Will this further shake CBS’ commitment to scripted programming on Fridays? Last night, a Royal Wedding special at 8 PM (1.7/6, 8.6 million) delivered a rare decisive No. 1 finish in the hour for the network among 18-49 and outranked the network’s scripted entries in the slot this season – Medium, The Defenders and especially Chaos. CBS’ CSI: NY (1.7/5, 9.2 million) was flat, as was Blue Bloods (1.6/5, 9.8 million).
ABC’s Shark Tank (1.2/4) was down 14%. It was followed by a Royal Wedding 20/20, which drew a 1.5/5. NBC’s Friday Night Lights (0.6/2) finished dead last in the 8 PM hour, plummeting 33% from last week. Dateline (1.2/4) was down a tenth.
Fox’s Fringe (1.3/4) was up a tenth from last week, Kitchen Nightmares (1.3/5) was down from two weeks ago. CW’s Smallville was down 20% vs. last week in 18-49 (0.8/3) but up 14% in 18-34 (0.9/3), Supernatural was flat in 18-49 (0.9/3) but up 29% in 18-34 (0.9/3).

Flat? It is almost incomprehensible that CSI NY and BB each drawing close to 10 million viewers on a Friday night is so casually glossed over. Even if you believe in the notion that overall viewers mean “nothing” to networks than you have to look at their 1.7/1.6 demo numbers and see that they are far and away higher than any other show scripted or otherwise on any other network. CBS can certainly choose to replace one or both with a new, and undoubtedly cheaper hour but they will be sacrificing a proven commodity that consistently brings eyeballs on a night where Americans as a whole are not watching TV. If a pilot or reality show can draw 10 Million viewers out of the gate, then every exec should high tail it to Vegas and hit the tables.
And I am sure dominated the 64-100 Demo.
Don’t bash CBS. Check out the other networks ratings for the night. They suck.
