Nice Week 3 bump for ABC’s midseason comedy series Happy Endings (2.1/5 in adults 18-49). After falling 30% in its move from 9:30 PM to 10 PM last Wednesday, the new comedy bounced back, up 17% in the demo from last week. And that despite the fact that its lead-in, Cougar Town (2.1/5), was down 9% from last week as it followed a repeat Modern Family vs. an original last Wednesday. Happy Ending also held 100% of its Cougar Town lead-in vs. 75% last week. The only other original offering on ABC was freshman Better With You (1.5/4) at 8:30 PM, which was down a tenth from last week when it aired behind a new The Middle.
Fox (5.8/16 in 18-49, 18.2 million) once again dominated the night with American Idol (6.9/19), which was up a tenth in the demo from last Wednesday’s fast national number (the reality juggernaut is always adjusted up in the finals, so vs. that it was down 3%). Idol was also on par with the comparable telecast last season. New Fox comedy Breaking In (2.6/6) was flat with its fast national rating last week and up 4% vs. the final.
CBS’ Survivor: Redemption Island (3.0/9), even with its fast national demo result and down 3% from the final, was followed by reruns of Criminal Minds and Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior. NBC aired an NBC News Royal Wedding special (1.2/3) and a rerun of the promising two-hour premiere of The Voice (2.1/5), which got good additional sampling going into Week 2. And, airing against the final half-hour of Idol, it fared much better in the ratings than virtually all NBC dramas do in first-run.

Happy Endings is hysterical and after an okay first episodes the newer ones have been getting better and better. Hope it’s renewed for another season.
FINALLY some good news. Happy Endings is the only genuinely funny sitcom of the season.
A 2.1 for a repeat on NBC up against American Idol is phenomenal.
Word of mouth at work for Happy Endings
The Voice is here to stay.
And Nellie, where is our pilot buzz for this week?
Good for Happy Endings! At first, I was suspicious about the show but after watching just 2 episodes, I’m hooked! It’s refreshing to watch a sitcom that flows quickly, features great comedic acting, and shows just the right amount of edginess! Hope it continues to do well. I’m in!
Good to hear. I bailed after the first show but based on comments seen here, I’ll give the show another try.
Oh come on. Is it me or are the producers of Happy Endings posting A LOT here. The show is solid, not quite the genius they’re describing.
Yay for Happy Endings! I really hope it gets picked up for next season. I love Casey Wilson and am glad to see her on another show. I really like Eliza Coupe and now Elisha Cuthbert.
Most of these Happy Endings posts sound suspiciously like PR flackery. Zach, seriously?
Nice job Happy Endings!
Breaking In and Happy endings should both get a second season. Both are great and the ratings are solid. Happy Endings has big laughs for sure IMO. Breaking In moves really fast and is fun, plus the cast is really working. Fox got lucky there because I’m sure they had nothing to do with its success.
I also was on the fence about this show after the first episode, but pretty much love it now. It definitely gets funnier with each episode, and hope it comes back next season!
Finally! Been waiting for a “Friends”-ish young ensemble comedy that is actually FUNNY. Charming cast and I enjoy their silly antics. The Wayans kid is a stand out. ABC-order some more episodes please.
i’m really shocked and saddened that better with you did not benefit from its best episode ever since the pilot airing after dancing with the stars.
This is actually the first time that is saw abc air promos for all of their comedies which is something that they should be doing if they want to emulate the must see tv that nbc had because that’s how they promoted their shows as a whole night.
So… let me get this straight: there may be a Happy Ending to this story after all?
Sorry, just not a Happy Endings fan. It feels so generic to me. ABC has to take more risks like with Modern Family. Happy Endungs feels a lot like a retread.
Does Breaking In get picked up with a 2.6/6? I really hope so. It’s actually my new favorite show which says something cause I expect NOTHING fro Fox’s bad comedies. Who knew Slater is actually funny???
Breaking In is great creatively which surprised me. The numbers are solid for a Fox comedy (not saying much). This will get picked up for sure with those numbers. Kinda crazy that Fox launched 2 comedies this year (Breaking In and Raising Hope). Is their curse lifted???
There is nothing “promising” about NBC’s “The Voice.” It will sink fast due to the over-bearing weight of its awfulness.
Happy Endings was up against repeats…of course the ratings went up. Why is everybody freaking out?
ABC’s PR has a hardcore group of posters here. Try saying something bad about Cougar Town – it’s like chumming sharks.
“Happy Endings” is great, I hope it keeps building a decent audience.
And “The voice” was such a nice surprise! It’s impressive that so many people saw the rerun.
Okay, okay. We get it. All the writers/producers on Happy Endings are posting like mad. We get it, you want the show to do well. Try making the scripts better next year instead of attacking the message boards.
I have watched every episode and I think Happy Endings is really funny. Its my favorite of the new “bunch of friends” comedies for sure. Shows used to get a chance to build an audience. Now any dip in audience can be a call for cancellation. And Happy Endings is having to build their audience at 10PM which still doesn’t seem like a good place to put a 1/2 hour comedy but looks like people are tuning in!
God, I wish American Idol would just finish.
This season with the judges has been beyond bad, worse than the previous ones.
And honestly, none of the contestants will become american idols, nor will they be the next big thing. It’s one of those morbid pleasures that makes tv worse.
Well, I got into BETTER OFF TED late. I’ll give this show a try. Worse things than watching Elisha Cuthbert for half an hour.
HAPPY ENDINGS is great! Look. Forward towards Wednesday! I really hope I see a renewal
