UPDATE 2 PM: The final numbers for last night are in, and Parenthood went up a tenth to a 2.1 in 18-49, so The Good Wife finished third in the 10 PM hour among 18-49. Also going up a tenth were NCIS, The Biggest Loser, the Dancing with the Stars result show and the premiere of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.
PREVIOUS: OK, I give up rationalizing the ratings performance of CBS’ The Good Wife. What was one of the show’s strongest episodes last night, packed with drama and featuring several name guest stars — America Ferrera, Fred Thompson, Ana Gasteyer and Hugo Chavez (if you’ve seen the episode, you’ll get it) – did a 2.0/5 in adults 18-49 (10.9 million total viewers), flat with last week in 18-49 and tied with NBC’s Parenthood for second place in the 10 PM hour. It finished behind ABC’s rookie Body of Proof (2.5/7, 11.2 million), which is making a case for renewal, up a tenth (4%) in the demo from last week. Parenthood also was up a tenth (5%) from last week, so The Good Wife, which has been building for months to last night’s election episode, was the only 10 PM show not to get a boost in the demo (it was up in viewers by 100,000). CBS (3.0/8, 15.2 million) still won the night with solid performances from NCIS (3.8/12, 19.2 million), even with last week in the demo, and NCIS: LA (3.3/9, 15.3 million), down 6%.
ABC’s Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution (1.4/4, 5.3 million) was off to a slow start for its second season, down 36% in the demo from its series premiere last spring and on par and even slightly lower than what No Ordinary Family was doing in the 8 PM slot. In total viewers, it was the show’s second-most-watched telecast, but the series’ first season aired on Friday. The Dancing With the Stars result show (3.0/8, 15.5 million) was down 6% from last week. NBC’s The Biggest Loser (2.6/7) was down 7% from last week.

I can’t figure out “The Good Wife’s” flat performance either. They promo’d it incessantly during NCIS and the storyline about Kalinda’s one-night stand with Peter has been pretty compelling. In terms of keeping production staff employed though, last night turned out perfectly. Now it’s likely all three shows will be back in the fall.
“Parenthood” is absolutely terrific, far and away the best scripted hour on the nets. I’ll die a little if NBC doesn’t renew it. My DVR will have almost all cable and a few net comedies, mostly NBC Thursday night, plus “Modern Family.”
I stopped watching The Good Wife months ago. I still consider it a great, great show – I’m just a Parenthood watcher. Love that show.
Listen up NBC – people love Parenthood. Don’t piss us off and not bring it back next fall.
We absolutely LOVE Parenthood! It’s one of the smartest shows on TV!Like JasonTHX said,Don’t piss us off!#SeeyouintheFallParenthood!
I don’t get it –= every time I try to watch Parenthood it is painfully written, just maudlin. Truly crappy TV. Who watches it?
I’m not a huge Good Wife fan but by comparison it is certainly far better written and acted.
I think viewers, especially females, are switching back and forth between Body of Proof and The Good Wife, and this week was Body of Proofs turn. These two shows attract the same audience and it’s a shame they’re competing. Body of Proof should be on another night. I’d watch both. I’m more vested in Good Wife so am watching that one for the moment but really liked the premier and special Sunday show (episode 2) of Body of Proof. Why do the networks do that? Compete for the same audience, same night, same time?? Dumb.
I’m not sure why Good Wife can’t get traction with the demo, but it’s worth noting that it routinely pulls in over 10 million TOTAL viewers compared to Parenthood’s 5 million or so.
Both Good Wife and Blue Bloods have the same problem: They have strong followings outside the 18-49 demo. While it’s important to advertisers, it’s basically telling 4/5′s of viewers that their spending money is meaningless. There must be a way that networks can make money off of their total viewer ratings so that they’re more willing to keep shows that are watched by a large number of viewers even if they’re younger than 18 or older than 49. In this fragmented TV marketplace, I think any show that can pull in at least 10 million viewers should be up for automatic renewal.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s ridiculous that a show that is obviously very popular among those outside the 18-49 demographic (and I’m going to surmise that it’s popular among middle class/upper middle class viewers) is being talked about as a potential cancellation. I really hope CBS continues to invest their support in The Good Wife which, along with The Chicago Code, is the best drama on network TV.
Parenthood is phenomenal! Last night was a great episode and next weeks finale looks about 100 times better (if thats possible). I cant wait for next season!
DUH … it’s because there’s 3 good shows on at the same time … why don’t they spread the love … put one or two on Wednesday or Thursday at 10pm, where there’s nothing decent to watch! Body of Proof isn’t in the same league as Good Wife and Parenthood, it’s just new and people are fickle.
Back in the 90′s, I boycotted ABC for three years after they dumped both China Beach and, a few years later, Once and Again (which they showed no love for by switching its time slot ever three weeks or so). They were two of the finest dramas I had ever seen and ABC gave them no respect.
I more than prepared to do the same with NBC if they cancel Parenthood.
LOL, and you think ABC noticed that you weren’t watching for a while? The only one you hurt was yourself by missing out on their programming for several years. NBC won’t give a crap if you boycott either!
Nice job ABC PR. “Missing out on their programing?” I for one find a bunch of has been hacks mucking their way through the foxtrot while some crappy band does the worst job covering whatever song these hacks are limping to to be riveting television don’t you? I know ABC is not a total wash but I’m just saying. You don’t have to be on the job every second of every day.
I wouldn’t say there was much to watch on ABC during those years… good on you for finding something better to do.
“NBC won’t give a crap if you boycott either!”
Actually they will, especially if you’re vocal about it.
The Good Wife = Boring
Body o’ ‘poof’ come the Fall. Just insulting writing.
The Good Wife and The Chicago Code are two of the best series on television. Get with it America, tune in for goodness sake!
Exactly! Parenthood is the first show since Once and Again to capture that amazing multi-character ensemble family drama that made Once and Again so great. I love the Good Wife too (Thank technology for dual tuner DVRs) but Parenthood has the special place in my heart that Once and Again occupied for all of it’s three years and still does to this day.
NBC does have some good will with me in recent years since it managed to keep another gem Friday Night Lights going for five seasons (even though burying it on Friday nights and using the title as the excuse was kind of lame) so I will stay hopeful for Parenthood. ABC on the other hand is still on my shit list.
As for the American TV viewers, I am constantly wringing my hands over what they will or won’t watch. Most great shows especially if they are not procedurals seem to have a bear of a time attracting an audience. It’s been the case for over a decade now. So I’m at a loss for an explanation. And no, I don’t consider The Good Wife to be a procedural.
‘The Good Wife’ is amazing – compelling performances and wonderful writing. Tim Guinee was excellent last night – he just couldn’t let it go. Lovely chemistry too between Alan Cumming and America Ferrera.
I heart Parenthood!! What an amazing show last night!! This show surpasses any other – I used to watch GoodWife but it is sooo slow and someone recommended Parenthood and I’ve been hooked ever since – Even went back and had a parenhood marathon when I bought the first season a few months back!
I loved the Good Wife, so much so that I never watched the other shows in that time slot. But they have lost me with the absurd story line of the past few episodes. The “big secret” that Alicia’s husband had a one-nighter with Kalinda? Why would this shock anyone, he was doing much worse and everyone has seen it on video. How about the investigator in his Columbo-style rumpled clothes, accosting Alicia in her law office, then showing up at the election party where, for no good reason, Alicia is sitting in an empty room by herself, while her children, husband, and mother in law celebrate. In the real world, there are security guards at high powered law offices, and certainly around elected officials. The Hugo Chavez plot was ridiculous, and the female Judge flirting with Fred Thompson was silly too. What a waste of great acting talent, they need some good writing!
CBS, I beg you to put *the full two seasons* of The Good Wife on some kind of platform like Hulu or Netflix or even (Time Warner Cable) on Demand so I can catch up on it this summer. All networks need to be doing this kind of stuff for these sorts of critically praised but underperforming series. I get the need to monetize your hits, but struggling shows need every exposure they can get.
I think they have made a wrong turn in the plot line with fan favorite, Kalinda. It was not a plus to bring in the competing investigator (who’s hopefully gone by now) and I can’t imagine any fans would be happy with the Kalinda/Peter affair story. I know I’m not. Procedural dramas often make the mistake of thinking audiences want to know more than they do about the characters’ personal lives. The only personal life fleshed out on the show should be Alicia’s IMO.
But that’s the thing, it’s *not* a strictly procedural show, it’s the soap elements (and appealing leads and quirky casting!) that set The Good Wife apart from any other case-of-the-week legal show.
I love Parenthood. Each one of the characters is likeable and intelligent.
I do watch Good Wife, just on demand!
The Good Wife is the best written show on TV bar none, and it has three of the best, most interesting women characters out there. I agree w/ Margaret that Tim Guinee was terrific as was Denis O’Hare, but how is it possible that they couldn’t get Chris Noth to show up for the election ep.?
NOT ONLY was it bizarre that the candidate, Noth, does not show up for the election results episode, but the entire staging of the election night did not ring true including having NO candidate present and his children out in the crowd and not on the podium with their victorious Dad. Also, having the “Good Wife” take a powder after the revelation of the one night stand and abandon her kids and husband after all the build-up to the election did not ring true.
Better and more truthful would have had her stand impassively with Noth as all around her are cheering. Close-up of the “Good Wife” staring into the abyss as the show fades to black.
I love the good wife. Last nights episode should win julianna the Emmy. So many twists and turns that anyone who says its boring hasn’t invested in the show. Parenthood which I gave up early this season but caught the last four is simply amazing.
Three female skewind dramas should not be in the same time slot going after the same audience.
Agree with the posters who have commented on having three shows targeted at very similar audience demos is self-defeating, even though I expect many (as I do) watch the shows on dvr, on demand, etc However, for those who don’t have those options, live viewing forces a tough choice. I am a fan of both WIFE and PARENTHOOD;(only saw a couple of episodes of Body of Proof which is good but not as good, so far) Parenthood is the only one hour ‘must see’ for me on NBC. if CBS cancels The Good Wife, they need their collective heads examined. One of the best written, best acted shows on network tv. I will be as pissed off as I was when they cancelled Judging Amy without any warning. (a show that shares this one’s great blend of family drama & legal procedural)
The Good Wife ratings are down because they keep telling the same story over and over again. Husband cheats on his wife, wife cries and next week will rush into the arms of her boss..Is this 1955 or what??
Jamie Oliver’s show is terrible. Doing worse than Ordinary Family pretty much makes it DOA. With an opening number like that, I doubt it will last it’s full season.
you must be fat
Parenthood has grown on me and now I am completely hooked. NBC, please please please keep it on the air! The show has a very strong fan base!!!
Parenthood is the only show I watch on Tuesdays. It’s superbly acted, well written and offers storylines I can relate to or at least empathize with. I love this family and would be devastated if NBC decides to cancel it!!! RENEW THIS SHOW PLEASE!!!
The Good Wife is the best drama series on network television..CBS would be stupid to cancel a show reaching 10+million viewers a week..even if they are outta the 18-49 demo..
