Back when I saw him in late February at Harvey Weinstein’s Oscar night party for The King’s Speech, Quentin Tarantino told me that his script for a Western was just pouring out of him easily, that he’d finished a draft and expected to turn in a final version within two months. As a web leak of the cover page of his new script Django Unchained attests, Tarantino finished that script two days ago, right on schedule. Here’s what I’ve heard: While Tarantino has spoken about doing a variation of the Western genre he called a “Southern,” I’m told he has actually written a spaghetti Western, that stylized and violent brand of films popularized by Sergio Leone and a few other directors in the 1960s. Tarantino will put his stamp on one of his favorite genres same as he did when he took on the war mission movie with Inglourious Basterds.
The project is moving very quickly. Tarantino is reuniting with Pulp Fiction producer Stacey Sher. Sher will produce with Pilar Savone. Weinstein, who distributed Pulp Fiction, will spearhead domestic distribution on Django Unchained through TWC. Universal International has the inside track to co-finance and handle foreign distribution because of the relationship built on 2009′s Inglourious Basterds, which grossed $200 million overseas and $324 million overall. Despite the early look that Universal International will get, Tarantino’s script is also being pursued by Warner Bros, Paramount and Sony Pictures, I’m told. Django Unchained will be casting up quickly to begin production later this year; whether it starts late summer or fall depends on cast availability. Just like on Inglourious Basterds, Tarantino will be casting top-shelf on his spaghetti Western. Getting the WME-repped Tarantino back behind the camera is another boost for the rebounding TWC. After the leak of the cover page, everyone involved will be working harder to keep the script under wraps.

When Q made Dogs it was all working.
Because he wasn’t in the creative trap of having too much money. He had to get into that place that only an imaginative artist has experianced.
That door is closed for him. LB helped a great deal to shut it and triple bolt it. Sad stuff. I was there. Next.
Weary of second guessing QT. Had him down for the count so many times and he keeps coming up. He’s an original, albeit, a derivative one. Know that sounds contradictory, but he manages to re-imagine genres, styles, eras, etc. in his own way. Have my issues, but can’t say I won’t show up to his next imagining.
EVERYTHING is derivative. EVERYTHING. Movies. Books. Songs. Television shows. Speeches. Recipes. Car designs. House plans.
EVERYTHING.
Art is taking something that’s been done (because EVERYTHING has been done) and making it your own. That’s what QT manages to do every single time.
Actually, I could see QT doing the story of the Battle of Nueces. German immigrants that called themselves “freethinkers” settled in what is now Comfort, TX and were strongly opposed to slavery, were diehard believers in the American dream, gave sanctuary to slaves and were solid supporters of the Union during the Civil War, a ballsy thing to do in a state aligned with the Confederacy. The Texas Rangers were sent in and killed and burned the hell out of the place. Christopher Waltz would be perfect as one of the German immigrant leaders. Lots of violence guaranteed.
Then again, it could be “Mandingo Redux” as well.
Wow, are we really questioning Tarantino’s relevance? Goddamn. Some of you are so full of it. Tarantino is a movie-lover’s dream. Period. I mean, excuse me? PF is genius, but I also dug the KBs and Jackie Brown. And while IB may not be a fave it grows on me with each viewing (can’t help feeling Brad was miscast, but why quibble). But to feel punitive towards Tarantino because he hasn’t made another PF? The hell? It’s clear QT has plenty more up his sleeve, masterpieces included, and (God willing) another 40 years remaining in an already stellar career. No apologies required.
Quentin is slowly but surely working his way through the video store genre shelves in his mind.
No need to try to keep the script under wraps. Every single Tarantino script has been leaked beforehand and it never had any negative impact whatsoever. In fact I think he even put many of them out there himself. He doesn’t seem to worry. Neither should anyone else. Because contrary to popular opinion in Hollywood, a script leak has never had any effect on box office performance of the final product.
Right on. QT make that spag western!!
anything like Leone’s films and I’m game.
BUT, what’s he going to choose for music and score? Ennio’s scores almost make the whole movie and give it such color.
I’m just glad he was able to finish the script with alan ball’s bird menagerie interrupting him so much.
You know, I’m sure this will be a great QT production, but I have a real problem with him calling it a spaghetti western. That diminishes the original reason why they were called such. Like I said – I’m sure it will imitate the genre and it’ll be great and I’ll enjoy it – but I think we could come up with a new genre name. Just sayin…
This film has already been made:
“Goodbye Uncle Tom” aka. Addio Zio Tom
QT will be back when he returns to writing crime.
Didn’t Lawrence Bender produce Pulp Fiction?
