In its first upfront presentation since its Jan. 1 launch, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network announced the pickup of six new unscripted series and the renewal of four existing shows. The announcement didn’t include the most anticipated new OWN series, an Oprah Winfrey show, which will launch in September, after the end of her syndicated talk show. The network is yet to share details about it, though it is expected to be a talk show. OWN has been slow out of the gate, barely outperforming the channel it replaced, Discovery Health. One of the most heavily promoted first new series, Your OWN Show, flopped, and Oprah Presents Master Class has underperformed. But the network found early success with Our America With Lisa Ling, the first OWN series to get renewed, and Season 25: Oprah Behind the Scenes. The Judds also had a promising premiere on Sunday. Joining Our America on the list of renewed OWN series are Ask Oprah’s All Stars (picked up for six more episodes), Enough Already! With Peter Walsh (six episodes), In the Bedroom with Dr. Laura Berman (six episodes) and Oprah Presents Master Class (eight episodes). The six new series include Confronting…, I Owe You My Life, Louie Spence Dance Project, My Mom And Me, Sweetie Pies and Unfaithful: Stories Of Betrayal. Here are description of the newly picked-up shows:
CONFRONTING…
This provocative series documents the powerful and sometimes painful mediation process in which victim and offender come together in the hopes of achieving closure. Currently available in 48 states, mediation programs offer the possibility of catharsis, relief and, at their best, forgiveness. In each episode, viewers follow the real life process of both victim and offender as they prepare to confront each other, face to face, for the most important conversation of their lives. Produced by Relativity Real.
I OWE YOU MY LIFE
TV makes it look easy. Writers know how to make their characters brave in the face of unspeakable dangers, determined when the odds are against them, and focused and virtuous when temptations abound. What about real people? What makes us heroic? These and many more questions will be posed in “I Owe You My Life.” The nature of being a hero involves a multi-layered, complex set of circumstances, and this series will delve into the dramatic stories of everyday people from every corner of the world who take risky, even death-defying actions to protect others and right wrongs. Produced by Skip Film.
LOUIE SPENCE DANCE PROJECT
Manhattan, meet Louie Spence: He’s a world-renowned choreographer who has worked with some of the biggest names in the business. Everyone from Mariah to Kylie to the Spice Girls have tapped Louie’s creative talent — and now it’s Broadway Dance Center’s turn. The much-vaunted New York studio has commissioned Louie to breathe new life into its curriculum, so the flamboyant Brit is jumping the pond, prepped to revamp the program. He’s bringing his passion, his impeccable technique and his own unique style to the studio. Broadway Dance won’t know what hit it. Produced by Kinetic Content.
MY MOM AND ME
The mother-daughter dynamic can be more than a little tricky — so how much trickier does it become when kid has to play parent? “My Mom and Me” examines unusual mom-daughter relationships in which “normal boundaries” are challenged. Intimate, heart-warming and at times shocking, the series features mothers and daughters opening up about their atypical relationships and, with the help of a therapist, tackling their deep-rooted issues. Produced by Firecracker Films.
SWEETIE PIES
When Robbie Montgomery, a 1960s backup singer and former Ikette, suffered a collapsed lung and had to stop singing, she decided to pour her talents into another creative venture — a soul food restaurant. At her family-oriented eatery, Sweetie Pies, both hilarity and drama are offered in equal measure — and now Robbie’s upping the ante with a second location. This docu-series follows the loud, loving and often singing Montgomery family as they work to expand their empire, one soulful dish at a time. Produced by Pilgrim Films & Television.
UNFAITHFUL: STORIES OF BETRAYAL
This compelling series features couples that have suffered and survived infidelity in their marriages. In each episode, couples share their deeply personal stories of heartbreak, while a therapist provides perspective and advice on how to heal. Revealing and surprisingly uplifting, the series illustrates how love can endure even the darkest times. Produced by True Entertainment.

that is one depressing line-up.
I have to agree! I was looking for more uplifting stuff from OWN.
I can’t wait to see the Ryan and Tatum O’Neal series. That’s gonna be gooooood!!
The show runner for O’Neals is terrific — Gilda Brasch.
Watched the sneak peak for Unfaithful — awful, unwatchable, and loaded with cheesy reenactments. Thought it was something they were burning off. Yikes.
This network should be a slam-dunk. There is 25 years of archives to pull from. If “Behind the Scenes” is performing so well, why not offer up reruns of the old “Oprah” show?
And this lineup is way too heavy on unscripted programming. There is plenty of scripted material out there that can be produced economically and generate ratings. HARPO is a production company after all.
And you can’t go wrong with running movies.
I was a loyal Discovery Health watcher. I wish Discovery could at least find some way to use dubbed versions of the health shows that are still running on Discovery channels in Europe.
This looks like the stuff that didnt make the cut on Discovery, Health, or Food channels. Oprah can dump all the money she wants into this Titanic enterprise but it wont keep it afloat with this warmed over lot.
Agree w/Terrence totally. This seriously needs some scripted content in the way of series and maybe some movies. Why doesnt she start to do the movies of her book club?
Personally i think there is a goldmine in some of the smaller crime series – Nora Deloach “Mama Covington” series or Barbara Hamblys “Benjamin January” books or one of Gar Anthony Haywoods series. All of them come with an audience already in place. Her money would be way better spent optioning some good material.
I so agree with Rina, after Oprah has inspired us to read, read, read, we could now look forward to movies made about all the good stuff we read. Her shows now are so boring, even her last few shows on her talk show were boring. She is not reaching her audience anymore and she needs some really good guidance in this new venture.
Agreed….get a scripted show….do some OWN produced movies…don’t be a carbon copy of the alligator-swamp infested tlc.
OWN is part of the Discovery Networks, therefore the mandate for its programming (as you would find on the other Discovery Channels: TLC, Discovery Channel) will only be unscripted shows.
Ugh! None of this programming is distinctive or exciting.
Why is there no scripted programming here? Oprah used to produce great mini-series for ABC. All of these programs could be on any other cable network, like TLC or A&E.
Hell, why not be daring and create an inexpensive telenovela?
OWN just seems to lack a vision for being extraordinary. Given all of Oprah’s connections in Hollywood, I just don’t understand why she couldn’t have worked partnered with any of them to make a few inexpensive scripted shows.
The web is filled with great, inexpensively made, well written and acted webseries.
Why not hire some spunky creatives who follow in the footsteps of the creator of Paranormal Activity and Insidious or District 9?
Good scripted programming can be done on a limited budget. As much as people joke about soap operas, most soaps produce an 5 hours of programs/week for a $1 million. A 13 episode series made for $3 million? Why not take that gamble???
Oprah will not find the same success as a network mogul that she did as a talk show host. Her ideas of enjoyable programming don’t work — what worked on her show doesn’t work in this new format. She needs some serious guidance from folks who know how network TV works if she wants the OWN network to succeed. I rarely watch this channel — too boring and depressing.
Terrence, Rina, Tommy and Dee are so right! The feelgood topix that made for an okay hour on Oprah are not “shows” that i am gonna tune into 5x a week or even once a week. She made history with Oprahs book club and a lot of them were fiction – she cant get the rights to something and make a miniseries or series or movie for television?
Dee is right on when she says that “her ideas of enjoyable programming dont work” – Oprah has to get out of her big gold bubble and stop thinking about what she likes and wants to ram down our throats and start doing some homework on what viewers want to see.
I was there for 6 months last year. It is a very poorly run and disorganized place to work, and most of the execs were run-of-the-mill reality exploitation types who got “excited” about the same old crappy rehab shows you see everywhere else. There was a mandate that they were not going into scripted programming yet, but it looks like they can’t do that soon enough, really.
I looked forward to what OWN had to offer but I guess I expected too much. I think I’ve only sat through one hour in total. Very disappointed.
I can’t watch OWN. Find me ONE happy show!!! Totally depressing line-up.
CAN OPRAH ORDER ONE LIFE TO LIVE AND ALL MY CHILDREN???????
Now that ABC has canceled One Life to Live and All My Children, maybe she can pick up those shows on her network.
Totally agree that OWN is a downer and a BORE.
Very disappointed. Cannot watch a line up of hoarders,
women in prison, binge eaters, yada, yada yada…
I know Oprah wants the audience to learn from these shows
but no one can take a steady diet. And now The Judds, Tatum
and Ryon O’Neal, and -gulp- Sarah Ferguson???
Tacky Oprah, tacky. You can do better.
I did really enjoy the Big Bowl of Love, hope Christina comes back.
Kidnapped By the Kids is lighter and heartwarming yet no one tunes in. And its a pretty good show.So just to say light fare should be on is a bad argument. Appears people are responding to the newsy stuff like that Lisa Ling show. And Master Class is a masterpiece. Give it time is my thought. Some of the new stuff looks interesting to me.
Please, please, please oprah, pick up All My Children and One Life to Live – I love you already but will love you more – I just watched you on video when Susan won in 1999 and she yelled out a thank you to you – let her do it again…………
So sorry to hear that Master Class under performed. This is such an awesome show and so inspiring for those of us who continue on the path of discovery and inspiration. Please give it another chance and continue to bring in some heavy hitters. the Oprah and Maya class was sensational. I urge you NOT to take it off the air.
