EXCLUSIVE: Zach Galifianakis is withdrawing from starring with Ryan Reynolds in the Universal Pictures supernatural comedy R.I.P.D., which Robert Schwentke will direct. Galifianakis liked the project just fine–it’s about a force of undead police officers based on the Peter Lenkov comic–but scheduling just got too hairy. Galifianakis hoped to fit the film in before or after he stars with Will Ferrell in the Jay Roach-directed Southern Rivals for Warner Bros. But there was no certainty whether those plans would fit in because Warner Bros has an option on Reynolds, who might be obliged to do a sequel to Green Lantern quickly. Galifianakis also had the complexity of his own obligation to the HBO series Bored to Death. So his participation in the undead project is dead.

Good! Now, maybe I will go see the film.
LOL
Save me a seat, please, CC.
I still don’t really get why he signed up for a tv show right now…
No snark intended…
But from where, and how, has this “Zach” vulgarian become a comedy “star” with such a busy schedule?
Has he EVER been anything more than a one-note slacker type, and a profoundly unfunny, smarmy, actor?
Did I miss some major Hollywood announcement:
“For immediate release: Zach G. will hence forth be referred to as a popular comedic actor, despite all appearances to the contrary.”
One requirement of being a comedy star is to actually be funny which Zach G has been doing for 10 years. Go watch his old stand up or Bored to Death and if you still don’t laugh then at least you have Leno at 1130 to unwind to. I am also partial to hairy Greek men.
For whatever unfathomable reason, many many people think Zach G is hilarious. Clearly, this is incorrect, as the guy is so completely unamusing and obnoxious, his lack of comedy skills transcend opinion to be fused in fact.
Maybe cast Treat & Joe since this is basically a retread of Dead Heat.
Wow. As a comedy writer I can genuinely say there is no one I would rather have reading my lines than Zach G.
Anyone who doesn’t think he is funny, especially if you’ve seen his standup, is someone I don’t even want watching my movies.
Pretty sure the announcement was made when “the hangover” became the highest grossing R-rated comedy of all time and he stole the show in it. If you do that, you become a popular comedic actor.
This guy (other than being fat guy flavor of the decade) is just not funny. Yeah, he was in Hangover. So what? Was he funny? No. The first shot was the stereotypical “fat guy in his underwear” gag – LAZY. Zack is very lucky to have what he has. American audiences are simple when it comes to the “fat guy” – is he anywhere near (or shown any signs of) Candy or Belushi… or Farley. Uhm…no fu*%ing way – not even close.
I agree with “comedy writer” the guy has comedy skill and his stand up is hilarious. Yes, so far he has been playing the same types of characters… like ALMOST EVERY COMIC ACTOR IN HISTORY HAS DONE. Audiences like to laugh… we don’t care if we laugh at something that is similar to something we laughed at before.
Hey – I’ve been saying this forever. The guy started out good looking and eh. Got fat, a beard and made comedy history. Nobody still thinks he’s funny. Just cool to watch when he does wacky stuff. Like Charlie. But funny? No, this is the age of mediocracy. It’s that way with actors, musicians, screenwriters, directors etc.. We are in the worst creative time in modern entertainment history. Face it. If you are a success now all you get is the money. You will be forgotten. We all know you are average. So sorry.
Thank you.
Well said. There are more ‘Flavor of the month’ stories than I can count. Nobody seems memorable enough to stay in the limelight very long. But can you blame them for milking everything they can from their 15 minutes?
no, thank you. that was hilarious. i’m not defending any fat comics of the present. your comment lightened my MONTH. seriously, you do this tongue-in-cheek stuff at casinos? post where you’re you’re playing, and i’ll be there.
I’m not a fan of Zak G. ( He’s two bad movies away form hosting the Nickelodeon Kids Choice awards )- however I wont’ hate. If I needed to fill this spot in a jiffy- I’d grab Jonah Hill. He will sell some tickets. But if you REALLY want to get the butts in the seats- Go for Kevin James.. but that’s gonna cost some serious cash if they wait to sign him after the Zoo Keeper.
Too bad. I read the script and that part is truly hilarious, if maybe requiring a bit more badassness than you’d expect from Mr. G. I’m interested to see who the replacement is. I have heard a very big name.
It’s pretty simple — if you just watch his monologue to the last SNL he did, you’ll either think it’s great or you won’t, and then you’ll know which side of the “he’s the new comic savior” / “he’s just the next Kevin James” side of the divide you’re on.
I’m not saying it’s one or the other. He’s just got a pretty specific sensibility, and people seem to pretty much either like it, or they don’t.
Steve, give me someone out there, currently, that is funnier than Zach. Don’t say Kevin James. Let me guess…you’re a Dane Cook fan. I figured as much. Zach is one of the funniest actors in recent history. ‘Typical fat guy in his underwear’ in the opening of Hangover, or not, he owned that entire movie. It’s all in his delivery and timing. Who else do we have that can play the funny fat guy right now? Give it a shot. Surprise me.
why does there have to be a funny fat guy?
Galifianakis is the luckiest unfunny bastard on the planet. He was NOT funny in The Hangover. He’s ugly, short, and dull. Why is this guy getting work?
his standup and acting work is funny. i hate to call a stranger an “idiot,” but you, ma’am, are an idiot.
That’s actually good news. And no, I don’t want to see Jonah Hill, either, jeez.
Kevin James OTOH – anytime.
Didn’t find ZG that amusing in “Hangover”…the real laughs came from Ed Helms, who owned the film.
After 20 minutes, ZG drove me out of “Due Date”. Odd and offbeat doesn’t instantly transform into funny without some humanity. That could have been a problem with the script. The characters in “Little Miss Sunshine” were fairly off-putting at first, but they grew on me as their humanity was revealed through the story.
Yet, in “It’s Kind of a Funny Story”, ZG played something much closer to an actual human being (even if he was a troubled one), and I enjoyed his performance a lot.
And I’ve never seen his standup or TV, so I can’t comment. He might be only as good as his script.
