Will Ferrell’s debut on The Office (3.9/11 in 18-49, 7.7 million viewers) last night gave a boost to the NBC comedy, which was up 15% from its most recent original March 24 in 18-49. The ratings gains carried over to Parks and Recreation (2.6/7, 5.2 million), up 8% for its best numbers in almost three months; 30 Rock (2.2/6), up 16%; and Outsourced (1.7/5), up 21% from last week, when it had a repeat as lead-in. But things were far less uplifting in the 8 PM hour. Community (1.4/5, 3.5 million) was down 22% in 18-49 from its last original March 24. Then there was the premiere of The Paul Reiser Show (1.1/3, 3.3 million) at 8:30 PM. It was down a whopping 48% from the January debut of Perfect Couples in the time slot to rank as NBC’s lowest-rated in-season comedy series premiere ever.
Fox’s American Idol (6.1/19, 21 million) matched its fast-national rating from last week (the reality juggernaut always goes up in the finals). At 9 PM, Bones (3.7/10, 11.9 million) was up 16% from last week to log its highest 18-49 rating in two months. It as also the second-most-watched program of the night behind Idol. Fox easily won the night in all measures.
Word seems to have gotten out that the CW’s Thursday lineup in back in originals. In the second week back from a very long hiatus, The Vampire Diaries (2.8 million, 1.2/4) was up 4% in total viewers and held steady in the demo. Nikita, which needs a ratings boost to keep its renewal chances alive, got one. It jumped 22% in viewers from last week (2.2 million) and 17% in 18-34 (0.7/2). CBS aired all repeats. ABC’s only original was Wipeout (1.9/6, flat with last week). Below: Will Ferrell and Steve Carell meet on The Office

Reiser’s show was unwatchable. It’s kind of sad he had to come
back and even sadder he had to come back with this. The writing
was embarrasingly awful. How NBC will air the rest of the order (4?) is beyond me.
Curb Your Enthusiasm is the funniest show on television, in my opinion. However, it’s not for everyone. Paul Reiser’s show is on NBC, so it has to be for everyone, or they’ll cancel it. THEREFORE, it can not be Curb.
Reiser was horrible. The people behind it should have watched this episode and taken Larry Davids last line and listened to it over and over and then trashed the ep and started over.
His last line for those who didn’t stick around… He is with Paul and tells him he was worried that what Paul wanted to tell him was that he was gay… and that he liked Larry.
Larry’s last line, “It would have been more interesting.”
So-Very-True. Anything would have been more interesting.
and for the love of god… don’t get glue on my car. don’t get glue on my car. don’t get glue on my car. You’re never gonna guess what happened. Yep. Glued himself to the car.
Primetime Network Television People.
I could barely sit still after the first 5 minutes. I really used to love this show and now wish it would end with Carell’s departure.
I’d rather watch a so-called crappy scripted show over ridiculously unnecessary reality programs.
You are a person of culture and taste.
Don’t ever change.
The promos were terrible. No wonder nobody watched it
Get me the Evigan and Keanan crash cart! Stat!
It’s going to be a long time – a very long time – for me to find another TV show as truly awful as the ‘The Paul Reiser Show.’ This went beyond bad TV and into depressing. The entire thing was executed poorly. It pains me to say that I would prefer to watch ‘Perfect Couples’ over this.
A bad bad bad mistake for NBC.
Why won’t they try Friends With Benefits? I heard it was super funny.
Tv is dead. There is no reason to be watching any of the current shows on tv.
Here’s the main thing about these “fourth wall” sitcoms:
They need to be funny.
Garry Shandling wouldn’t have been able to do TWO of these shows (for two different networks, three if you count the rebroadcasts on FOX) if the material wasn’t funny.
You can’t just appropriate the format, insert a guy who WAS known for BEING funny, and expect instant humor. This is television comedy, not Sanka.
I can’t imagine NBC will be keeping Reiser’s craptastic comedy on the schedule come May sweeps with those horrible numbers (it was in 6th place for its time slot and the lowest rated sitcom ever on the network). Then again, this is NBC, so …
There are a lot of bad shows but there are also some really great shows with incredible writing staffs like The Good Wife, Parenthood, Modern Family, How I Met Your Mother, Episodes, Shameless, White Collar – and that’s all I have time to watch. I’m also really excited for game of thrones on Sunday.
Bad news about Community. It needs to be in a different slot. It feels separated from the rest of the comedy block due to the weakness at 8:30. Speaking of 8:30, I don’t think Reiser was nearly as bad as everyone else. The Office was a home run. Will and Steve worked well together. It was a nice Anchorman reunion. Parks and Recreation was a grand slam. What a sweet and funny episode. As for 30 Rock, it continues to slip. The laughs are few and far between lately.
Okay, I’m the weird one who likes Paul Reiser’s show… But, premiering any show during Idol– that network executive should be sent to Redemption Island and left there…
Will NBC please bring Perfect Couples back. I don’t know where they get the ratings info from but that show is a lot more popular with 30-somethings in the higher spending demographic than I think NBC even knows.
The show was starting to build it’s audience. My wife who works in the financial sector in NYC told me people were watching it and digging it in her rather large office. It’s a total DVR show.
I know people in and out of the industry who were watching it and starting to fall for the characters.
At the very least, NBC should air the remaining episodes.
That show deserved more faith and it should have been the 10:30pm show after 30 Rock since 8:30 is too early for people to laugh at being married and in committed child free relationships.
neilsen. that show never did about a 2.0 in the 18-49 demo. that’s why it was pulled.
All the more reason that Greenblatt just needs to clean house as soon as pilot pick-ups are announced. That the Reiser show got piloted to begin with is ridiculous; that it got ordered to series is ludicrous; that it got on the air is embarrassing. Thank God America saw through this one.
Reiser should have taken the game show gig over the dreck that aired last night.
Last night’s “30 Rock” was really off the mark. I realize it’s slipped of late, but last night was — not good!
I agree, perfect couples I thought had a strong voice and was genuinely funny and relate-able. Community is hilarious, 30 rock is slipping but baldwin steals the show anyway, parks and rec is the best, outsourced…. meh. But paul reiser, haven’t watched it yet but it sounded pretty bad out the gate
30 Rock ‘slipping’ is an understatement…
Longtime fan of the show but wish they’d find something fresh to bring or take their bow.
sloan,
It did have a strong voice. I think it was taking viewers some time to adjust to the voice and humor in it. Everything was heightened reality in it and it felt a bit movie humor to me which I liked.
I know it’s probably dead as disco, but hopefully NBC still is deliberating it’s fate.
Not getting to see if Vance & Amy actually get married has my wife and I ticked.
It’s a good show and better than Reiser’s dreck we watched last night.
Paul Reisers show was pretty bad-downright awful! But I loves his scenes with Larry Davis-I thought David should be on the show with him, no? The game show stuff was like a goofy reality show stunt, and the scenes with his “friends” were some of the most awfully unfunny skits Ive ever seen! If they dont get rid of that by next week, Im done!
The Paul Reiser show was memorable in being so awful. The inside joke with Larry David (do you mind if we steal your show to do a network version of it?) didn’t work and was probably lost on 80% of the NBC crowd anyway. Worse still, was when Paul talks in the end in that emotional Modern Family tone about his real job being a Father, I couldn’t help but think there wasn’t a single scene with you and your kids, yet you tell us all you want to be is a Father? Did anyone @ the studio, network or in the writers’ room notice this? As for 30 Rock, it’s fascinating to me how shows that were once so wonderful can become so awful. West Wing? Entourage? The irony is Tina Fey’s on the cover of about 8 magazines because her book came out all saying how she is the greatest comedienne of her generation. Only problem is, the show’s just not funny anymore. Not even close. Not even close to close.
My wife asked me who Paul Reiser was. I bet most people asked the same thing. Where’s he been all this time, exactly?
Paul Reiser has never ever been funny. The only time I have laughed seeing him is when he was killed in Aliens.
Sad about Community, it needs a new day and timeslot, that show could be a total smash hit.
Watching Paul Reiser now. Not as bad as you trolls are making out, but then again what is. His TV wife reminds me of Cheryl, LOL. It’s a network rip-off of “Curb,” big deal. “You know what you should do?” asks Larry David. “You should do your own version of Curb Your Enthusiasm.” How meta! His pack of friends is very convieniently multi-culti, and love the way they all appear different places en masse. Don’t they have jobs? Love the way the curse words are bleeped. Overall, not great but not horrible.
