is more interested in just a good story, well told.
Hope that helps.
Nichols is by far the most notable contest, as it is sponsored by the MPAA, any other contest is hit or miss as far as the industry taking them seriously.
Don’t enter contest. It’s rigged like a Don King boxing match.
This is the best of the best. I won a couple decades ago and was instantly thrust onto the Hollywood roller coaster. Plus they pay you to work on your next screenplay. A nice, sizable stipend. You couldn’t ask for a better run, more welcoming competition.
Dear Rob, Yup, Anon, and Yeash,
Thank you for the kind and solid feedback!
Much appreciated.
What happens if you sell your screenplay after you have won? Does the organization get a part of the $$ from the screenplay sold?
@B.
Any $ from selling your script after winning go directly to you (and to your agent, manager, lawyer, the tax man, spouse, etc.). The Academy is not attached to your script in any way beyond recognizing it.
This is the ONLY screenwriting competition but the competition is stiff.
If you win, it’s like getting an Oscar from the Academy – the industry takes it VERY seriously.
The scripts are evaluated by mega-producers like Gale Anne Hurd and Oscar nominees/winners like Susannah Grant. Good luck!
@yup
FYI: It is NOT sponsored by the MPAA, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (AMPAS), the organization responsible for the Oscars. The MPAA does ratings.
Does anyone recommend entering this contest for a comedy screenplay? I feel like I heard this contest is not for comedies?
