It seems like the fate of new CBS series Chaos was sealed the day the network announced that the comedic CIA drama it fought so hard to pick up to series last summer was being assigned the Friday 8 PM slot. Chaos quietly premiered last night with a 1.1/4 in adults 18-49 and 6.4 million viewers. Its 18-49 rating was below the averages for Medium and The Defenders in the time period this season. It ties CBS’ season low in the hour with first-run fare, posted by a Defenders episode. At 8 PM, Chaos finished behind ABC’s Shark Tank (1.2/5, flat with last week) and NBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? (1.2/5, down a tenth) in 18-49 and tied with Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares repeat. In total viewers, the CBS dramedy was No. 1 in the hour. CBS’ other Friday series, CSI: NY (1.7/6, 10.3 million) and Blue Bloods (1.7/5, 10.7 million), returned down after a hiatus to make room for CBS’ NCAA coverage. CSI: NY was down 11% in 18-49 vs. its last original, Blue Bloods was down 6%. CBS (1.5/5, 9.1 million) still won the night in viewers and 18-49, edging ABC (1.4/5, 5.3 million) in the demo. Among the newsmagazines, a two-hour 20/20 on ABC (1.5/5) was up a tenth from last week’s hourlong edition, while NBC’s two-hour Dateline (1.3/4) was down 28%.

Great script. Poorly directed pilot. Terrible time slot.
Bring MEDIUM back!!!!
When will the nets learn? For new shows its lather, rinse and repeat. Repeating the pilot on different nights will raise awareness. The nets want to run with the cable shows, but they don’t give new shows a ghost of a chance. Maybe it’s time to send GGC a muffin basket and beg him to bring Medium back to Friday nights to have a lead in for the Friday line-up.
I literally had NO IDEA this was coming out yet…
Wow… I guess that says how CBS really feels about the show. I enjoyed the pilot script.
I watched it and thought it was hilarious. Why do they bury the good stuff? It this had a decent time slot and promotion, it might be a hit. One problem. No females. None, except the one they are sending to Greece. Friends was half and half. Why can’t a series have half the leads female? That might help in the ratings. Just sayin’.
Wait. What? I wanted to see this and had no idea it was on last night. Wish I had known. Great job getting the word out there, CBS.
Why can’t CBS which has so many lead in possibilities give new shows lead ins? Also zero promos.
CBS promoted the show all throughout the NCAA tournament as well during their biggest shows. Maybe you just don’t watch CBS enough.
Yep, don’t watch college hoops or television made for 60 year old women…
How about a couple billboards around town — or, god forbid, a couple plugs in some entertainment magazines, emails?
An appealing lead is what’s going to draw viewers, regardless of gender. And you don’t need to add in females into a show just to have them if you don’t need them. Same with adding males into a female show. As long as the stories are interesting and the characters are fun, who gives a damn?
Too much research impedes simple good sense.
To Ivy’s point, CBS was dumb to launch it on Friday nights at 8. Clearly people aren’t home by that time. You could test on Sunday, Monday or Wednesday nights.
Maybe CBS is out of Promo money. Heard this was a great show and was looking forward to watching it. Had no idea it was even on.
Chaos was unwatchable. It’s premise, in these serious times, is absurd and the execution laughable. Villains are charactures and the glib nature of the mindless banter is even more egregious. Freddy Rodriquez is a talented supporting actor who was clearly uncomforatble in the skin he was asked to wear. This show is dead and it deserves to be in spite of the good intention of those who made it. Never should have gotten out of the gate. The only version of a “comedic CIA drama” that should ever see the light of day is one that is awash in black humor and unexpected twists and turns the way David Russell’s, Three Kings was. This was just a waste of millions of dollars.

Maybe on one of the cable channels, but can you honestly say such a version would work on CBS?? I mean, c’mon!!!
Yeah, these are serious times so maybe a little humor is exactly what’s needed? I want to step away from reality and spend an enjoyable hour watching TV so ‘Chaos’ did that for me. And I didn’t think Freddy Rodrieguz looked uncomfortable – considering the show was created by Tom Spezialy specifically with Rodrieguz in mind.
Must come to the rescue of AC here. This is not about Cable so why make the CBS viewer seem dim? Humor is indeed needed in these serious times, but to try and make a serious world funny without something subversive seems insulting to the intelligence of viewers. I agree, this was a wide miss. If you want funny, let’s make comedy that’s funny. If you want funny let’s not play with the real world unless you truly have something to say about it and Tom Spezialy, a nice writer, is not nearly interested enough in what’s going on in the world to truly be able to reflect it in a meaningful way.
Caught this last night and think it has a lot of potential which it hopefully will get a chance to develop. A diverse, off-beat cast and it finds the right tone between comedy and action.
Maybe they should’ve called it CSI:NCIS:CIA. :/
CBS should have put CSI NY and Blue Bloods on at 8 and 9 just for the Chaos premiere. Blue Bloods could have been the lead in. I liked Chaos, but it needed a strong lead-in.
Hope CBS will move this to another time. This is precisely the type of show that could flourish right now — a dose of the familiar ‘procedural’ but done in a way that’s fresh and funny and smart.
I thought it was really entertaining. But I’m confused. Why did CBS go to such lengths to get the show on the air, only to give it such a god-awful timeslot?
I really, really, really wanted to see this one, too, but Friday at 8pm? That like throwing a banquet for someone and then forgetting to send out the invitations to all of the guests…
Tim Blake Nelson is brilliant.
This show has lot’s of potential.
Please give this a shot.
Let the audience find it.
I will watch AND tape it. It does not seem like this will ever make it to dvd….
I don’t watch College basketball either so the only way i found out about it was thru a review. I wanted it to be better but can see the potential which means it doesn’t have a chance.
The publicity for this show was none existent. I found out about it through “Yahoo’s must watch list” on my homepage the day it was airing.
I watched it with a few friends and we actually enjoyed it very much. We found it to be lighthearted and funny with just the right amount of seriousness. The chemistry between the 4 gents was organic. Freddy Rodriguez is a fantastic actor, he played the ambitious newbie brilliantly. Tim Blake Nelson was hysterical as the laid back human weapon.
CBS may have something special here. They need to change the time slot or think of actually promoting the show. Hope to go on a wild ride with these guys week after week.
Guess they should have gone with ATF/THE LINE.
A title as bad as Terriers.
The lead actor doesn’t have the stage presence to carry the show.
No one to root for; the lead character is a shnook.
The other lead spies were cruel bullies, not lovable rascals.
Yet another exercise in clumsy Fail TV, in which 23 year old writers named “Jason” something-or-another ignore tried & true rules for scripting attractive television stories.
This seems like a Burn Notice if Michael was still an agent.
Burn notice is a much better show. But I still like this.
I had to watch it on the cbs.com site because I had no idea it was airing on Friday. Wonder how many others did the same, and if the ratings will change once the DVR ratings are taken into account.
I really enjoyed the pilot, and look forward to watching next week’s episode. If there is a next week
