It got ugly for CBS last night when, in its second outing, midseason dramedy Chaos (0.9/3 in 18-49, 5.6 million viewers) fell 18% from its underwhelming premiere to finish a distant fourth at 8 PM in adults 18-49, behind a Kitchen Nightmares repeat on Fox. Chaos also pushed down CSI: NY (1.6/5, off 11%, 9.4 million) and Blue Bloods (1.5/4, down 12%, 10.3 million). As a result, despite Shark Tank (1.2/4) slipping 9% from last week, ABC’s unscripted lineup (1.4/4, 4.7 million) edged CBS’ scripted series (1.3/4, 8.5 million) in 18-49 for No. 1. In doing so, ABC hit a 13-week high on the night in 18-49. The season finale of NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are (1.3/4, 5.8 million) held steady and won the 8 PM hour in both 18-49 and total viewers. NBC (1.3/4, 5.6 million) was tied with CBS for second place in 18-49. Fox and the CW aired repeats.

The defenders is looking pretty good right now.
Let’s be honest…
CBS has got something against CHAOS. Maybe one of the EP’s are shouting at Les about publicity, or maybe they want one of the actors to lead up another one of their other series in the Fall?
Or maybe they’re just trying to placate Brett Ratner (doubtful)?
Either way, the show deserves a new night… and some actual promos.
That’s it. I’ve tried _Chaos_ twice and I find my mind drifting all the time. I quit. I think I can see CBS’s reasoning behind this show – _CHUCK_. They wanted to create an action comedy that attracts a cult and media following. I love _Chuck_, but _Chaos_ is missing the magic that makes _Chuck_ work. It just feels to me like a bunch of frat boys who never grew up trying to be spys. Red Forman, err, Kurtwood Smith’s character is no General Beckham. Just MHO though.
Nailed it!
Agreed. The tone of the show is all over the place. Is it a comedy? Is it a drama? Is it “Chuck?” Is it “The Agency?” “The Unit?” I’ll tell you what it is. It’s toast.
That’s amazing that CHAOS is turning out to be CBS’s 1st Turkey since Viva Laughlin. Considering how much trouble CBS had trying to get the show from FOX, I wonder if they are going to let the remaining 11 episodes air.
First turkey since Viva Laughlin? What about 11th Hour? The Ex List? Harper’s Island? Worst Week? Welcome to the Captain? Three Rivers?
Where have you been?
Okay Dude, I forgot about the others. But, I only compared it to Viva Laughlin because the ratings are just as bad as it, if not worse.
But, 11th Hour lasted 18 episodes (a full season) and got over 10M viewers every week.
Well, it looks like The Defenders will be getting the renewal after all.
And yes, I agree with
Damn that Chaos. I wouldn’t be surprised if CBS pulls it from the schedule this week.
There’ll be a press release Monday no doubt.
Defenders is looking good. Characters you root for.
I really liked CBS Fridays with Defenders, CSI NY, and Blue Bloods. Chaos needs off the schedule.
People please, accept the cold hard fact that even if Jim Belushi turned into a bloated goose that lays golden CBS omelettes, there is no chance, no plausible way in hell, that the Defenders is coming back. Ever!
This show is like CHUCK, but for smart people. Unforunately, the smart people demographic is in the minority these days and therein not profitable.
Smart People? Whoever wrote these scripts seems not to have an iota of imagination and literary ability to write a decent spy/thriller/comedy script. I can no longer read after 5:30-6:00 due to eye problems, but if I could, and wanted something of this genre at 8 on Fridays, I’d pick up a book by ?Koontz?, Deaver, Kellerman, Patterson, Clancy, Doyle, Christie, among so many others
The Defenders seemed to be hitting their stride where the characters actually looked like they had a decent time working with each other. I also liked the addition of the sleazy private eye that joined their team.
this show is doomed. let’s face it, unless you’re a CSI clone, you’re not gonna get any luv from CBS or the viewers. plus the main character is a mexican. good luck with that.
It should work. It doesn’t. Unfortunate because its such a good cast
No, Avi… Smart people are reading books on a Friday night, not watching Chaos.
Nothing about it is for smart people. Freddie is a supporting actor, not a lead or magnetic or involving. The plots are paper thin and without twist and written by someone who has never read a good spy novel, much less did any research. Eric Close is a great TV actor totally wasted here. The main characters are underdeveloped and uninvolving – the most appealing is the “human weapon” which is a one-trick pony. How many times does it need to be pointed out what a hack talentless fraud Ratter is?
Wow, forgot about all of those. Thanks for bringing back some bad memories.
I liked the pilot of CHAOS. It wasn’t perfect but few pilots are. It has a good cast and a nice tone. It doesn’t seem like a CBS show and it also seems like CBS doesn’t know how to market it. It is meant to appeal to a younger audience than the 50+ yr olds that are watching that particular night on CBS. I don’t think the lead is a problem nor his nationality as someone alluded to here. I hope they give it a shot though in someways I see it belonging on another network and I do agree… the spy part and the character development will need to be dealt with if they are to have any shot at even airing the remaining episodes. Don’t bring back THE DEFENDERS, it has Jim Belushi and he’s evil…
Why the heck is blue bloods still on friday nights? Its the only CBS show i dont fall asleep to but i have to dvr it all the time.
Well looks like CBS had a reason not to plug this show in promos; they didn’t believe in it from the start.
I like CHAOS, the second episode did a good job of character development and demonstrating the writers aren’t locking themselves into a formula. Pilot was more comedic…second episode more drama. Tightly written and an hour that flew by too quickly. I just couldn’t get into the Defenders, and now I’m watching CBS on Friday because of CHAOS. The only other CBS shows I watch are NCIS and The Mentalist. Tired of formulaic crime dramas and reality shows. CHAOS was given the short end of the stick in terms of publicity channels (too limited to tech, not enought talk show apperances). The cast is good and clearly play well off each other. CHAOS shows promise of being another breakthrough show, if given a better time slot.
Smart people don’t watch network TV. There are maybe 2 shows that would fit their bill, all the rest are just bad
