EXCLUSIVE: As HBO prepares to unveil its epic-sized series adaptation of George RR Martin’s Game of Thrones this Sunday, the payweb has begun talks to acquire the Neil Gaiman novel American Gods to be developed into another fantasy series. The project was brought to HBO by Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and it was brought to them by Robert Richardson. The plan is for Richardson and Gaiman to write the pilot together.
Richardson is the renowned cinematographer who just completed Hugo Cabret and whose recent credits include Shutter Island, Inglourious Basterds and Kill Bill. He is a regular collaborator with directors that include Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino and Oliver Stone and has won Oscars for The Aviator and JFK. It is his first significant scripting effort. He’ll do it in collaboration with Gaiman, a fanboy god for works like The Sandman, whose script work includes Beowulf. His novels Stardust and Coraline have been turned into films, and Neil Jordan is directing an adaption of Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book.
American Gods, the 2002 book that won both the Stoker and Hugo Award among other prizes, lays out a battle between two sets of gods. One consists of the traditional gods and mythological creatures who got their power because people throughout history believed in them. They are losing steam as people’s beliefs wane and are in danger of being supplanted by a new set of gods who reflect America’s preoccupation with technological advancements and obsessions with media, celebrity, technology and drugs. The protagonist is an ex-con who becomes the traveling partner of a conman who turns out to be one of the older gods trying to recruit troops to battle the upstart deities.
Playtone just completed its run of the HBO series Big Love, and generated the miniseries The Pacific, John Adams, Band of Brothers and From The Earth To The Moon for the network.

I’ve been wondering when someone would snap this up. With Gaiman co-writing, it should be great. Can’t wait.
Gaiman is an absolute hack. His plot are terrible and his characters are miserable. He does have a proficient staff who spends all theri time on the web writing glowing comments… too bad when you’ve seen the sales figures you realize he has a tiny audience and it’s all a snow job.
This is a ridiculous comment. If it’s your opinion that Neil Gaiman is no good, that’s fine, but you can’t say he’s empirically bad. As for his fan base… I think you’ll find you’re very wrong about that.
By audience, I guess you mean Sea Org members.
I enjoyed American Gods and in fact couldn’t put it down. Then I read some of his other books and also enjoyed them.
Yes, do check out his sales figures, and you’ll find he’s immensely popular. His books are consistent bestsellers. Sam is talking out of a non-mouth orifice.
The only people privy to “sales figures” are in the publishing industry. Gaiman has never sold through and that’s why he isn’t being offered big advances. I would believe the Sea Org accusations since his press on the web is way out of proportion with his lackluster movie sales and inability to sell through. The fact Hanks has not read American God’s suggests it was optioned by a staffer and now Hanks is being pressured by Scientology to move on it. Can you say “Carnivale?”
OH MY! What awesome source material for a show. And a lot of room to expand on the basic story and take it off in different directions, a la “The Walking Dead.”
Sick!
How to spot comments by Scientology Sea Org members writing on behalf of Robert Richardson (Scientologist) and Neil Gaiman (Scientologist) on this thread.
Usually, the comments are ridiculously enthusiastic and gushy. They have that “Hallelujah” feel to them.
Sea Org comments are tapped out by Scientologists living in barracks and living on $50.00 per week. (Rice and beans are on the Scientologists).

This, is how they operate. All day and night.
not that it matters, but Gaiman isn’t a Scientologist… his parents i think were but he isn’t… again, not that it matters… Sandman is one of the greatest pieces of fantasy fiction ever… and his novels are creative and enjoyable if not up to snuff with the snobbishly high standards of you haters

Best news of the day!
Yes. Just … YES
Wow!
That was a terrific summary of the book.
Robert Richardson, director of photography, has begun preproduction work on WWZ at Elstree Studios in London. The film stars and is produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B and is directed by Marc Forster. Production is to begin in May.
Looking frward to both WWZ and this new project.
So that’s like HBO: 20, Netflix: 1?
Maybe they can make the screenplay adaptation entertaining. Horrible, droning book.
…that’s probably why it won the Hugo and Nebula awards when it came out.
Even those organizations make mistakes. It’s easy to point out a dozen poor choices over the years. My critique isn’t based on accolades received, it’s based on trying to read the thing.
I don’t know if it was Hugo and Nebula worthy, but I read it in high school and remember it being pretty good. A little forgettable. The ending was a little anticlimactic, so it’s actually probably a good call to make it a TV series and not a movie.
I don’t know, mk . . . everybody’s entitled to their opinion.
“Horrible, droning book”, eh?
I rather liked it. A lot.
I’m so tempted to call you a name or question your intelligence for not liking a book I love. But that would be reactionary if not flat out adolescent. No point in attacking you personally because we don’t have the same taste.
I, for one, am happy they’re making it into a mini series.
Woohoo. Fantastic news!
I guess if anyone could do this book justice, it would be HBO… But I’m still wary.
I haven’t been able to afford HBO since my divorce…sigh…too bad it can’t be on PBS:) but Congrats Neil! maybe I’ll be lucky enough to win the speaking part in the audio book…
If Gaiman is involved – it will be a horrible, prolonged mess – script and process. The American Gods moment has come and gone. Has any hack ever nurtured his “reputation” so carefully and so strategically?
Calling Neil Gaiman a hack? On what facts, besides personal opinion, can you base such an accusation?
Sounds like somebody doesn’t understand the whole concept of “facts” and “personal opinion”.
Gaiman being a hack is based on his shitty books and unwatchable movies. See Beowulf.
I think I just had my first fangasim
Brilliant! On all fronts: Great producing company, great writers, brilliant story. Let the filming begin. Hooray!
Oh, that is exciting news. I do hope Neil writes the screenplay or has some sort of involvement with it, since only when that happens do adaptations of his novels work.
YESSSS!!!!!
Am skeptical about a DP (even one as brilliant as Richardson) writing on it.
More skeptical about Gaiman – love his novels but has not managed one successful adaptation.
I am excited about this. I just finished going through American Gods for the third time, this time as an audiobook. This series has an extremely good chance of being great, and may very well be amazing. I’m glad it will be a series, because no one could reasonably cram that much novel into a movie with butchering it beyond recognition.
I like this news. American Gods should be a tv show, it’s too dense to be a movie. And if it was on HBO, Showtime etc then they don’t have to water it down.
It might not be Gaiman’s best novel but it’s still very good and this, fingers crossed, could turn out to be awesome. Turning it into a series is the best way to go since its theme is dense and multi-layered, whereas a movie would just scrape the surface (as well as doubtlessly being reduced to a 3D SFX-led, gods vs. gods fightathon, in which our hero, The One, who comes from humble beginnings… I’ll stop now. I’m depressing myself.
I so look forward to the Rock City part because:
1. Gaiman totally caught MY reaction to the dioramas there.
2. The countryside there is spectacular.
HBO continues its great love affair with Playtone…brilliant! This has all the parts to be great – it will be interesting to see who gets cast. And “Lucas” – note it’s set to be a series, not a movie, which makes me happy as well.
Sincerely hoping they don’t whitewash the main character with this.
I really wanted to like “American Gods”, but the book is just terrible. Straight up. If anyone but Gaiman wrote the book, it probably wouldn’t see the light of day.
I got up to page 120 before having to toss it. The premise is definitely interesting, but the execution is so dull it turned me off from Gaiman.
I love when people give a review after reading 25% of something. Is it perhaps possible you’ve missed something by skipping 75% of the novel?
