Los Angeles, CA (April 13, 2011) – Two-time Academy Award winner Sally Field will star as Mary Todd Lincoln, wife to the 16th President of the United States, in DreamWorks Studios’ “Lincoln” to be directed by Steven Spielberg. The announcement was made today by Spielberg and Stacey Snider, Co-Chairman and CEO of DreamWorks Studios.
Sally Field joins Daniel Day-Lewis, who has been cast to play Abraham Lincoln in the Spielberg film.
“I’m excited to be working with Sally for the first time,” said Steven Spielberg. “I’ve admired her films and she has always been my first choice to portray all the fragility and complexity that was Mary Todd Lincoln.”
“To have the opportunity to work with Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis and to play one of the most complicated and colorful women in American history is simply as good as it gets,” said Sally Field.
Based on the best-selling book, Team of Rivals, by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, the screenplay has been written by the Pulitzer Prize winner, Tony Award winner, and Academy Award nominated writer Tony Kushner. It will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Steven Spielberg.
It is anticipated that the film will focus on the political collision of Lincoln and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War.
Sally Field is a two-time Academy Award winner as Best Actress in a Leading Role for her roles in “Places in the Heart” and “”Norma Rae.” Field won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama or Comedy Special for her role in “Sybil.” She won her second Emmy for her guest starring role on the long-running drama, “E.R.” Her other film credits include “Steel Magnolias,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Forrest Gump.” Field currently stars in the ABC series “Brothers & Sisters” for which she won an Emmy in 2007.
Doris Kearns Goodwin won her Pulitzer Prize for No Ordinary Time, the story of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and the home front in World War II. Kushner’s prize was for his play Angels in America, which later became an Emmy Award-winning television special. He had previously worked with Spielberg on Munich for which he was nominated for an Oscar in the Adapted Screenplay category.
Filming is expected to begin in the fall of 2011 for release in the fourth quarter of 2012 through Disney’s Touchstone distribution label.

Which means “Brothers & Sisters” is as good as cancelled, because surely she can’t do both.
So glad to see she’s returning to film (this and the Spiderman reboot). It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a real quality movie with Ms. Field in the lead.
Not necessarily. There’s been a lot of chatter that the show could return midseason next year to end its run. If it returns midseason, they could delay filming to accomodate Sally’s film schedule.
Can’t wait to see Spielberg turn the greatest Republican President into a lib Dem.
It shouldn’t be hard, since the greatest Republican president would now be a liberal Democrat. Literally, since a new CNN poll demonstrates that almost half of white Southern Republicans today think the Confederacy should have won the war.
Yes, and of course, we’re to believe a CNN poll about white Southern racists.
Because CNN is so unbiased when it comes to their political bent.
Their political bent that reaches the few hundred thousand viewers left who watch them.
As Jack said in Batman: “Better be sure.”
You might want to check CNN’s global status as well as its web traffic and demographics.
Just for fun, who do YOU go to for unbiased news?
There was a shift between the two parties in the early 20th century. 19th century Republicans were more like modern Democrats (and vice versa). The shift started with the 1896 election, and took full effect with FDR in 1932: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Realigning_election#Realigning_elections_in_United_States_history
Now now, let’s not confuse people with facts.
Newsflash: Lincoln was a RINO.
Sally Field is one of the most brilliant actors ever. She is equally adept at comedy and drama. Here’s hoping for her third Oscar! Happy to see her back in the movies. DDL and SF-acting heaven!! When does this shoot?
Sally Field can do the movie during weekends and when the series is on hiatus and since she is executive producer, she could always take a week or two off. Thier is no official word yet, that Brothers & Sisters is cancelled. Many viewers like to watch it after Desperate Housewives. If they are filming in a Los Angeles studio, she could always film her scenes in the morning and head on over to “Lincoln” in the afternoon and evening.
A movie this scope and with such content would not be done on the weekends and most definitely not principally shot in Los Angeles. Looks like a long, arduous production. B+S is probably done and more unlikely is pushed.
Are you a studio head? You sound like one.
The Grand Old Party was a very different thing back in the 1860s — it was a new and vibrant grouping of intellectuals and yes, liberals. Unlike today’s Republican sell-outs who line their greedy pockets with the campaign dollars of their corporate masters, Lincoln strongly advocated constitutional checks and limitations — call it regulation — on the ruling majority. Nevertheless, the Civil War remains a great stain on this nation — it was a sad and unnecessary war and we would have all been better off with two smaller nations, the USA and the CSA, rather than one giant, ungovernable nation that continues to steal the wealth of its citizens in order to further enrich billionaires and wage war on weaker nations.
Lincoln should have let the South go.
Think what an enlightened and progressive country the U.S. would be today without the South. We would have all been better off. Maybe we would have established a federal union with Canada and we’d all have free health care.
Mary Todd Lincoln was more than 10 yrs older than Abe?
Sally Field will make a great Abe Lincoln. She is a dead ringer
Gidget Goes Presidential
She can act but she is waaaaaaaay too old for the part. Lincoln had pre-teen children during his first term, can anyone honestly imagine Sally Field having kids within the last 10 years? I just checked on IMDB and she’s 64! Marcia Gay Harden looks a lot more like Mary Todd Lincoln did in real life and is much younger-looking. It’s not like Sally Field is some huge box-office draw, this just makes no sense. Yeah yeah, make-up and lighting etc but it’s going to be very hard for her to convince as a woman in her child-bearing years, facelifts be damned. I’m thinking of all the jokes about Sigourney Weaver in Baby Mama, this is a big mistake.
Other than the fact that she’s a great f’ing actress, it makes no sense.
Amen to that! Sally Field seems almost perfect for this role. This cast is shaping up tremendously.
Wow, she’s been rumored for ages, back when Liam Neeson was in the mix. That one really stuck.
I am curious about the age thing, though, seeing how Mary Todd was ten years younger than Lincoln and Daniel Day-Lewis is the age Lincoln was when he died and Field is a decade older than Lincoln. But, I have faith in Spielberg.
Good to see Sally Field is getting some work that’s worthy of her. First season of Brothers & Sisters was pretty good but subsequent seasons became increasingly atrocious to the point my love for Sally couldn’t even make me keep watching it any longer. In fact, the show has been a total embarrassment to her more often than not thanks to the awful “writers” on it.
With regards to Abe Lincoln, Sally has been in the running for the role of Mary for quite a while. Back when Liam Neeson was Spielberg’s pick for Abe.
Sally – if you win an Oscar for this part, please do your “You Really Like Me” speech again – it’s a classic!
I LOVE her. It’s about time she gets a good feature part. I look forward to this film all the more now!
Hollywood is much funnier lately than any of the comedies it’s churning out. Jennifer Garner is set to play Miss Marple and Sally Field closes a deal as Mary Todd Lincoln. What’s next? Judi Dench taking a crack at playing Jon Benet Ramsey?
Good one!
Snore. Sally Field is competent but a bore to watch. Couldn’t they have cast somebody interesting?
Sounds like “Brothers and Sisters” is dead, which is unfortunate. It’d be really nice if they could do a 13 episode wrap-up, but that seems unlikely now, unless there’s a clause in the Lincoln contract that if “B&S” gets picked up, they delay filming or she drops out. Time to add some Bailey’s to my coffee…
You started off with some good facts then jumped to some ludicrous assumption. Read Hinton Helpers The Impending Crisis and find the true reason why Abraham Lincoln decided to pursue a war with the southern united states.
Team of Rivals is an amazing book. And, I look forward to seeing this movie.
Not only another Lincoln, but again with Sally Field????
Seems franchise slum Hollywood has spent just a little too
much time answering to the hidden masters of EUGENICS
(Bill Gates et al, RED China etc.).
It’s now taken the final toll —-utter sterility.
