It was a brutal night all around with most shows hitting lows, but it was especially disappointing for NBC, whose heavily promoted relaunch of Law & Order: LA bombed, drawing a paltry 1.5/4 among adults 18-49 for its two-hour premiere and 6 million viewers. That was down 32% from LOLA‘s most original telecast on Dec. 1 before its retooling hiatus. Leading into LOLA was Chuck (1.3/4), which also didn’t help its renewal chances by slipping 13% from its most recent original March 21 to a series low.
CBS’ lineup also hit the skids. How I Met Your Mother (2.7/8) was down 10% from March 21 for a season low. Mad Love (1.9.5) was also down 10% for a series low. As it contemplates a future without Two and a Half Men or with a Charlie Sheen-less Men, the network tried out freshman Mike & Molly(2.5/6) in the tentpole Monday 9 PM slot last night. The sitcom was down 17% from its most recent original at 9:30 PM for a series low but still ranked as the highest-rated CBS program in 18-49. Following a Men repeat (2.0/5), a new Hawaii Five-0 (2.4/6) was also down 17% from March 21 for a series low, and it was trounced by ABC’s Castle (3.1/8) in the 10 PM hour. Castle was the only series in a positive territory last night, up 11% from last week, but its fast national numbers are always inflated by a Dancing With the Stars overrun. Speaking of Dancing(4.3/12), the performance show featuring another Kirstie Alley mishap was down 9% from last week. ABC easily won the night in 18-49 (3.9/10) and total viewers (17.9 million).
Fox’s House episode, featuring the return of cast member Olivia Wilde (3.2/9), was down 6% from March 21 for a season low. The Chicago Code (1.8/5) was flat with its last original March 21 to tie its series low.

Shame about “House”- best episode of the season, IMO
Hawaii Five 0 ratings are going down every single week.
Series low rating this week!
Hawaii Five 0 is quickly becoming Hawaii Five Uh-Oh.
Part of what makes the L&O franchise so great is that we don’t always get a happy ending (i.e. the killer goes free), and I’m ok with that. However, regardless of the retooling of the show, I can’t believe that they would have one of the main characters murdered and then have the climax of the show be that the killer went free. I was extremely disapointed and annoyed that they went this route, and I sincerely hope that they eventually (sooner rather than later), give closure to this in an upcoming episode.
I actually tried to watch Chuck but gave up when the screen clutter advertising some reality show became so distracting that I lost all interest in the plot. I don’t know why the networks still haven’t figured out that they are driving away their viewers with their “all advertising/all the time” policy, but until they show some respect for their audience, they are going to continue to be disappointed.
Get used to it. They have to find a way to get around DVR FFWD’ing. So, ads at the bottom of the screen for their shows is the most obvious way to do it.
Watch on Hulu. You have to wait a day, but no clutter.
The killer had to go free to provide a strong enough motivation for Alfred Molina’s character to quit the DA’s office and become a cop again.
It was such a forced storyline it was hard to watch….bad writing especially the last 15 minutes of the first LOLA episode. The showdown between Morales and Coyote was BAD in an embarressing way. I felt badly for the actors who had to say the lines.
Switching Molina to cop is a horrible decision. He looks so out of place there. His mannerisms and physical appearance look nothing like a cop and he did not mesh well with TJ.
The whole plot was ridiculous and I just can’t invest any more of my time in this mess.
I thought this was one of the better episodes of L&O in many years. The acting was superb and the story gave us a good bad guy: Cesar es El Diablo Snake Feet. He will get his. You can guarantee it. (unless the show gets canceled before they get around to that story again!) watch this show, people!
Are you by any chance involved in this show? Here’s a prediction: The series won’t be around long enough to get back to this story.
I actually agree. The first episode was the best L&O I’ve seen in years as well. But the second episode… not so much. Couldn’t keep my attention for more than 20 minutes. And that’s the problem. NBC needs to learn that 4 month hiatus are a death wish for shows. It makes me angry that just when The Event was starting to pick up some steam, they take it off the air for three months. They could learn a thing or two from the people who work for them now that used to work for 24.
Law and Order LA is nothing compared to Law and Order UK. It doesn’t even feel like a Law and Order show.
Law & Order U.K. is a superb show.
It’s over. LOLA is DOA.
It was a great ride but Wolf and C don;t have anything new or relevant to say. Hit the gavel and close this sad case.
I don’t know if they are out of new material but they are certainly out of GOOD new material.
This is why mid season breaks that last several weeks are a bad idea. People discover other things to do with their time and they forget when shows are coming back.
You’d think the networks would have figured this out by now.
Is Law and Order heavily promoted? Had I not stumbled upon it, I would have had no idea the show was on. I did enjoy it though. Hope they can rally some viewers.
I don’t watch shows on my TV, for the most part, so I missed the fact that the premiere was on – caught the last 45 minutes. Enjoyed it, but more of the same. Will its failure lead to more @#*#@ reality @#*@ from NBC??????
NBC needs to run more Internet ads.
Might want to check your CBS notes. How is Mike & Molly CBS’ #1 show of the night among the demo with a 2.5/6 if How I Met Your Mother earned a 2.7/8.
Actually, it states that Mike and Molly was the highest-rated CBS program in viewers aged 18-49, which we all know is the only group programmers care about.
Chicago Code’s episode was great last night. If they re-air over the summer and go straight into a fall pickup it could break out into a huge hit. Audiences just need a chance to realize it’s better than the average cop show.
VERY interesting show; and Delroy Lindo is amazing and incredibly nuanced as the villain “corrupt pol” who emanates humanity even as he is running a far reaching criminal enterprise which in the end harms the very people he clearly desires to serve. Facinating.
I loved the relaunch of LO:LA. Thought the second episode was better than the first. I expected a bit more grittiness to Skeet’s death, it felt very 80s inspired, but Alfred Molina was fantastic.
I agree with TBag. I thought both LOLA episodes were good, and the cast changes were good. Will definitely keep watching. Don’t let me down, Dick Wolf.
I thought both episodes were an improvement over the earlier incarnation of L&O LA. The writing was much better. I hope NBC doesn’t make any quick decision. I don’t watching Dancing with the Stars so I need an alternative that night.
Jennifer Beals is absolutely tearing it up on “The Chicago Code.” Amazing role and actress.
Thanx for telling us the ending to LOA! Now I have another reason not to give this has-been show a chance! You couldnt shut up about it, huh, people?
STILL WATCH IT!!! It was really good, and there are more twists and turns throughout the episode
Well, if you haven’t gotten around to watching your DVR’d shows then it’s probably a good idea (nay- common sense) to avoid blogs and comment sections relating to it.
That being said, I thought LOLA was a vast improvement compared to the earlier episodes and FAR better than the past 4 seasons of SVU (which is now essentially a sex crimes comedy- who writes that dialogue?). I liked how Detective Skeet’s death was left open ended, or else it might’ve ended up like a clone of George Dzundza’s character’s death early in the L&O series and it makes a great place to come back to later on- if the show lasts that long.
Series lows for H50. I hope it’s cheap to film in Hawaii…only 9 million viewers? Great for Castle.
Nothing is cheap in Hawaii.
Every week it seems like Chuck hits a new series low. How much longer is NBC going to bother with this show?
cbs wants sheen back asap. they normally do 14-15 at 9 with men. they did an 8 with mike and molly. it brought their whole night down.
like or dislike sheen or men… doesn’t matter… business-wise and that’s that all you should be thinking… sheen and/or men need to be back
not even a question anymore
RE: LOLA..perhaps they shoulda’ retooled behind the scenes….meaning directors ..producers..Jankowski ..Misiano.. and the douche bag—what’s her name… in any event… what people don’;t understand is the casting process…they have names in mind but they send out a list to agencies and whomever bites is a contender…all politics…while Alfred Molina is a superb actor…Terence Howard is in it for the paycheck..horrible casting…. let’s face it this is a procedural sho wand if one finds a character ala’ characters interesting…they will watch! duh?
LOLA did worse than The Cape, the only interesting show on NBC. The problem with LOLA was that L+O always had a major costar, which was NYC. The best episodes were always the ones that took advantage of NYC as a backdrop. If you are not really going to invest a good part of the production in trying to get a grip on an LA look – which is hard because LA really has no “look” the way NYC or Boston or San Francisco do. The other problem were the stars. Something about them just never rang true. In the very beginning we knew just about nothing about the lives of the series regulars but cared about them and it seems the more they became “fleshed out” the less interesting they became.
The other stuff – there is very little that cant be bettered by netflix or have its choice moments checked out on youtube the next day.
TOTALLY AGREE with most of your points! But there’s such a rich history and distinct pre World War 2 architecture look to most of DOWNTOWN Los Angeles, and the rest has high rises and bustling blocks… definitely be the CITY they need to be based in. Downtown LA could give them all the grit and grime of a seedy city, but still be a beautiful backdrop. Head out to the beach to investigate a lead or find a body… but Downtown LA is the backbone I think the show’s missing. And the fact that Skeet was just a bit too pretty to win over the straight male audience. If he was over 200 pounds with a mustache and a gut, no problem. But LO fans arent’ tuning in to see a pretty boy solve the case… plain and simple. Just a total mis-step from start to finish– which is too bad. Downtown could give them just what they’re missing… a pulse on LA.
It seems like Chuck, Mad Love, LOLA, The Chicago Code and Hawaii-50 won’t be with us next season.
As a L&O fan who was much disappointed by the initial episodes of L&O-LA , I was pleasantly surprised by the revamp/relaunch. I liked that the writers finally realized that LA is not like other cities – we have a lot of open space (fields, hillsides etc.) and setting part of the story in a weed filled ravine was great. And Alfred Molina is excellent (as always). Also, Rachel Ticotin was great in last night’s episode. That’s another great thing about L&O-LA it has a very diverse cast that looks like the Real America. I am optimistic about the future of the show – hope it attracts more viewers.
LOLA was horrible and Molina as a cop is just awkward. No chemistry with Stoll who needs to regrow the ‘stache, it was the only thing with personality in some episodes.
Is anybody surprised that “Chuck” isn’t doing well? It has never done well. Not ever. It has a smallish group of very devoted fans that lobby for the show’s renewal every year. I’ve never seen the show, but I have a friend who loves it, so for her, I hope it lasts. But the show is not a hit, not close to a hit, never has been, and I can’t imagine it ever will be.
I agree, the terrible numbers for “LOLA” prove that Dick Wolf is a big loser (so long as you ignore the twenty seasons of the first hit show, and the ongoing success of SVU).
Considering the garbage that NBC has put out in the last 5 years, NBC is lucky to have such a devoted audience, even if it is “smallish.” That network needs all the loyalty it can muster right now, and cancelling Chuck would be the nail in the coffin as far as my viewing habits are concerned. There is literally nothing else worth watching on NBC right now, and that’s something Comcast had better be working hard on.
I have to agree with this. Chuck is the ONLY show on NBC that I watch. I’m not a crazy, rabid fan, but I would be very disappointed and disaffected and what not by NBC’s utter idiocy.
Hawaii Five-o was never a hit . The show started with 14 million viewers and 3.9 demo, then losing numbers week after week and now it was getting just 10 Million viewers and 2.8 demo.Viewers left the show long time ago.It is very lame. The show was just lucky to be in the same night as Two ans a Half man. With Two and a Half man gone, just a 2.4 demo.
And how many fat jokes can u take??
CBS better hope for new better shows for Mondays nights, or they better get used to the bad numbers.
H50 got 9 million and a 2.4 (not 10 mill/ 2.8). It really had no competition last night. I would definitely not consider Castle a good show or a threat to any other quality show. I predict H50 will continue to drop.
You do know that HFO has consistently got the same demos as The Mentalist right? it’s demo beats every single other new ten pm drama that CBS has launched. You guys are mad on here.
It has had one bad week. And you might not like Castle or consider it competition but it is ABC’s number one ten pm drama and along with The Mentalist AND HFO one of the only three ten pm dramas this season to be pulling high 2′s in the demo. Overall viewers are irrelevant. But yeah this week was mucho bad for HFO.
But then again when Castle didn’t have DWTS as a lead in it could only pull 2.3′s. Which shows that the ONLY ten pm drama any channel has that can regularly pull high 2′s and low 3′s is The Mentalist.
