The Parents Television Council has put a second broadcast pilot in its cross-hairs this season. After blasting ABC over the working title of its dramedy pilot Good Christian Bitches, now the TV watchdog is attacking the NBC drama pilot The Playboy Club over the nudity clause in the actors’ contracts.
Interestingly, PTC is going after the newly merged NBCUniversal, whose network NBC commissioned the pilot, not after the pilot’s producing studio 20th Century Fox TV, whose business affairs department inserted the controversial language. “During last year’s public comment period for the Comcast/NBC merger, the PTC called on the FCC to force Comcast to stipulate that it absolutely will not use the public airwaves to distribute pornographic material, the public interest demands no less,” said PTC president Tim Winter. “NBC now says it will air a pilot with Playboy in its name and the production company is requiring performers to sign a nudity clause — something virtually unheard of for broadcast TV. The ink isn’t even dry yet on the company merger and we’re already saying ‘we told you so’.”
OK, first, NBC has not agreed to air the pilot, it has ordered it for series consideration and will air it only if the project is picked up to series. Secondly, the nudity clause, which indeed is extremely rare for broadcast series, was put in the actors’ contracts by a 20th TV business affairs executive as a hypothetical, with sources close to the production stressing that there is absolutely no nudity in the pilot nor there is any plan for nudity on the potential series. Also, not all of the pilot’s actors agreed to the clause, so it is not in everyone’s contract. But, given its setting, a Chicago Playboy club in the 1960, and its subject matter, The Playboy Club would certainly be a sexy drama that no one envisions as a 8 PM show.

Hey Ed, I read drudge every day and could care less about Obama’s refusal to just show the damn certificate and get it over with. While drudge may lean more to the right it does at least present topics and articles from liberal, I’m sorry, Progressive news outlets and blogs. If we are going to fix this country and give our kids the opportunities that we have had then we had all better get on the same page.

listen, this country has a population of 300 million plus and many of those people don’t have the skills to work a job that keeps them above the poverty line, that’s why there are social programs so that EVERY american can have a decent life, which, i thought, is a god given right in this country. by stripping these social safety nets for millions upon millions of handicapped and less intelligent people you are subjecting them to a life on the streets plagued with drugs, crime and disease that will ultimately lead to prison or early death. These people have just as much a right to live as you and i and just because you don’t feel your hard earned money should go towards these programs doesn’t mean they should suffer for your greed.

Actually, fascism started off in an unpopular left wing political group. However due to Benito Mussolini, the founder of the Fascist Party being an opportunist, they changed their political ideology to the extreme right. Now this new form of Fascism is what inspired Hitler and his beliefs, and anything related to the ideas of the Nazi Party can be called fascist.
Benito Mussolini was a member of the Communist party but was kicked out for supporting Italy in WW1. So he split from the International Communists to form the National Communists.

I wish to point out that in the strictest sense Nazi (National Socialist – a blend of Socialism and Totalitarianism which is why people sometimes confuse it with Fascism) political philosophy is Socialist. However it is not the same as saying that all Socialism is Nazism. Far from it. One can be both, but only if one is a Nazi.

At least 9.5 million more deported, exiled or imprisoned in work camps, with many of the estimated five million sent to the ‘Gulag Archipelago’ never returning alive. Other estimates place the number of deported at 28 million, including 18 million sent to the ‘Gulag’.
Mao Zedong – in 1959 his socialist government through his ‘great leap forward’ caused “the worst famine in the history of mankind” in which an estimated 43 million died.

That is correct, the Nazis were socialists. In the 1920s, Hitler joined the German Workers Party and when he took it over he re-named it the National Socialist German Workers Party. It was Hitler who turned this workers’ party into a Socialist party. Hitler also created the nickname for his party, he called it Nazi. The “Na” is for the “Na” in National and “zi” is for the “zi” in Sozialiste, which is the German spelling of the word Socialist. Everyone in Europe knows this; the only people who don’t (or who refuse to admit it) are American Democrats, progressives, leftists, etc. Neither Hitler nor the National Socialists (the Nazis) ever referred to themselves as Fascists. They were accorded this title because Hitler did model his National Socialist party after Mussolini’s National Socialist Party, and they actually did call themselves Fascists. Socialism is what a “Communist” government will call itself. In Communist ideology, there is Feudalism, Liberal democracy, dictatorship of the Proletariate, and Communist Utopia. Communist Utopia is what Communists aim for, but it is basically an ideal anarchy, so if there is any government they are apt to call themselves socialist if the follow marxist ideology.
Communists are after one thing: equality (as opposed to equity) – everyone is the same. Communist systems have been used by leaders for other purposes, but this is the fundamental idea.
Fascism is different in that the leader as no intention (either genuine or simply expressed to the public) of sharing power, but rather is obviously not sharing power. Fascism is not going for equality in any way, whether in name or in practice.
Also, Fascists and Socialists hate each other. For example, the RUssians (SOcialist) hated the Germans because they were fascist, and the Nazis hated the Russians because they were socialist. Stalin hated the Nazi system so much that captives of Nazi Germany, when liberated, were not trusted simply because they came in contact with Nazi though, and so were sent to work camps.

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any credible leftist who’s ever claimed that Hitler was a republican in either the 20th centure US sense or the classical sense. It always amazes me, the people who get on their high horses about profanity. They’re just words. Yes, they drive the point home. They say “I am upset and feel passionately about this”. We typically reserve them for these instances, or similar ones, otherwise they lose their “punch”. But the only reason anyone finds these words offensive is because someone else TOLD THEM to feel offended by them. There is literally no other reason.

Same thing with nudity. The only reason we find nudity offensive is because we’re told to. Notice how PTC’s response says they don’t want “pornographic” material on TV. Nudity is not automatically pornographic, but the PTC seems to assume so just because a little more flesh is shown than normal. A woman’s ankle isn’t pornographic to us, but in other cultures it very well may be… because they’re TOLD it is. And no other reason.

Have you not been watching TV lately? There’s not enough sexiness for you? Half of all of the scripted shows on TV have plenty of sex and violence. A couple of shows that I watch have characters continually jumping in and out of bed with each other (and everyone else). And the gay community is well represented as well, which is fine. Just saying, it’s not like the ‘conservatives’ have ‘taken all of the fun out of tv’. If you think so, then you need to take another look at the TV landscape. I think we have enough already.

It isn’t that I can’t get plenty of porn elsewhere. The problem is that some plots require swearing or sex, because that is part of life. The whole experience turns from drama to absurdity when you see two people supposedly waking up from a wild night, and the woman had her bra and panties on the whole time? Or how about a big angry encounter between two people about to crack, and the worst anyone says is “darn it”?
Next up from the PTC… car chases cannot show anyone violating traffic laws! Dirty Harry will have to be slowed down so he never appears to go over 55, and the CGI people will add blinker flashes before all lane changes.

You are so right. There are a number of shows I didn’t know I would be interested in until the PTC went warring against them…
at the fact that PTC is doing this. Why? Free publicity.
I think groups like PTC play an important role in pressuring tv networks and govt. agencies to control the content of programming, during certain hours of the day. I would like to see the folks who are deciding what airs and when, voluntarily refrain from nudity, violence, and other adult content during the day and evening. But with some of these folk – I don’t see a moral conscience trumping their desire for potential profits. In this particular case, It sounds like the PTC jumped the gun, and that there was no real chance that Playboy Club nudity would be aired in primetime.
The problem with the PTC is that their objective is to stop content that they find objectionable ANY time of day or night.
The PTC loves to use the “think of the children” excuse to pressure shows on network television and cable. Even the ones that air after 10pm like the adult oriented shows on FX network.
To the PTC, there is no place for any programming geared to an adult audience period. Look at their “best of the week” column. Every show could air on Disney.
Something tells me they are unfamiliar with Jacobellis v. Ohio.
If I were Bob Greenblatt at NBC, I would consider an abortion episode on Parenthood involving the Amber character. NBC is in last place, it needs any attention it can get. Yes, it would get negative press. But, it would get people talking about the show and people would watch. Bob Greenblatt talks of making NBC edgier right? What better way to do that than to explore the pros and cons of an abortion? It would generate buzz for the show.
The real show about the 1960′s, MAD MEN is coming back – do we really need these knock-offs?
These shows won’t have the quality of the writing and acting that MAD MEN has.
Even if this,and the PAN-AM related Pilots-in-the-1960′s one gets picked up, they will never last.
Both scripts are great though.
It’s interesting that the networks have so many period pilots this season and potentially very exciting, but the sad fact is, period pieces are pricey and nervous networks will ax them fast if they don’t get big ratings out of the gate. Only cable seems committed to period pieces.

umm, you may remember a show called “24″ (one of the best shows in TV history). It was probably the most violent show on TV at the time and the PTC NEVER SAID A WORD! I wonder why? Perhaps it is because Brent Bozell is the head of the organization and he didn’t want to lose his spot on the line to kiss Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh’s ass! An article in Variety indicated that one, no nudity was shot for the pilot episode and there is said to be no plans for nudity if the series is picked up for fall, and two, the clause could allow for two different versions of the show(censored and uncensored versions, if you will).

I thought that under SAG rules, actors had to give their permission for nudity on a scene by scene basis, with the content of the scene being described in each waiver. I thought a general nudity waiver would be unenforceable under SAG.

Parents TV Council are promoting attitudes known to result in widespread and often serious harm to children. It is not coincidence that the USA has ten times the teenage pregnancy rate of Denmark (and other western countries) which don’t suffer from such horrendous body-shame. It is long overdue that they took a serious look at the facts.
Oh, so the teen pregnancy rate is related to “horrendous body-shame”–wow, hadn’t heard that one yet! I thougt perhaps it was related to the sexualization of our CHILDREN (push-up bikinis for 8 year olds?) and non-stop soft porn in their little faces. Or the fact that a huge percentage of them aren’t raised in two-parent families that model a committed relationship.
