This is wonderful! Scenes of fighting and designing and wardrobe-making just prior to the start of the filming. Plus a blessing of the soundstage and a peek at some cast members including Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman. Peter Jackson even points out what’s from Lord Of The Rings and what’s new. The video blog is in high-def and more than 10 minutes long and on his Facebook page: “As promised, my first video from the set of THE HOBBIT. Enjoy!”:

That’s just great fucking news! The Hobbit! Meanwhile, back here on the planet earth … ! Why doesn’t this stupid fuck grow up and make a movie that’s isn’t about some dink ass kid’s fantasy? The world’s already forgotten – what was the name of that CGI-infested trilogy again … ?
Try to relax, huh?
Go back to Mt. Doom, Sauron! (and STFU, you wet blanket!)
Shouldn’t you be off kicking a puppy somewhere?
Because movies aren’t supposed to be real, that’s why they are movies. Storytelling. I am very curious as to what movies are on your top 5. And what do you care? Just don’t go see it then.
CGI-Infested? LoTR is renowned for using as little CGI as possible. In stead of coping out, they used miniatures, which are much more difficult to make.
I enjoyed that entirely TOO much! Cannot WAIT!!!!
I wonder if Nolan will do something similar with The Dark Knight Rises . . . or not.
Not only does he make movies really well, but video blogs, too.
I was just going to say, this V-blog has more production value in 10 minutes than most movies I’ve seen recently. This movie is going to blow people away, prepare yourselves!
I’m not sure who does his vids but we should give credit to whomever it is. It IS exceptional. But I can’t help but think that with all the stuff he’s busy with he has time to craft and edit these pieces.
I could be wrong, but expect I’m not.
Either way, it is phenomenal.
The scale, scope, and attention to detail are astounding. I wasn’t excited about The Hobbit, but after seeing that, I have a faint hope they will be able to capture the magic of the first three films.
This is wonderful indeed, Nikki. Me and the other “dink ass kids” that generated $2.8 billion in theatrical revenues ALONE can hardly wait for The Hobbit to hit the screens.
Peter Jackson’s life blood flows through middle earth and is now inextricably tied to J. R. R. Tolkien’s beloved books. I can’t imagine anyone else having brought “The Hobbit” to the screen—it would have been a tragedy had that happened. Thank you Warner Bros. and MGM for making the right decision here. That was a nice first glimpse of one of the few films I truly cannot wait to see.
Very well said. I totally agree. I can’t wait to see more of there video blogs. Maybe other directors will do similar things in the future.
Cannot wait! An amazing story placed in the very capable hands of Peter Jackson! Real literature being successfully brought to life is a pure joy to watch.
“The Hobbit” will not be as good as the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. It will be better.
Love Hobbit! Soooooooo excited for this movie!
That was pretty cool. I love that they had a blessing of the soundstage.
Made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I’m really glad Peter Jackson is directing and not Guillermo “can’t get a project greenlit” Del Toro.
I wasn’t interested in Hobbit, especially after Guillermo left, but i have to admit as i watched this i was almost getting intrigued again.
The LOTR trilogy got gradually worse as they went on from the 10/10 Fellowship to the 8/10 Two Towers (everything worked except the awful SFX on the Ents, walking etc) to the “will it ever end” 7/10 Return Of The King, but here’s hoping Hobbit is a step back in the right direction.
That said each of the trilogy books is significantly bigger than The Hobbit and each took only one movie to tell so the idea that Hobbit is less material being strung out to 2 movies worries me.
The Lord of the Rings films are masterpieces. They simply got more complicated as they went along. Just like the books.
I thought I was the only person in the world who thought the first movie in the triology was better than the second and that the second better than the third. Don’t get me wrong, I liked all of them, but I always felt that the Fellowship of the Ring was the best of the three.
I haven’t watched this video yet, so maybe I’ll be more excited about The Hobbitt after I do see it.
Glad to see he put some weight back on. He looked strange and unhealthy when thinner.
Awesome. This is how great movies are made, when the director is fully delved into his world.
I’m not a big fan of video blogs, but this one was so well done. Facinating look into how they make a giagantic tentpole movie like this. It’s going to be a truly marvelous film, just from what I’ve seen here. Thank goodness Peter Jackson is doing it. (Though I think Del Toro would have done it justice.) There were so many things that stood in the way of this happening (the Jackson lawsuit, Hobbit movie rights, MGM’s Bankruptcy and an earthquake in New Zealand) Congratulations on getting to this magical point of beginning!
Nikki, thanks for going geek.
Peter Jackson is my hero! He goes to such lengths to bring the books to life – who else could’ve done what he’s done… and what he’s about to do? I, for one, appreciate every little detail.
