It was another sad Monday ratings performance for NBC, which hit another season low on the night with all original programming. Chuck (1.3/4) was even with last week, tying its series low. But it also delivered NBC’s highest demo rating last night. The Event (1.1/3) was down 13% from its last original two weeks ago for a series low. And the relaunch of Law & Order: Los Angeles continues to sputter. In its second week since the series’ return last Monday, the Law & Order spinoff drew a 1.1/3, down a steep 27% from the two-hour midseason premiere last week. Such an underwhelming performance bodes well for David E. Kelley’s Harry’s Law, which did better in the slot earlier this midseason.
ABC’s Dancing With the Stars performance show (3.9/11) was down 13% from last week to rank as the lowest-rated spring performance telecast ever for the venerable reality franchise. In its special airing after Dancing, a new Cougar Town (2.3/6) was down 15% from its last original Feb. 2. Proving that comedy series do better in a block, even with a weaker lead-in, that last original followed a Modern Family repeat. The first of a slew of specials about the upcoming Royal Wedding, ABC News: William & Catherine: A Modern Fairytale, averaged a 1.7/4 at 10 PM.
CBS’ newly sold in syndication Hawaii Five-0 (2.6/7) was one of only two series on the Big 4 to post a ratings gain last night, up 4% in the demo from last week, as the procedural dominated the 10 PM hour with guest star Sean Combs. How I Met Your Mother (2.5/8) was down 7% from last week to tie its series low. Midseason comedy Mad Love (1.9/5) was flat, followed by a Two and Half Men rerun (2.0/5), which was down a tenth from its performance at 9:30 PM last week, and Mike & Molly (2.5/6), which was flat with its tryout in the tentpole 9 PM slot last week.
The farewell episode of Amber Tamblyn on Fox’s House (3.2/9) was even with the medical drama’s demo rating last week, while The Chicago Code (1.9/5) joined Hawaii Five-0 in the black ratings column, up 6% from last week.
The CW’s Monday lineup had a strong return after a month-and-a-half-long hiatus. 90210 (1.7 million, 1.0/3 in 18-34) was up 21% in total viewers and 43% in 18-34 from its last original Feb. 28. Gossip Girl (1.5 million, 1.0/3) was up 7% and 25%, respectively.

It’s amazing to me (a non-pro)that the networks have not yet figured out that dribbling out original episodes with spaces of several weeks in between them is jarring to everyone but the most loyal viewers. That kind of programming combined with moving shows around from slot to slot contributes to a steady decline in ratings. It’s amusing that renewals for shows like “Harry’s Law” become more likely based on the fact its ratings are tumbling but not as steeply as other shows.
BULLETIN: There is NO Easter Bunny. There is NO tooth fairy. There is NO Santa Claus— and the networks are not the viewers friend.
Tooth Fairy? I’ve got an Uncle I’m not sure about
I agree, I find it completely frustrating to follow some of these shows. I had to look some up on tv.com to see if they were even scheduled to have more episodes. This one week on, two weeks off stuff is frustrating lol.
To be fair, you people would be slamming a long hiatus in between a single season like you did with The Event and Flash Forward. The networks can’t win. What do you want? One, single long hiatus in between a single season or multiple breaks every 3-5 episodes? I much prefer the former.
Needless to say, Bob Greenblatt really has his work cut out for him. Very weird that Chuck’s demos have plummeted from a steady 2.0. It’s historically had a loyal audience.
Yes, we Chuck fans are a very loyal audience but at the same time I can’t fault the people who are getting so frustrated by the erratic pre-emptions of both Chuck and The Event for filler and/or outright creative disasters like The Cape. It’s odd to me that a show that got a 24-episode order for this season has been airing *new* episodes sporadically the last month and a half or so. IMO, the show is hitting a creative highmark this season that looks to have the potential to be at least as good next season, but no show can be expected to generate any viewing momentum when the network keeps interrupting the run.
And you’d think that NBC would have learned the lesson from its sister channel, USA, regarding uninterrupted runs. 7, 10, 12 episodes straight of no repeats and no-pre-emptions. With the only exception being for a holiday. That’s waaay better than 3 weeks on, then a repeat, then a pre-emption, then 2 or 3 or 4 episodes on again.
No surprise that LOLA slipped in viewers this week. After the surprisingly well done revamped primere, this episode fell back to ripped from the headlines storyline (with gun play)and the usual Dick Wolf hefty dose of preaching.
I’m sticking with SVU.
What a night.Except for Dancing with stars and House ,all the shows did horrible. Even what CBS calls a “big hit” ,Hawaii five-o got a 2.6 and not even 11 million viewers, which is pathetic when you consider it has no competition at all.
When does NBC acknowledge they made a mistake by canceling the original L&O and bring it back? LOLA is crap!
Did you watch last season of L&O? Now *that* was complete crap. The cases were such garbage, and so far beyond their jurisdiction as to be laughable. McCoy going after the Bush administration was just precious. At least the cases in NOLA are believable.
LOLA’s doing badly because it has crap lead-ins. It’s a very good show. But the one-two whifs of “Chuck” and “The (total non-) Event” as lead-ins? Not even “Friends” could’ve survived that!
The geniuses who schedule NBC seemed to have learned no lessons from the “now-it’s-on-this-day-now it’s-on-that-day” debacle that killed off “Heroes.”
Mad Love is such a great show and I hope that CBS considers that if Mother was not collapsing, it would be doing better.
Next week, ABC is trying Better with you after dancing — with guest star Derek Hough from Dancing with the stars. Hope this solidifies that Castle is a hit after dancing.
Cool for the Chicago Code behind a dying House (lost 300 000 viewers at least)…and total loss for the season is about 20 %?
Also for those not in on this little boycott. NO ABC for cancelling AMC & OLTL> Our Soaps.
I hope NBC finally dumps ‘Chuck’. It’s losing viewers and it certainly isn’t going to gain any new ones next season. Great cast, good premise, not a hit show. Dump it.
Also, NBC’s best bet is pull all remaining new eps of LOLA and hold them for next season.
Sure you can say it “dipped” from it’s premiere but with The Event’s 3.75 millions viewers as a lead in is there any wonder why it didn’t pull huge numbers? Can’t we also give credit that LOLA had INCREASE the number of viewers by appx. 50% from it’s lead in and bested ‘Chuck’ as well making LOLA NBC’s highest rated of the night. Pull it and bring it back in the Fall with a stronger line-up and build a base. You’re killing it here.
Also, ABC really needs to revisit the name “Cougar Town” because people DO think it’s a show about Courtney Cox being a “cougar” in her “town”. The show is hilarious and they need to change the name and give it a great push for the Emmy. If truth be told, although it would be a tricky thing to pull off, I think if they reconfigured it into a traditional sitcom with an audience it would get better ratings. The single cam doesn’t bring in viewers.
I agree canceling the original L & O was a big mistake, but LOLA’s got some great actors, and I for one, will continue to tune in for the rest of the season. I like stories set in LA.
J J – how can you defend The Event? It is utter garbage. It’s nothing but cell phone calls and bad acting. It is unwatchable to the point of being painful. It started out okay but it has steadily declined. ANd they have some pretty doll gern good actors over there and they have to say this stuff? Very very sad.
Here’s another reason to not watch NBC: The unending & incessant promos for The Voice.
Enough already!
I knew after one episode, that “The Event” was not to be in my future.
Yes, NBC’s IDIOTIC programming of shows defies common sense. Original episode, two repeats, original episode, repeats…NBC, what rocket scientists do you have working for you??? I know you’re playing around for sweeps, but don’t you realize that in the meantime, you’re hemorrhaging viewers weekly??????
And WTF is this winter vacation crap? Nobody in their right mind, thinks it’s a good idea to introduce a new show, THEN TAKE A THREE MONTH BREAK!!!!!!
Sheesh.
Even though he was barely in the ep, I think Chicago Code can thank Chicago disc jockey Mancow for their bump. I’m sure he pimped it relentlessly on his morning radio show
I watched the first 8 episodes of LOLA and thought that the actors were all fine but the stories were just meh. Ironically, the kill off my favorite actor who actually had chemistry with Stoll and gave a realistic performance. They replaced him with the ADA in a ridiculous change of jobs story that was laughable and Molina looks nothing like a cop. Now he eclipsed Stoll on screen and relegates him to the sidelines. This whole show should be sprayed with gang gunfire. I preferred the first season even with the cheezy stories
